Meatless Mouthful–Elayne Boosler On Truth In Fur Labeling Law

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, January 6th, 2011 in Comedians, Fur, Meatless Mouthful.

“Congress passes Truth in Fur Labeling Act! From now on, every fur coat will have a label that says, ‘This garment being worn by a shallow, narcissistic, selfish creature.”

–Comedian Elayne Boosler, on the new law that requires garments with smaller amounts of fur on them to declare if the fur is real or fake, something previously required only if the garment was worth more than $150.

A pet lover and animal advocate herself, Boosler has been featured in Animal Wellness magazine, where she said success to her meant, “The end of puppy mills and inhumane practices in the food industry, widespread spaying and neutering and having every person know that each time an animal is bought from a pet store, an animal in the pound dies.”

Johnny Weir‘s book, Welcome To My World, is set for release next week. People Magazine has published an excerpt along with photographs of the Olympic figure skater.

The book represents his official coming out but if gay vegetarian and animal rights activists see the People photo shoot, they might suggest he go back in–at least for a wardrobe change.

Worst Vegetarian News Stories Of 2010

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 31st, 2010 in Animal Issues, Food & Drink, Fur, Not So Vegetarian.

Lady Gaga

We gave you the best vegetarian news stories of 2010. But a lot of anti-veg events made headlines too. Here’s the best of the worst.

10. Johnny Weir ruffles fur feathers during the winter Olympics. It’s bad enough he picks a costume with rabbit fur around the collar. After being criticized, he’s says he’ll “wear fur again” and it’s all just a part of creative expression. Someone hit the ice with his head one time too many while practicing the double-dunce-klutz.

9. Sarah Palin kills caribou on TLC reality show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska.” Someone who feeds her family potentially lead contaminated meat shouldn’t be criticizing Mrs. Obama’s initiatives to make school lunches healthier. In 2008, she gave an interview while Tom turkey got his head chopped off. In 2010, it’s Rudolph. Easter Bunny, dude, watch your back!

8. Angelina Jolie says secret beauty tip is steak. This is coming from an ex-vegan actress who was too lazy to do her research and learn to eat vegan properly, so she failed, went back to meat, and praised it for giving her that sexy “Salt” look. Would love to see what her heart looks like from all the salt in processed meats.

7. KT Tunstall is vegetarian–except for pig’s blood. Sure, some vegans will cheat and eat grandma’s butter cookies at Christmas. But KT Tunstall discussed in detail how scrumptious black pudding, a congealed “treat” made from pig’s blood, was even though she normally eats tofu and beans. “Suddenly we see” Twilight vegetarian vampire taking a whole new meaning.

Obama Signs Truth In Fur Labeling Act

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, December 21st, 2010 in Animal Issues, Fur, Politicians.

Barack Obama

December is proving to be nothing but “lame” on Capitol Hill, especially when it comes to animal welfare laws.

Just days after banning crush videos, President Obama has signed the Truth in Fur Labeling Act (H.R. 2480), which made its final route through Congress in the Senate earlier this month.

The new law closes the loophole in an already existing law that allows real fur to go unlabelled as such if the garment is worth $150 or less.

Canadian Politician Trudeau Fur Card Is No Holiday For Animal Lovers

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 17th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Fur, Politicians.

Trudeau Christmas Card

Trudeau Christmas Card

Liberal MP Justin Trudeau gave animal rights activists the equivalent to a lump of coal in their Christmas stockings when they got news of this holiday card picturing he and his family wrapped in clothing made from coyote fur.

Trudeau said he gladly supports Canadian products and “sustainable fur,” but insists no political statement was meant by what he called a simple Christmas card.

One member of PETA commented, saying, “I think it was disturbing, especially at this time of year in a greeting card. Where is the cheer in wearing the skins of animals?”

You know the story. A rocker and a supermodel get together, fall in love and make beautiful PETA anti-fur ads.

Duff McKagan, who’s played with Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver and Loaded, and wife Susan Holmes McKagan, star of the E! series Married to Rock, got nude to show off their tattoos and send the message that your own skin is more beautiful, creative and interesting to look at than fur. Of course, wearing clothes is okay too, just as long as they didn’t come from another animal forced to live in a cage on a fur farm that’s so cramped and stressful, it starts to chew off its own limbs.

“I think everyone should share responsibility in bringing more awareness that, hey, [fur’s] not necessary, it’s out of fashion, it’s completely immoral to the animals,” says Susan, who is a former fur wearer.

Video interview with the couple can be viewed below.

Norway Bans Fur During Oslo Fashion Week

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, December 13th, 2010 in Fashion, Fur.

Oslo Fashion Week

Norway has become the first country to ban the use of fur during its fashion week in February.

Oslo Fashion Week officials made the decision after numerous protests, including candlelit vigils by Norwegian animal rights group NOAH and collected signatures from those in the industry that refuse to work with fur, including designers, models and photographers.

Last year, the group Network for Animal Freedom uncovered investigations at several of Norway’s 330 fur farms which revealed animals not receiving proper veterinary care, even when those injuries were atrocious, such as loss of limb, tail and ear. This was one year after a similar report by the same animal rights group was released, alleging many of the same violations.

MMA fighter and proskater Jason Ellis shows off his impressive collection of tattoos for PETA2’s “Ink Not Mink,” campaign against fur.

Ellis has discussed animal rights issues with the group before. He once said of the tactics used on animals in the circus to coerce them to perform or behave, “You don’t know what’s going on in the circus. They don’t tell you, like, ‘Hey, man, just so you know, this elephant gets the s*** beaten out of him.”

The tiger definitely looks cuter on Ellis’ arm than jumping through hoops of fire.
