Quantcast Vegetarian StarJake Shields Makes UFC Debut With Mean Meatless Attitude

Jake Shields may break the rules by being one of the few beginners to get a chance at the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s welterweight title next year. The former Strikeforce Middleweight champion is expected to face off with Martin Kampmann in UFC 121 next week, making it his debut UFC fight. If he wins on October 23rd, he’ll probably face the winner of the Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck battle.

He’s still knocking over his competitors without meat, as he explained to USA Today in an interview.

“I feel really healthy and really clean this way,” Shields said.

“I’m not a preachy kind person, but. … if you watch videos of all those slaughterhouses and the way everything’s raised, to me that’s just gross. It’s not something I want to be a part of.”

“Like I said, I don’t try to preach to others the way I live. For me, it doesn’t seem right, so I just choose to be a vegetarian.”

Shields grew up in a vegetarian household and has never eaten a piece of meat in his life.

Highly confident of his abilities, Shields considers himself a specialist who no one has been able to train well enough to replace.

“People know what I’m trying to do, but I do it at a higher level than anyone else. … I’m so good at it, I force my way on them. But also, when you do the same thing over and over, people know what you’re going to do and try to put game plans together. But luckily, so far people haven’t been stopping it.”

Guess other fighters haven’t realized the secret to Shield’s unstoppable game lies in the tempeh and not the turkey.
