Andy Hurley Shows Off Vegan Fridge On MTV Cribs

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 11th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Videos.

Andy Hurley recently showed off his home on MTV Cribs and opened his fridge to show the world a plethora of vegan goodies, what he described as, “Everything a real American needs to eat.”

Wow. Vegan and patriotic.

So what does this real American Fall Out Boy eat? Silk soy yogurt, Tofutti Cutie Ice Cream Snacks, Amy’s Frozen meals, Earth Balance Vegan Butter, Health is Wealth Vegan Chicken Nuggets, and Vegenaise were just a few of the items the camera caught.

Other veg stars have opened their kitchen to MTV Cribs, including Russell Simmons.

Watch the video and play a “Where’s Waldo” kind of game to count how many vegan items the camera caught in Andy’s fridge. Then tell us how many you found!

Vegetarian Vampire Rob Pattinson Dating Vegan Natalie Portman?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 9th, 2009 in Actors, Actresses, Couples.

2009 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Graydon Carter - Arrivals

Rumors are circulating that Robert Pattinson is dating vegan Natalie Portman.

Sources say the two met at a pre-Oscars party and have been in touch since.

Could there be a blossoming romance in the making?

Is so, we could almost have a veg on veg couple like the former Hayden Panettiere/Milo Ventimiglia unit.

Rob was “vegetarian vampire” Edward Cullen in Twilight and Nat’s a real life vegan who even tried her hand (or shall we say her foot) at her own vegan shoe company before the economy stomped (haha pun, pun) them out.

Maybe Natalie could do some converting and turn the vegetarian vampire into a real one.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals encourages vegetarians to date non-vegetarians, and president Ingrid Newkirk once said in an interview with green gossip site Ecorazzi, “In fact if they get someone to see how wonderful a vegan diet is, I say, “ Dump him. Move on now! It’s his or her turn to go out and get somebody else over to our side.” When you talk to people one of the strongest reasons they go VEG is because they had a girlfriend or a boyfriend who was VEG.”

Whoa! Watch out Rob, don’t get your heart broken.

But if there’s any truth to the rumor, we bet Natalie’s not interested is breaking Rob’s heart once it’s cleared of potential animal clogging fat.

Nicole Lapin In VegNews 20 Under 30

The Official Teen Choice Awards Pre-Party

The March/April 2009 issue of VegNews features an article titled, “20 Under 30,” about young activists who are the faces of vegetarianism.

Nicole Lapin, CNN news anchor, made the cut!

The 24 year old has a program in which she too recognizes young people who are making a difference in the world, “Young People Who Rock,” which highlights “talented, motivated, don’t-take-no-for-an-answer leaders in politics, business, entertainment, and social activism.”

Nicole’s a vegan, but don’t let that fool you into thinking she’s high maintenance. She once mentioned how easy it is to make meals out of vegan items, and that she could eat anywhere, including a steak house or a gas station.

Congrats to Nicole for making the cut. For the list of other notable young activists, including two awesome bloggers from Supervegan.com, pick up a copy of VegNews.

Chrissie Hynde Banned Meat At Phoenix Concert

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 9th, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Food & Drink.

Show At UK Music Hall Of Fame 2005

We’re starting to think Chrissie does this meat ban on all her concerts.

We recently told you that Chrissie asked Stubb’s barbecue joint in Texas not to serve meat in the outdoor concert area, and instead there was “wheat roast” and veggie tamales available.

Now, we learn that a similar ban was placed on a recent Phoenix, Arizona concert. From the Phoenix Examiner:

“But she’s not exactly dipping one foot in the grave yet and is still the coolest chick ever, from her knee high black boots to her black jacket with tails to her signature long bangs.”

