Moby’s Teany Cafe Destroyed In Fire

Moby Signs Copies Of His New CD Teany Book And Hotel At Barnes And Noble

Update: Alas, Teany will rise again! See link.

Teany Cafe, a tea and vegan food shop in New York founded by Moby and his then girlfriend Kelly Tisdale, experienced a fire this weekend.

Although no one was hurt, the store was destroyed, and it’s not sure whether or not Kelly will rebuild and reopen.

On his Myspace, Moby blogged:

“I believe that teany the cafe might, alas, be no more.”

“Yesterday there was a fire (no one was hurt, as far as I know), and teany was destroyed.”

“I need to ask kelly if she’s going to re-build it, and as soon as she says ‘yay’ or ‘nay’ I’ll let you know.”

“I’m really glad no one was hurt, and if anyone has pictures of teany post-fire I’d love to see them (as I’m in germany as I write this, and can’t go round to see the damage).”

Teany started off as both a tea and food shop when Kelly and Moby opened it.  Later, Teany became more of a hub for tea when Kelly took over most of the business decisions, although it still had a variety of vegan entrees on the menu.

Moby once remarked that Teany was so great because meat eaters were just as happy with the faux selections as vegetarians.

Z100s Jingle Ball 2008 - Show

After a drawn out discussion and some investigation, we were saddened to learn that Hayley Williams of Paramore isn’t vegetarian after all.

During a conversation with Rob Pattinson, Hayley appeared as if she genuinely loved Gardenburgers.

But one thing Hayley does love is vegan desserts baked by Danielle Konya and her Vegan Treats crew.

On a recent Twitter, Danielle wrote:

“Tonight we baked for Paramore, No Doubt, and Eddie Vedder, fun!!”

The vegan bakery Danielle owns has baked goodies for several celebrities, including AFI and Alkaline Trio, who’s drummer Derek Grant recently wrote a jingle to express his love for Vegan Treats.

You can check out Vegan Treat’s new website, and follow Danielle’s tweeting @vegantreats.

Dennys All Nighter

Denny's All Nighter

All you late night fast food junkies can breathe a sign of relief.

At least there’s one place to visit where you can get some decent vegetarian fare at odd hours in the morning.

A few months ago, we told you, at its own risk, Denny’s restaurant let stars like Good Charlotte twin brothers Benji and Joel Madden into their kitchen to whip up burritos so they could attach a celebrity name to it.

The Denny’s Rock Star Menu #3 is out and features the boys’ creation of a Boca burger burrito with shredded cheese, sliced mushrooms, fire-roasted peppers and onions and spicy mayo. Both are served with tortilla chips and ranch dressing.

This option is available starting next week, but we have some unanswered questions.

Originally, vegetarian and vegan options were suppose to be available. While it’s easy to leave the cheese and mayo off, not every Boca burger is vegan.

Did vegans get ripped off? The only way to find out is to give a holler at the restaurant next week!

Russell Simmons Praises First Ladies, Tila Tequila

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 in Business, Fur.

Parsons Honors Calvin Klein, Inc.s Tom Murry And Francisco Costa

Great minds must think alike!

We recently gave props to Tila Tequila and First Ladies Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy for speaking out against the fur industry and proclaiming their fur-free status!

Now, Russell Simmons has blogged at the Huffington Post, giving praises to the above individuals for the actions.

“Our blogger, Tila Tequilla, trumped all of our other celebrity bloggers by handing in the most viewed and commented blog in the history of Global Grind on the subject of animal abuse.”

“…Michelle Obama and France’s first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy have declared themselves FUR FREE!!! Last week marks a shift in human consciousness.”

“We are finally, after years of going head to head with the fur industry, changing the way the world views fur. It is no longer being viewed as a way to floss and show off your status or bank account – it is now a billboard of cruelty on people’s back.”

Russell Simmons Calls Out Barack Obama On Burger Joint Visits

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, June 13th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink, Politicians, Videos.

