John Salley Makes Vegetarian Pizzas

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 4th, 2010 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink, Recipes.

Premiere Of HBO's Magic & Bird: A Courtship Of Rivals - Arrivals

John Salley opened up his kitchen to the cameras while he demonstrated making vegetarian pizzas.

Either “The Tash” or “Da Bomb” pizzas can be complemented with Salley’s “Perfect Heirloom Salad.”

Salley mentions that children aren’t watching enough vegetable friendly programming on television.

“You’ve got all these kids that won’t eat vegetables. Those kids whose parents didn’t like vegetables and let their kids watch these TV shows that shows kids not liking vegetables. So then kids imitate the atmosphere. That’s why you’ve got to make sure you know what you’re kids are watching, so it enhances what you teach them.”

Sounds like Salley is giving a hint that every parent and child should watch (and imitate) his cooking videos (and even buy his brand of food products in the future).

It’s definitely for their best interest, as pizza made with meatless ground, vegan cheese, plus lots of nutrient rich vegetables like onions, peppers and spinach goes a long way towards making a child a healthy adult.

Teach the children right, grab the recipe for the pizzas and salads and watch the video of Salley.

Carol Leifer Misses Cheese, Saves Money On Clothing

Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences Presents "From Stand-Up To Sitcom"

Carol Leifer is set to make an appearance at the Tuscon Festival of Books on March 14 to discuss her latest book, When You Lie About Your Age, The Terrorists Win.

During a recent interview with the Arizona Daily Star, Carol admitted there were a few drawbacks to her decision to go vegan.

“I think the thing I miss the most is cheese,” she said but added that “you can really work around anything.”

On the other hand, she’s being frugal by not purchasing pricier items made from animal products.

“I’m saving so much money because I don’t buy wool any more, and I don’t buy leather.”

Which probably explains why she’ll only splurge on a pair of Stella McCartney shoes every once in awhile.

“Stella McCartney is my new savior. It’s pricey, so I buy it sparingly. It’s really good stuff.”

Mitt Romney Michael Bloomberg–Who Would You

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010 in Politicians, Who Would You.

Never met a politician that didn’t like a seitan sandwich, or at least didn’t pretend to like one while campaigning in the raw foods and sustainable cotton clothing district of city X.

Two seemingly non vegetarian politicians have been caught in the public looking suspciously interested in at least practicing Meat Free Mondays.

Months ago, it was NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg voting “nay” on the steak while recently Mitt Romney struck at a pose at the mostly vegetarian Great American Health Bar.

It’s about giving the people what they want, and the American people are calling for an overhaul in the system that allows them to access healthy food.

Between Romney and Bloomberg, who would you rather have veggie burger lunch with to discuss how to make organic produce cheaper.

John Joseph, punk rock singer best known for his work with the Cro-Mags, is training for a triathlon in his late 40s.

If you’re wondering how this is physically possible, you might ask him about his diet, which is mostly raw and filled with plant based proteins.

Then again, it may those supplements he’s creating with a internationally known nutritionist, Dr. Fred Biscie.

All this is accomplished while John has worked on a new book about how the wrong diet and lifestyle choices will eventually make you a “pussy.”

The vegetarian of 30 years said of the upcoming book, Meat Is For Pussies:

“The new book’s title is a play on words. Everyone thinks that I’m calling you a pussy if you eat meat. That’s not what the title is suggesting. What I say in the foreword is that if you continue to leading a sedentary lifestyle, sitting in front of the TV, getting no exercise, eating poisonous foods, you will become a pussy that is dependent on the pharmaceutical companies. If that’s what you want, right on, don’t buy my book. If you want to know what’s really going on, then I suggest you pick it up.”

Fair enough.

John says about half of his diet is raw and he’s not a fan of GMOs.

“Biggest Loser” Shay Sorrells On Vegetarian Friendly Budget Advice

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010 in Food & Drink, Reality TV.

Shay Sorrells

Shay Sorrells

Shay Sorrells lost 170 pounds during her stint on NBC’s The Biggest Loser.

The National Association of Social Workers member isn’t finished with her goals yet, and Subway is giving her $1,000 for each pound she loses by the end of Season 9.

Working with people with limited income helped Sorrells create ways to ensure these families stayed nourished while stretching the dollar and she’s provided some advice on how to eat healthy for those in similar situations.

Vegetarian Star is happy to report that Sorrells recommends plenty of ways anyone can incorporate vegetarian friendly practices into their budget.

Like growing your own produce:
“Depending on your location (and family situation), if you are in a rural area or at least dirt is accessible think community garden, back patio garden, or even windowsill garden! It is really cheap to grow your own veggies, spices, and herbs and it’s a great learning experience for the whole family.”

And using substitutes for dairy products:
“Sometimes it can just come down to preparation. Ingredients such as almond milk are superb for you and much cheaper. Using less butter or less oils to cook is a better option. White break and wheat bread usually cost the same. Buy wheat bread and brown rice instead of white bread or rice.”

Don’t forget to forget the fast food joint and opt for cheaper, non animal proteins instead:
“Educate clients on how a $3 dollar McDonalds Happy Meal can actually stretch if you spend that amount on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for several meals.”
