Radha Mitchell: Gun Loving Vegetarian On “Surrogates”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, September 21st, 2009 in Actresses, Film & TV.

Radha Mitchell attends Toronto International Film Festival

Radha Mitchell loves her guns.

She told superherohype.com, “I want a character who is gun-toting. I never get to do it and whenever it’s there I just have this desire to have guns.”

Surprised by her response, the interviewer reminded her that she’s a vegetarian.

“Yeah. (laughs) I just like the precision. I just like the style of it, really. It’s so kind of iconic. I guess that’s why it’s interesting.”

Hey, no one said Radha liked using guns to hunt.

Radha’s latest film Surrogates, based on a comic book series involving humans communicating with each other through robots or “surrogates,” is set to be released September 25.

“Bored To Death” With Jason Schwartzman: Episode 2 Preview

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, September 21st, 2009 in Actors, Film & TV, Videos.

Bored To Death premiered last night on HBO starring vegan Jason Schwartzman, who plays a pot smoking, drinking guy who ruminates too much about the sad parts of his life.

Schwartzman co-wrote Bored To Death, which is probably why there are so many vegan references in the television series.

Schwartzman’s character, Jonathan Ames, calls himself a non-practicing vegan and hooks up with a “radical vegan” helicopter mom (Parker Posey) in one episode, who sends him on a mission to recover her son’s skateboard from a group of bad street kids.

Here’s a clip from episode 2 of Bored To Death above.

Sophia Loren: The Fur Wearing Anti-Brigitte Bardot?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, September 21st, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Fur.

81st Academy Awards, 2009

The end of September marks birthdays for two big sex symbol icons of the 60s, Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot.

Both woman turn 75 this month and were known for their screen goddess film looks in their youth, but from an animal rights point of view, they’re polar opposites.

After retiring from movies around the age of 40, vegetarian Bardot devoted her life to animal activism, calling it “the most wonderful success” of her life.

And when Loren posed in a fur ad for an Italian designer in the 90s, Bardot wrote to her saying, “Wearing a fur is wearing a cemetery on your back.”

In Defense of Animals posted this formula for the number of animals it takes to make  fur coat.

“To make one fur coat you must kill at least fifty-five wild mink, thirty-five ranched mink, forty sables, eleven lynx, eighteen red foxes, eleven silver foxes, one hundred chinchillas, thirty rex rabbits, nine beavers, thirty muskrats, fifteen bobcats, twenty-five skunks, fourteen otters, one hundred twenty-five ermines, thirty possums, one hundred squirrels, or twenty-seven raccoons.”

That’s quite a pet cemetery.

Donny Moss, director for the controversial insider film on what happens in the horse-drawn carriage industry, Blinders, was sadly able to utilize his filming skills recently to capture a wreck that occurred in NYC last week.

A taxi crashed into the carriage, throwing the carriage driver into the street.

The horse ran, but is presumed to be okay.

Take a look for yourself and decide: Is it time to overhaul this tradition?

Do you already have your favorite contestant in mind?

There are so many favorites to choose from, like Mya, who went vegetarian to get in shape and lost 11 pounds for the competition.

There’s also Kelly Osbourne, who, although rumored to be a flip flop vegetarian, attended the launch of Paul McCartney‘s Meat-Free Monday campaign to get people to reduce their meat intake.

Then there’s Joanna Krupa, who posed in this popular anti-fur ad.

Last year, a spoof PETA ad was recorded by the DWTS contestants, where some “facts” about the cruelties of the dancing industry were revealed.

Michelle Obama Visits New Farmers Market In Washington DC

The White House Farmer’s Market opened this weekend and drew a good crowd, even during the rain and cold, according to grist.com.

First Lady Michelle Obama made an appearance and was happy the turnout was so good.

“I’ve never seen so many people so excited about fruits and vegetables!” Michelle said.

Wonder if anyone asked her to sign a carrot?

“A farmer’s market is not just about vegetables, it’s about community,” Michelle added.

The First Lady was the first customer and chose produce from The Farm at Sunnyside, an organic producer from Rappahannock, Virginia.

No mention of Mr. Obama attending the Farmer’s Market.

Maybe he was out for another burger run.

The Farmer’s Market will run until October 29.
