Michael Franti On Endangered Animals And Humans

Michael Franti, who mostly follows a vegan diet, is very outspoken on humanitarian and environmental issues, and uses his platform as a well-liked musician to bring about change.

For over a decade, he’s helped organize the Power To The Peaceful Festival, a concert held in San Francisco annually that raises funds for good causes.

He’s also helped collect shoes at his concerts for the charity, Soles4Souls.

Franti interviewed with Global Grind, where he touched on the topics of endangered species, both animals and humans living in poverty.

Barbara Gowdy is no stranger to speaking out for animals. A vegetarian for 30 years and a vegan for 10, Gowdy wrote the award-winning The White Bone novel based on the perspective of an African elephant.

Now, Gowdy is encouraging her readers to follow her lead and take a vegan challenge during Earth Week 2011, which takes place from April 17-23.

“As someone who makes here living as a writer and living in her imagination, I’d like to challenge everybody who lives in his or her imagination to take the Vegan Challenge and become a vegan for just a week,” Gowdy said.

The glowing, pregnant actress discussed her preferences for environmentally conscious clothing. Practicing what she preaches, Silverstone is wearing a dress by designer Gregory Parkinson that features recycled silk, hand-dyed with water soluble coloring.

PETCO Goes Green With Planet PETCO

PETCO has unveiled several items in its Planet PETCO line that offers eco-friendly pet furniture, leashes, toys and grooming supplies.

The Planet PETCO line is part of 1% For The Planet, meaning it pledges to donate 1% of all sales from Planet PETCO products to environmental causes.

This year, the Pasadena Showcase of Design will feature greening the garage space with garage designer to the stars Garage Envy. Ed Begley Jr. is one of Garage Envy’s clients.

Begley Jr. spoke to the Pasadena Showcase of Design, giving his thoughts on how existing, older homes can be made more sustainable.

“The one thing I like about the Pasadena Showcase house is that they’re doing as much repurposing as possible–saving as much timber and brick and stone and tile and everything and not putting it in a landfill,” Begley says in the video.

“Oh, we’re going to put up a new energy efficient home,” Begley says of the builders who aim to go green but may be wasting much in the process. “Ok, that’s good on one end that you have an energy efficient home, but how did you get there? What kind of materials did you waste in the process?”

The Pasadena Showcase House of Design is open from April 17-May 15, 2011.
