Pamela Anderson may have been eliminated from Dancing with the Stars, but she has still managed to dance her way into Washington to tangle with lawmakers over using chimpanzees in medical research.

The actress supports the Great Ape Protection Act, H.R. 1326, that would ban experiments on the animals, and she’s written to Rep. Henry Waxman, chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Rep. Frank Pallone, who chairs a health subcommittee, asking for their hands in ending the testing.

Anderson points out that although she is a sufferer of a chronic disease, Hepatitis C, she still feels research on human subjects and other non animal tests would go further in treating and curing such ailments.

“As one of the more than 3 million Americans living with hepatitis C, I am writing to ask that you take steps to end ineffective and cruel research using chimpanzees and direct federal funds to modern, human-based research methods that will be more effective at finding a vaccine and treatment for hepatitis C and other deadly diseases,” writes Anderson. “I implore that you encourage the National Institutes of Health and other agencies to invest in more effective and efficient human cell based technologies that are more likely to yield successful results.”

Actress Emily Deschanel has written a similar letter supporting the bill.

Audrey Kitching has designed a set of shirts, buttons and hoodies for her new movie, Change, and is donating a portion of the proceeds to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Kitching plays both the villain and the superhero in the film which is set to be released soon.

The model and actress who’s constantly Tweeting away about her latest vegan adventure in the kitchen told Peta2, “I love animals, and peta2 is one of my favorite nonprofits, so it just made sense. That in each and every one of us is the ability to be a hero and that people everywhere will join the fight for those who can’t speak for themselves!”

Octomom PETA

The Octomom, Nadya Suleman, will unveil the PETA banner encouraging pet owners to spay and neuter their animals tomorrow at her home in La Habra, California, at 11 AM.

Suleman accepted the offer from the animal rights organization to post the sign in her yard in March, in exchange for $5,000 and a month’s supplies of vegetarian faux meats.

Are any of those children even eating solid foods now?

The message is pretty simple, as the sign reads, “Don’t Let Your Dog or Cat Become an ‘Octomom’: Always Spay and Neuter.”

A spokesperson for PETA told X17Online, “Too many dogs and cats are ‘octomoms’ and while there’s a lot of controversy regarding Ms. Suleman’s decision to use in vitro fertilization, there’s no question that the breeding of cats and dogs is killing cats and dogs.”

Tonight Animal Planet airs a documentary on its investigation into one of the largest pet shops in the United States, Petland.

The company is both a target and defendant of the Humane Society of the United States due to its involvement with puppy mills.

Puppy mills often churn out animals with health and behavioral problems, after housing them in cramped conditions where they are designed to do nothing for humans but breed.

The video above documents an investigation where the White County Sheriff’s Department in Tennessee called the Humane Society to rescue over 200 dogs at a mill in Sparta.

Sea Shepherd has announced its plans to assist with the oil spill cleanup and wildlife rescue in the Gulf Coast.

According to the organziation’s website, Sea Shepherd is working to secure a boat in Europe to bring to the Gulf area. The HAZMAT trained crew will assist in rescue operations on both land and sea, working with BP officials, local fisherman and other government officials.

Captain Paul Watson is calling on other organizations with both manpower and supplies to join their efforts.

“Sea Shepherd and other organizations have ships,” said Watson. “These groups, as well as governments and corporations, have resources. We need to mobilize these resources now. This is going to be a long, dirty, and fatiguing process, but we must act, and we must act now.”

Sea Shepherd is looking for volunteers to assist, as well as donations of detergents, towels, fuel and other supplies.

Sea Shepherd has a history in assisting with oil cleanup and marine rescue, including the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989.

So you love the taste of a well done steak or a ham and cheese sandwich.

You don’t give a flying saucer about animals and their pain and suffering.

Why should you make an effort to eat less meat, especially factory farmed meat?

Well, you don’t really want everyone in the office (not even the co-workers you don’t like) to come down with Swine Flu next year, do you?

Jonathan Safran Foer, author of his book on factory farming, Eating Animals, has interviewed with Vegetarian Times in the May/June 2010 issue where he gives this argument for those who aren’t interested one bit in “animal” welfare and rights.

“We known where the flu came from: it came from factory farms in North Carolina. The link between flu pandemics and animal agriculture is not an opinion. It’s a well documented fact by scientific organizations that have no interest whatsoever in promoting vegetarianism.”

Swine flu, of which cases were seen in humans over the past few years, has traditionally been confined to outbreaks among pigs.

Like other viruses, it sometimes develops an affinity for a different host.

According to Wired, in 1998, scientists found a strain of swine flu in U.S. factory farms that spread quickly, and experts warned then it could one day evolve the ability to infect humans, resulting in a pandemic.

Bob Martin, former executive director of the Pew Commission on Industrial Animal Farm Production and a critic of factory farms, called these environments, “super-incubators for viruses.”

Chrissie Hynde and Welsh singer JP Jones have collaborated to form JP Chrissie & The Fairground Boys and the group is set to give a benefit concert for Woodstock Farm Sanctuary.

According to Ecorazzi,the show will take place Saturday, May 29, 2010 on the Woodstock Farm Sanctuary headquarters in Woodstock, NY and tickets are priced at $20 in advance, $25 day of show, with all proceeds going towards the sanctuary.

Hynde has been consistently vocal about animal issues from zoos to McDonald’s and opened  up a vegan Italian restaurant in her hometown of Akron, Ohio a few years ago that is quite successful.

The Vegiterranean uses Gardein faux meat products in many of its dishes, including the Linguini Carbonara and Spaghettini with vegan meatballs.

Update: The event will be held at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary in Woodstock, NY. The previous version of this post placed the event at Farm Sanctuary, which has locations in Watkins Glen, NY and Orland, CA. Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary and Farm Sanctuary are two separate organizations and not affiliated with one another.

Gene Baur, co-founder of Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY, was recently featured in the 50PlusPrime online news program for Baby Boomers.

50PlusPrime speaks with baby boomers making a difference in their communities as well as directs these 78 million individuals to useful resources.

Twenty four years ago Baur founded what is now the largest animal rescue and refuge in North America.
