Alicia Silverstone May Add “Butter” To Vegan Life

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 12th, 2010 in Actresses, Film & TV, Food & Drink.

Broadway Opening Of RED - Arrivals And Curtain Call

Alicia Silverstone may be a vegan, but she may add some butter to her life soon.

The actress is rumored to be cast in the film starring Modern Family‘s Ty Burrell featuring a butter carving champion in a small town.

According to Access Hollywood, Production Weekly says Silverstone is currently in negotiation for the comedy that has already cast Jennifer Garner and Ashley Greene.

If Silverstone were competing in a butter carving contest herself, she’d pick her favorite vegan butter, Earth Balance, as she’s blogged about it on her website, The Kind Life.

Available in tubs and traditional butter sticks, Earth Balance comes in several varieties that include soy, no soy, canola oil or without, and contain all the buttery flavor minus the cholesterol and dairy farms.

HBO's Series Treme New Orleans Fundraiser

Clarke Peters, star in the new HBO series set in post Katrina New Orleans, Treme, shares the same taste in food as the network’s president of entertainment, Sue Naegle.

But like Russell Simmons said, Peters insists that The Big Easy isn’t easy at all for someone for follows a strict vegetarian or vegan diet.

“There’s [the West African restaurant] Bennachin,” Peters told North Jersey. “Then there’s [Café] Bamboo, around the corner at the end of Esplanade. Other than that, the only place to eat vegetarian in New Orleans is my house.”

After seeing only a couple of more restaurants other than what Peters named on Yelp.com, it’s clear you need to make a reservation at his house when you book the train or flight to Louisiana.

Treme airs Sundays at 10PM on HBO.

Guy Fieri hosting a grill off at the Food Network NYC Wine and Food Festival New York

Guy Fieri has just finished wrapping up an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives at the Nickel Diner in Los Angeles, California.

The diner is not vegetarian, but does feature some very vegetarian friendly items on its menu.

For breakfast, the “For Animal Lovers” dish contains tofu scramble with spinach, roasted garlic, sweet peppers, beans and optional goat cheese, and the “Vegan Ranchero” consists of fried tofu on a bed of beans, soy cheese, avocado, salsa, with corn tortillasa.

Lunch can satisfy you with the “Grilled Veggie” with vegetables like eggplant, zucchini and carmelized onions with mozzarella on bread or the “Stuffed Avocado” with quinoa salad.

For dinner, why not try the vegan chili with soy cheese and avocado?

All are under $10 and let’s hope they remain on the menu by the time the show broadcasts at 10PM on Monday, October 19.

Fieri himself probably stayed away from those dishes, considering he claims the vegan, macrobiotic meals his parents served him as a child scarred him for life, forcing him to ask in adulthood if bacon could count as a vegetable.

Not in most places, but maybe in the school systems where Jamie Oliver is forced to follow those pesky USDA rules.

Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott Lovers Quarrel?

Tori Spelling revealed 25 Things You Don’t Know About Me to Us Magazine, and several of these secrets lead us to believe Spelling has the potential to be both a great animal activist and vegetarian.

For example, she works with rescue animals and took in cats–even though they make her sneeze!:
“I’m allergic to cats, but I had three of them for years because they’re supercute and I work with rescue animals.”

She wants to open her own animal sanctuary up one day:
“One day, I want to open an animal sanctuary to house all the homeless, unwanted and abandoned animals.”

If we can’t get her off meat completely, she’d likely do well as a pescatarian:
“Could live on sushi and be really happy!”

She’s got that small farmer, grow you own mentality:
“I dream of living on a farm. I want chickens, goats, cows and horses! We want to grow our own veggies and fruits and make our own milk and cheese!”

Vegetarian Star suggests Tori make her own vegan cheese.

NY Sportime (John McEnroe) VS Boston Lobsters (Martina Navratilova)

Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with breast cancer, but her prognosis is positive.

Getting in the bad habit of missing regular breast exams, Navratilova said another missed year could have been costly.

“I went four years between mammograms. I let it slide. Everyone gets busy, but don’t make excuses,” she said.

“I stay in shape and eat right, and it happened to me. Another year and I could have been in big trouble.”

Navratilova has been involved with animal activism and was a complete vegetarian for many years before adding fish to her diet.

Following a vegetarian diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables rich in beta-carotene may increase the chances of survival if a diagnoses of breast cancer is obtained.

When researchers divided Australian women diagnosed with breast cancer into three groups based on the amount of beta-carotene containing fruits and vegetables they consumed, the group with the highest beta-carotene consumption experienced the fewest deaths over six years, while the group with the lowest experienced the most.

One possible explanation for this is that in the digestive tract, beta-carotene is converted to Vitamin A, which is then converted to retinoic acid, which has demonstrated anti-cancer effects on cells.

Broiled black pepper tofu with soy lemon dipping sauce, soba noodles with vegetables and mint, and baked apricots with almond topping for dessert was on Martha’s menu for Thursday, which is described on her website.

“This vegetarian meal tastes exotic but is surprisingly simple. Tofu broiled in a pepper marinade is served with a tangy lemon- and ginger-flecked sauce. Soba noodles with carrots and sugar snap peas are healthful and satisfying.”

Keeping the meal healthy, dessert consists of fresh fruit lightly sprinkled with brown sugar and topped with almonds.

Nicole Richie Organic Food Rules For Household

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 9th, 2010 in Children, Food & Drink.

Nicole Richie Takes Her Ballerina To Class!

Nicole Richie didn’t have a lot of rules growing up as a child, but she wants her household ran differently.

Most of Richie’s rules for daughter Harlow are about keeping her healthy, though.

According to Celebrity Baby Scoop, a friend told Life and Style, “Nicole is obsessed with doing everything she can to try to keep her children healthy and safe.”

One big rule is that the family eat organic.

From Celebrity Baby Scoop:

“The former Simple Life star even grows her own veggies in her garden to prepare salads and stir-fries for vegetarian fiancé, Joel Madden.”

For items she doesn’t grow in her backyard, Richie probably refers to resources like the Top Foods to Buy Organic, before shopping.

Is there any chance of Richie making a rule about eating totally vegetarian in the household?
