Angelina Jolie Looks Synchill-tillating On Salt Set

Angelina Jolie filming in New York City

Angelina Jolie is looking awfully furry these days.

She wore this fur-lined poncho and matching Russian style winter fur hat while filming on the set of her new spy thriller movie, Salt.

But while this looks like chinchilla, it’s actually a fake, or “synchilla.”

Jolie’s reps confirmed to PETA that Jolie only wears her own skin and that hat and coat are both synthetic.

“The chinchilla is actually synchilla,” PETA blogged.

Hats off (or maybe on, in this case) to Angelina for keeping it faux real!

John Salley Gives Chicago Students Veggie Burgers

22nd Annual Sports Spectacular - Show

Montel Williams’ daughter Wyntergrace isn’t the only one concerned about vegetarian options in school lunches.

Students at Carter Elementary and Williams Preparatory Academy is Chicago, Illinois are getting a taste of Soul Veg Restaurant in the Windy City thanks to basketball legend John Salley.

Salley teamed up with PETA to provide veggie burger giveaways to the schools where he will screen his new ad for PETA.

“Vegetarians have more energy and stamina than meat-eaters, and we’re less likely to become fat and keel over from a heart attack. But being a vegetarian isn’t just good for me, it’s good for the animals.”

According to a press release from PETA, “Studies show that fast-food restaurants are more prevalent in low-income, predominantly African-American communities, where families are more likely to take advantage of these cheap, unhealthy options.”

The two schools Salley is expected to attend are public schools both located in predominately African-American neighborhoods.

Today’s the big day for Carter students and tomorrow Williams’ Prep kids will get their veg burger on.

Kudos to Salley for helping make a difference.

Giles Coren Has Vegetarian Thinking Disorder

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 13th, 2009 in Journalists, Not So Vegetarian.

giles_article_hero
A study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association showed that people with eating disorders were more likely to have tried vegetarianism at one point in their life.

British journalist Giles Coren read this and decided to use the study results to support his rant about vegetarians being “pale, boring, vain and flaky” with the title of his article in the UK Times Online reading, “Do a pig a favour! Ban vegetarianism now!”

Yeah, that’ll do pigs a favor.

“Vegetarianism is a cry for help. A sadly transparent attempt to exercise control over your body, which you feel the need to do for psychological reasons of which you are probably unaware.”

“Don’t mind me,” they say when they come to your house for lunch. “I’ll just have the vegetables.” And you think: “It’s immaterial to me what you put in your mouth, darling, because I can tell from the state of you that you’re going to be in my downstairs bog with your fingers down your throat in half an hour, spraying whatever you’ve pecked at all over the Armitage Shanks.”

“Meat tastes good. It carries vitamins and minerals with a unique efficiency that is critical to the maintenance of a healthy life. And it gives pigs, quite literally, a reason to live.”

If you’re looking for more insults, visit timesonline.co.uk.

Regardless of what the study found, doesn’t Coren realize that people with eating disorders will often try dozens of tactics to lose or keep weight off? It makes sense that a vegetarian diet known for keeping its followers slimmer than their cheeseburger eating peers would be on their list of diet “to dos.”

Coren says, “Vegetarians never love food. They merely tolerate it.”

It’s a safe bet that most vegetarians love food. That’s why it’s so great they can eat more of it, given the fact it’s usually lower in fat and calories. There’s a reason there’s a market for vegan sweets, too. It’s because sometimes apples just don’t cut it for dessert. And there are plenty of vegan gals who can outeat the guys in cheeseless pizza.

Someone call Olivia Wilde and tell her to challenge Giles to a 33 pancake eating contest. Giles will be much too flaky to tolerate it.

Miley Cyrus Saves A Chicken, Gets Some Chocolate

Miley Cyrus Performs On ABCs Good Morning America

Miley Cyrus’ intentions were questioned by TMZ when she was spotted looking for her aunt’s lost dog, but she’s racking up a history of animal rescue that no one will be able to dispute.

Miley shared the spot with some chickens on the set of Hannah Montana: The Movie and at the end of the filming, she decided to give them the Hollywood plush life and took them home.

As pets, not for dinner. According to Foxnews.com:

“Miley picked it up thought it was real cute and decided she needed to save this chicken. So she put it in a cardboard box with some pine straw and got her mom to take it home,” co-star Jason Earles told Tarts.

PETA decided to reward Miley with their Compassionate Citizen Award. The prize? Vegan chocolates.

If this were the award for animal rescue, 50% of the population (cough, cough females) would be signing up for animal rights activism!

