Vegetarian race car driver and environmental activist Leilani Munter is headed to Japan to join Ric O’Barry in the fight against the dolphin slaughter in Taiji.

Despite The Cove‘s success in educating the public about the slaughter and the film eventually making its way into Japanese theatres after protests and cancellations, Taiji mayor Kazutaka Sangen has made it quite clear he’s not going to let a few people concerned for animals and the humans who will eventually eat the mercury filled meat get in the way of a bloody tradition.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Sangen said, “We will pass down the history of our ancestors to the next generation, preserve it. We have a strong sense of pride about this. So we are not going to change our plans for the town based on the criticism of foreigners.”

Vegetarian women still cooking steak for their husbands might want to read an interview Carol J. Adams, author of The Sexual Politics of Meat, has with Conducive Chronicle. Not only does Adams give the thumbs down to this practice, as it has women putting aside their own desires for their husband’s, she also makes a connection between men who kill animals and batter women.

“It’s about control, which might get expressed by demanding meat to eat, within that couple and within our culture. But I never claimed, and don’t believe, that eating a hamburger causes one to beat his wife. I do believe that someone who believes he needs to eat hamburger, who has to restore a sense of his manhood by eating male-identified foods, tells us a great deal about our culture’s teachings about men and virility. I know from working with battered women that animals often are injured as part of the control a batterer exercises. And I also believe that if a batterer kills an animal, the woman is in danger and should seek help.”

Art Smith, who’s worked as a chef for Oprah Winfrey and Jeb Bush, married his partner of 10 years, Jesus Salgueiro, on August 18th.

Much talk went on about Chelsea Clinton offering meat to her guests even though she was vegetarian and whether or not the couple should think solely of themselves during the reception. Thankfully, Art and Jesus remembered the vegetarians and offered vegan friendly protein wraps and vegan chocolate cupcakes.

Smith is the founder of the non-profit, Common Threads, which teaches children about other cultures through food. He’s also the owner of the Chicago restaurant TABLE 52, which doesn’t offer the greatest selection of vegetarian options, but sources food from organic farms regionally in the Midwest.

Cat Cora made a stop on Masterchef, another reality TV cooking show hosted by Gordon Ramsay. Cora is known for her healthier, sustainable approaches towards cooking and the chefs’ challenge took them to the local farmers market.

Jamie Oliver was amazed at how many children couldn’t recognize fruits and vegetables when he traveled to a school before filming his Food Revolution series, but even the Masterchefs stumbled over a few of the uncommon items. Still, Joe Bastianach, judge of Masterchef and restaurateur was impressed. He writes at the Huffington Post this must be a sign of America getting more conscious at what goes onto their plates.

“Today we are getting more familiar with the cornucopia that is grown locally in our communities, and becoming acquainted with produce that just a few years ago could only be identified by chefs and farmers. The fact that the contestants got as far as they did tells me that America is really embracing the farm to table movement — getting away from processed and prepared foods, and taking an interest in what goes into their dishes and meals.”

The episode with Cora can be viewed below.

This season’s Apprentice is taking its theme from the current economy, featuring contestants who’ve been affected by the recession either through unemployment, small business setbacks or recent college graduation.

A press release obtained by the Futon Critic reveals a vegetarian and animal rights apprentice may have the chance to run one of Donald Trump’s companies.

“Brandy Kuentzel, 30 (San Francisco, Calif.), received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from UCLA and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Chicago Law School. After working as a corporate attorney for a prestigious international law firm, she co-founded a mobile cupcake business in the San Francisco Bay Area. This entrepreneur is now ready to launch a more challenging and rewarding career. Kuentzel is a vegetarian and an avid supporter of animal rights. She also loves the outdoors and runs several miles a day.”

Here’s cheering for Kuentzel, hoping she’ll bring a Meatless Monday and vegan cupcake Friday into the boardroom at one of The Donald’s empires.

Vegetarians need a symbol. Sure, you might find a circled “V” on food products meaning they’re veggie or vegan, but we need an official law which will denote items as lacto-ovo, vegan and so forth. Being vegetarian means you stand for a lot of things. Essentially, it’s the symbol good health, good food, animal rights and a healthy environment. Speaking of symbols, they’re are some darn hot celebrities associated with them.

Kesha‘s (K$sha) got a symbol in her name. Prince used to be a symbol. Between the two vegetarians, who would you rather…

Jesinta Campbell took the honor of Miss Congeniality at the most recent Miss Universe pageant. Miss Australia may also get along better with animals thanks to Peta reminding her that wearing sheepskin isn’t the nicest thing to do.

“I am confirming that Jesinta Campbell Miss Universe Australia will be wearing only synthetic sheepskin on her national costume,” Deborah Miller, national director of Miss Universe Australia, told PETA Australia.

The animal rights organization reminded Campbell of the painful practice of mulesing, which involves taking chunks of flesh from a lamb’s bottom to prevent flystrike, a condition where maggots eat away at the animal’s flesh. Much worst than any spanking, the Australian RSPCA advocates mulesing only when there are no other alternatives to prevent flystrike. Currently, there exists several other ways to prevent the condition.