“Maybe it’s because she eats no meat? At the Pretenders’ request, none was sold at the concession stands during the show. But I can forgive that because it was Chrissie’s wish, even though hot dogs are one of my favorite foods. Fortunately I had eaten dinner before going to the theater, and ironically it was just a salad anyway. But I like to be the one who decides when I will or will not eat meat. I guess my only exception to that rule is if the Pretenders tell me otherwise. Or the Pope.”

“Attendants at the concert also handed out copies of “Vegetarian Starter Kit” magazine because “Chrissie wants everyone to have one”. This meant that while waiting for the show to start, everyone was reading about the nobility of chickens. But hey, if becoming a vegetarian means I can look as fit at fifty-seven as the great Ms. Hynde does, I may have to rethink the whole thing.”

A fan of Chrissie’s rethinking the vegetarian thing? Sounds like Chrissie’s marketing plan is working!

“It wasn’t that hard to become vegan for me. The only thing that was a little confusing was recognising animal ingredients that I never knew about before, such as gelatin or casein [milk protein]. Once you get familiar with that it’s simple. No dairy, eggs and those sneaky ingredients were the only differences between vegetarian and vegan.”

—-musician John Feldmann, singer and guitarist for the band, Goldfinger, during an interview.

Ingredients can be a pain in the butt sometimes. We all know that chicken broth doesn’t make rice vegetarian and egg whites don’t make bread vegan, but L-cysteine in your pita pocket? Monoglycerides? Don’t even get us started on sugar-who would’ve thought it gets white via processing with animal bone ash-yuck!

Luckily, there’s a list to help us sort through all that. Bring a copy of it with you at your next grocery store visit.

Anthony Kiedis Hosts American Eagle Outfitters' New American Music Union

Patrick Carney, drummer for the blues-rock band The Black Keys, grew up in the same city and attended the same school as The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde.

The two have collaborated on a fundraiser and he takes people to eat at her Vegiterranean vegan restaurant frequently. He thinks the food is great, but he’s not too keen on the music.

“It’s an awesome restaurant, but it’s surprising how bad the music is that they play there. It’s straight-up new age jazz. As my uncle [saxophonist] Ralph [Carney] would say, “It’s late jazz.”

Well now…Could he be mad that he doesn’t get the hometown discount?

So if you’re not into new age jazz, bring a set a earplugs with you before you go.

Rory Freedman, Jane Velez-Mitchell Dish On Jessica Simpson Weight

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 in Authors, Journalists, TV Hosts.

Farm Sanctuary's 2008 Gala

Rory Freedman, vegan author of the “Skinny Bitch” book series was recently on “Issues” with vegan Jane Velez-Mitchell on HLN where the two were discussing diet and health and tying everything into Jessica Simpson’s publicized weight gain.

Here’s a bit from the show:

VELEZ-MITCHELL: You talk about controversy, Jessica has put herself in the center of controversy over her diet in the past. She appeared in a t-shirt that said real girls eat meat; that provoked a scolding from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals…

Rory, your book is called “Skinny Bitch.” It sold well over a million copies. It`s helped a lot of women lose weight. What advice would you give to Jessica right now?

RORY FREEDMAN, AUTHOR, “SKINNY BITCH: You know, I have to say, I think Jessica is a beautiful girl. I think she has a gorgeous body, curves or no curves. And I feel sorry for her that she`s having to hear about her body. Nobody wants to be scrutinized.

However, if we are talking about a healthy diet, I don`t think Jessica should be giving any diet advice by saying real girls eat meat. Unfortunately meat is definitely not something you want to be eating if you want to be skinny. It`s got lots of fat, saturated fat, cholesterol. People who are vegetarians have lower incidents of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and these are our nation`s top killers…

If we`re all so hung up on our appearances, we can see by the crisis that we`re having, everybody`s overweight. People care about how they look; it`s not making a difference. So you`ve got to get another motivator to help you lose that weight. And unfortunately, how you look is not going to be enough. You`ve got to care about your health.

Read the entire transcript for more on what Rory had to say. The segment is towards the end, so you’ll have to do some scrolling.