Kudos to Miley for rescuing the chickens. Good thing she’s done filming for the movie. We heard the camera adds ten pounds. Now she can freely indulge in her chocolates without worry .

Shanghai Tang And Kevin Bacon Celebrate The October Issue Of Gotham Magazine

Animal lovers across the nation are disappointed that the Obamas have chosen to go with a dog from a kennel versus a shelter due to allergies in the family.

While some feel this is a setback for rescue animals, we’re ecstatic to bring you the news that another shelter dog has indeed been given its earthy wings and will be living high with singer-songwriter Nellie McKay.

McKay performed at VegFest in Denver this past weekend and Susanna Speier, who blogs as the Denver Sustainable City Examiner, had a chance to watch her that evening, where it was revealed Nellie has recently adopted a pit bull.

“In effort to end this on a somewhat brightish not, I shall also inform you that Nellie McKay is now a proud new parent. Although, Denver’s strict pit bull regulations, precluded the golden hearted singer/songwriter from being able to bring him to Denver with her, his newly adapted presence was with her in spirit, throughout the night. And yes, in case you are wondering, Nellie McKay chose to rescue a shelter dog.”

Sweet deal. Karma works in ways you couldn’t imagine. If you’re interested in adding more magic to the shelter pet pot, visit the Humane Society or rescue shelter in your area.

Millionaire Matchmaker Staff Loves Homemade Vegan Cookies

Chelsea Autumn is the right hand woman for Patti Stanger, founder and president of  the Bravo reality TV show Millionaire Matchmaker, where gold-diggers, or uh, women looking for men with over a million dollars in wealth sign up to find love while the sugar daddies get makeovers.

Autmn’s exact title is “V.P. of Match Making,” and she runs all over the place working with and pleasing clients and trying to score a hook up (true love) for everyone.

That kind of fast paced life is enough to make anyone head for the unhealthy ice cream after a day’s work. Luckily, Autumn has a great momma with good taste in healthy baking-vegan baking, that is. And mom shares her vegan cookie love for both Autumn and the staff regularly.

From the Houstonist.com:

“My family is very proud of me. I am very blessed in that way to have a family who will be proud of me no matter what I do. My mom and a few of my sisters have met Patti and love her! Patti loves my mom. We call my mom a wind goddess because she is so earthy and calm. My mom also makes the best vegan cookies in the world called “Carley’s Cookies”. Whenever the MC staff needs something sweet we have my mom make us her infamous cookies.”

Sounds like the perfect match.

Mayor Bloomberg Opens Campaign Offices Across The City

Is Mayor Michael Bloomberg vegetarian? The New York Post is hinting so.

The wealthiest resident in New York city dined at Morton’s Steakhouse in Brooklyn eating “onion soup, broccoli and grilled asparagus.”

Sounds like Bloomberg pulled a Patrick Stump in the steakhouse.

Bloomberg sampled other treats, including the specially prepared for his  crew homemade empañadas, but refrained from eating meat and was “strictly vegetarian.”

If Bloomer is veggie, it would be great for him to come out of the veg closet and let New Yorkers know how awesome it is, even if he flexes.

Now how about putting NY Veg Day on the next city council agenda!

Z100s Jingle Ball 2007 - Show

Avril Lavigne has been known to go and make things complicated when it comes to her status as a vegetarian, but this really takes the vegan cake.

In her hometown of Napanee, Ontario in Canada, at La Pizzeria Pizza and Spaghetti House, there’s a pizza named after her. Avril was a regular there, eating lots of slices of mushroom, olive, and pepperoni pizza. Yes, pepperoni.

And although Avril has associated herself with being vegetarian, she still rides the roni when she visits home, according to pizzeria co-owner Bill Kosmopoulos.

“She still has pepperoni on it,” said Bill, referring to the pizza Avril eats when she stops by occasionally.

This story is sorta reminiscent of vegetarian Alec Baldwin joking around with the New Yorker saying he shot and smoked deer meat and ate it every morning. Only this story sounds true.

“In East Hampton, I’m a nudist and I eat meat,” Baldwin—a vegetarian—had said before my visit, expanding on the idea that he lived a quite different life on Long Island than he did in New York. “I shoot deer with a bow and arrow. I smoke the deer meat and eat it every morning with my eggs and toast. I am a homosexual. I listen to rock music, loud.”

Insert Avril’s name and change a few of the specifics and you get:

“In Napanee, I chow down on the pepperoni and live a quite different life than I do in the states.”
