Nicole Richie Supports Healthy School Meals Act

Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie is one of the greenest celebrity moms out there, known for being super-strict about buying organic products for the family, eating less meat, and composting. It’s no surprise she’s one of a slew of celebrities backing the Healthy School Meals Act, a bill that would provide regular vegetarian and dairy-free beverage options to more schools.

Richie and her partner, Joel Madden, recently opened a Los Angeles garden for school children and suggests this is yet another way government can give schools the kick they need to churn out healthy, intelligent adults.

“It’s wonderful to teach children about good nutrition and show them how to grow vegetables, but it’s even more important to ensure that they actually have an opportunity to eat these healthier foods on a daily basis.”

Nicole Richie Says “Compost.” Certified Compost Whacko Tells How.

Nicole Richie recommended composting in the list of ways to save the planet in her Earth Day post.

Now, we bring you tips from a self-described “compost whacko,” a woman named Mary Beth Mahoney from Illinois who is Peoria’s first master composter, certified by the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service.

Besides keeping a list of what to and not to compost, Mahoney tells what you should feed the worms if you’re doing vermicompost.

Worms eat like vegetarians, so don’t bother stealing your neighbors’ burgers during their grill out this Memorial Day.

Find another way to make them stop eating meat.

Same for cheese, fish, bones, pasta and bread.

They don’t like their breath to smell either, so hold the onions.

“Worms don’t like onions and citrus, wreaks havoc with their digestive systems,” Mahoney said. “They do better with broccoli, lettuce and other veggies.”

Mahoney keeps her six covered 10 gallon bins of worm in her basement, but she also likes the bokashi compost method which commonly uses microorganisms, molasses, water and wheat bran.

Using these tips, you’ll cut back on your waste in more ways than one, as you’ll be buying less trash bags from the grocery store.

And the kids will like that, as Mahoney’s son said, “I don’t have to take out the garbage as often.”

Nicole Richie shared seven things she does to live green on Twitter.

The organic loving mother of two includes the #6 way to live an eco friendly lifestyle as:

“Eat less meat and eat more local and organic foods.”

Richie also recommends riding a bike for a trip within 2 miles of your home, adding that “1 pound of CO2 pollution is cut for every mile pedaled” and composting your table scraps and avoiding bottled water.

Nicole Richie Organic Food Rules For Household

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 9th, 2010 in Children, Food & Drink.

Nicole Richie Takes Her Ballerina To Class!

Nicole Richie didn’t have a lot of rules growing up as a child, but she wants her household ran differently.

Most of Richie’s rules for daughter Harlow are about keeping her healthy, though.

According to Celebrity Baby Scoop, a friend told Life and Style, “Nicole is obsessed with doing everything she can to try to keep her children healthy and safe.”

One big rule is that the family eat organic.

From Celebrity Baby Scoop:

“The former Simple Life star even grows her own veggies in her garden to prepare salads and stir-fries for vegetarian fiancé, Joel Madden.”

For items she doesn’t grow in her backyard, Richie probably refers to resources like the Top Foods to Buy Organic, before shopping.

Is there any chance of Richie making a rule about eating totally vegetarian in the household?
