Michelle Obama visited Illinois’ governor Pat Quinn at his home where she received a beautiful gift green in color and health.

Quinn gave Mrs. Obama pictures of his garden at the Springfield mansion, where he is employing children to plant and harvest the green goodies. But don’t call his political opponents for mudslinging material, as this isn’t a child labor violation, but rather part of Mrs. Obama’s push to get children outside and involved with their food. It’s also a great way for Quinn to get his vegetables, as he won’t turn down what the kiddies create.

Alexis Stewart, the vegetarian daughter of household diva Martha, and her co-host Jennifer Koppelman Hutt, recently welcomed Kathy Freston, author of several books on wellness and the same woman who convinced Oprah Winfrey to go vegan for a few weeks.

As expected, Freston was there to enlighten the Whatever ladies’ audience on what a vegan diet is and how following a plant-based diet can eliminate many health issues.

Freston’s transition to veganism didn’t happen overnight. As a girl who “grew up in the South eating chicken fried steak,” she found it easier to go vegetarian first, giving up her old standbys of chicken and steak.

“I gave up eating one animal at a time,” Freston said.

Sounds like a plan. Can you start giving up one animal next month by eating a vegetarian Thanksgiving dinner instead of a bird?

Rachael Ray and her dog Isaboo can be found on the cover of the October 2010 issue of pet magazine Tails Inc.

Inside, Ray discusses her charity, Rachael’s Rescue, which donates money she earns through her dog food line Nutrish, to North Shore Animal League, ASPCA, Bad Rap, and Vet Pets, with the remainder of the money going to smaller organizations dedicated to animal rescue and welfare that doesn’t involve euthanasia.

Ray fell in love with a pit bull, Boo, in her twenties. From there, she vowed only to own the breed so many  people are banning and shying away from.

“I’m committed the rest of my life to having only Pit Bulls. People are so ignorant, and they’ve outlawed them in so many communities and some states, that I just think it’s my mission in life to prove to people that there’s no such thing as an evil animal. There are only evil humans.”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 14th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

Jake Shields may break the rules by being one of the few beginners to get a chance at the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s welterweight title next year. The former Strikeforce Middleweight champion is expected to face off with Martin Kampmann in UFC 121 next week, making it his debut UFC fight. If he wins on October 23rd, he’ll probably face the winner of the Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck battle.

He’s still knocking over his competitors without meat, as he explained to USA Today in an interview.

“I feel really healthy and really clean this way,” Shields said.

“I’m not a preachy kind person, but. … if you watch videos of all those slaughterhouses and the way everything’s raised, to me that’s just gross. It’s not something I want to be a part of.”

Vanilla Ice Recommends Vitamins And Veg Friendly Pill Options

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 14th, 2010 in Male Singers, Nutrition-Health-Fitness.

Vanilla Ice says open wide…and pop a vitamin in your mouth.

When New York Magazine asked him what his secret was to looking so great at 41 (besides masturbating frequently like Ernest Borgnine, of course), Ice replied, “Take your vitamins … I’m a vegetarian. I don’t know. Genes.”

Ice forgot to add to invest in a quality vitamin suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Most know the gelatinous capsule takes many supplements off the list, but you have to remember there are some vitamins themselves, like D, which can be derived from animals.

It’s been said it’s ultimately the parent’s job to educate children and if school cafeterias won’t stop serving junk for food, you’re going to have to submit your vegetarian recipes to teach them to cook something else!

The USDA has partnered with Michelle Obama‘s “Let’s Move!” campaign in a contest that seeks the best recipes for plant based meals to be included in school lunch menus around the country. Participants are asked to form teams and develop recipes in the following categories: Whole Grains, Dark Green and Orange vegetables, or Dry Beans and Peas.
