(500) Days of Summer Los Angeles Premiere

Instyle.com caught up with several actresses at Comic-Con to ask what they would do if they could be superheros.

Emily Deschanel’s superhero vision isn’t that far fetched, as there are already plenty of ladies putting cabbage around their bodies.

“I’d wear a lot of lettuce and turn everything into vegetarian meals. I could turn everybody into vegans and stop all cruelty in general.”

Sounds like the ultimate superfantasy.

What would you do if you played superhero for a day, week, or forever? Allow endangered species to thrive? Veganize all fast food restaurants? Chit chat with your favorite animal friend?

Meatless Mouthful: Emily Deschanel #1 Eco Tip–Go Vegan!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 in Actresses, Meatless Mouthful.

Monte Carlo Television Festival 2009 Day 4

“Go vegan! Or at least eat less meat and dairy. For some reason, the eco movement has been slow and a bit wary to talk about this. But it is pretty much the best thing you could do for the environment.”

—-Bones’ actress Emily Deschanel to ecostiletto.com, when asked what her favorite eco friendly tip was that readers should know about.

According to the creators of Meat the Truth, livestock greenhouse gases account for more emissions than those made by every car, train, boat, and plane we get around in.

Ah, yes. Al Gore it’s time to do your thing. Let’s not let the most inconvenient truth of all get in the way of going totally green.

Emily Deschanel Asks Rep. Waxman To Help Protect Great Apes

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 24th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

Monte Carlo Television Festival 2009 Closing Ceremony

Author Rory Freedman said she admires Emily Deschanel, saying, “Her life is busy, her schedule’s busy but she always, always, always makes time for the animals.”

Emily is keeping up that reputation and has written to California congressman Rep. Henry Waxman urging him to cosponsor the Town-Reichart Great Ape Protection Act, which would phase out “invasive scientific research” on chimpanzees and release federally owned apes to chimpanzee sanctuaries.

The number of apes that would be released to sanctuaries is around 500.

Emily writes, “The Great Ape Protection Act is the best chance we have to ease their pain and suffering.”

“They could form bonds with other chimpanzees, bask in the sunlight, and feel the grass and the earth. That’s the least we can do for chimpanzees, our species’ closest living relatives.”

Screening Of Home At Stella McCartneys Store - Arrivals

The screening of Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s Home went well at Stella McCartney‘s West Hollywood store.

Several eco-stars were there for the event, including Emily Deschanel, who gave the following advice for being greener:

“Reusing is as important as recycling. Don’t forget to bring your own bag when shopping. Keep one in the car. Buy natural products. I’m picking up an amazing belt of Stella’s that I bought. It’s non-leather. The tanning process is terrible for the environment. There are so many things to do…”

Of course we know our gal Emily’s vegan, which does more for the environment than taking all the cars off the road! Wonder why she didn’t bring it up?

Guests were served organic vegan food and sipped on organic Stella wine while watching the film.

If you weren’t on the Stella Home screening invite list (we know, it sucks), you can host a screening in your own home.

From now until June 14th, you can view the entire Home documentary from your computer.

It’s too beautiful for words, so all we can say is go “full screen” mode when watching!

Rory Freedman Talks Birth Of A Skinny Bastard With The Veg Star

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 in Authors, Interviews.

Gretchen Ryans Little Pretty Exhibition OpeningRory Freedman got a PETA package in the mail in college that prompted her to go vegetarian, then vegan. She and co-author Kim Barnouin have already transformed the diets of thousands of women with their popular Skinny Bitch series. Now they’re out to give men a spanking for eating meat, dairy, and too much sugar with their new book, Skinny Bastard.

How did you go about tailoring Skinny Bastard to create a more manly appeal?
The language is written in a way to cater to men more. I’m from New Jersey, so I have a naughty streak in me when it comes to the way I talk. The language is really bawdy and irreverent. There’s a chapter called “No Girls Allowed.” We talk about prostate cancer. We also talk about erectile dysfunction. And how what you eat can affect your performance in bed and it can affect your Johnson. There are a lot of fun euphemisms- a lot of fun to be had.

Some people continue to stereotype vegan or vegetarian men as being wimpy or lacking testosterone. Do you address these issues in Skinny Bastard?
We do address those issues. Basically, we talk about professional athletes who are or have been vegetarian or vegan. And how they’re at the top of their game and they’re high performers. There’s certainly no shortage of manly men who are living a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. We talk about protein and how there’s a myth that you need as much protein as you think you do. How vegetarians get plenty of protein and they can still be strong and manly. And also we address the animal issues and how’s there’s nothing manly about contributing to the slaughter and torture of animals.

Learn what new vegan cheese Rory can’t get enough of after the jump. (more…)