Oh yeah, Russell. Tell it like it is!

Barack Obama has been making a habit of visiting burger joints with the public watching. There was the Ray’s Hell Burger outing (yes, burgers are hell for many involved) with vice president Joe Biden. And the Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries visit with NBC journalist Brian Williams.

We called Obama out, and now Russell Simmons is putting in his two cents in a politico.com video.

Russell suggests Obama get something healthier like a falafel.

Watch the video to hear Russell chastise Obama. Our favorite quote? “He’s young,” Russell said, referring to Obama needing to learn to make better choices. LOL! The elders are telling you to each your veggies, Barack.

American Idol Season 8 Finale - Press Room

Jason Mraz likes it raw. And ever since he opened up about his chocolate avocado dessert, he’s never stopped talking to the media about his raw vegan diet.

So it comes as no surprise that Jason’s named his latest tour after a chain of raw foods restaurants in San Fransisco, California, Cafe Gratitude.

Cafe Gratitude, the tour, kicks off in July in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Cafe Gratitude, the menu, offers elixirs, juices, and smoothies, appetizers like raw nachos, and raw soups, salads, pizzas, and veggie burgers.

Kerrang! Awards 2008 - Arrivals

Your mom probably made some good homemade cookies while you were growing up, but did you ever really thank her for it? Like, write her a personal song?

Alkaline Trio is a big fan of Danielle Konya’s Vegan Treat’s Bakery and their drummer, Derek Grant wrote a song expressing his gratitude.

“Vegan treats make me so happy. Eat them any time I feel crappy,” are just a few of the lyrics Derek croons on the song, Vegan Treats. You might want to take a listen yourself and judge if it’s Grammy material.

Danielle has catered not only to Alkaline Trio, but other celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow and AFI.

She gave an interview with altpress.com on the bakery, her famous clientele, and her motivations to be vegan.

What do you think draws musicians to your bakery?
I think maybe because veganism is like a magnet for an alternative lifestyle. I think lots of musicians are eclectic individuals. That’s my take on it. Or maybe, one musician has it and the others go, “We want some!”

How did the jingle from Derek Grant come about?
One of the guys [in Alkaline Trio] called me one night and was like, “We have a present for you.” I was like, “You do?” Then they told me to check my e-mail. They’re just really big supporters and they’re friends. They made a video of them devouring the cakes and stuff. So that’s how the whole thing kind of came about.

What motivated you to become vegan?
I was out to dinner with my family and I saw a lobster. It was a nice restaurant and it had a big, open kitchen; and I saw the lobster in the steamer and it was scratching to get out of the pot. It was the first time I saw an animal suffer tremendously [before it became] a meal. I had ordered some sort of chicken dish, and they set it down in front of me and I was like, “I can’t eat this.” I could never eat meat again

Russell Simmons Trades Vegan Lobster For Pasta At Teatro Goldini

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Children Uniting Nations 4th Annual National Conference

If school officials need to do anything about the curriculum, they should include more nutrition classes!

Specifically, students should spend an entire semester learning what constitutes vegetarian, vegan, and whatever else in between. Because not knowing is just as bad as not picking out the largest continent on the map!

Russell Simmons recently attended a dinner while taking care of business for his Children Uniting Nations (CUN), a nonprofit for at-risk and foster youth in partnership with his Hip Hop Summit Action Network.

When a publicist found out Simmons was vegan, she stated, “Well, he can eat the lobster.”

Uh, heck no, those lobsters don’t grow in the ground!

It’s understandable not to expect non vegs to know how to make nacho cheese with nutritional yeast, but if it moves in a tank and pinches you when you tick it off, how can you not know that’s not vegan?

Simmons eventually got a vegetable pasta entree prepared for him at Teatro Goldini, but he still had to bend his veganism a little to keep from starving.

“I don’t normally eat pasta because it comes from eggs, but sometimes you have to.”

Yeah, especially when the only other vegan option is lobster.
