Bluewater Comic Gals Bare All In Anti-Fur Ad

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 9th, 2009 in Fur, Misc Artists and Performers, Pop Culture.

petaadfinal1

Is PETA running out of famous ladies to take their clothes off? Now, comic book characters are being recruited.

A geek’s dream come true, the women of Bluewater Comics have volunteered to bare all against the fur industry.

You might be familiar with Bluewater comics for their sequels to some of Hollywood mythology like The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Clash of the Titans, and Jason and the Argonauts or their monthly 10th Muse books.

Characters featured here are Emma Sonnet from 10th Muse, Diana Moore of JudoGirl, Scarlet of VSS: Nemesis Rising, and Isis from the Legend of Isis.

Oh, if only mom knew the comics her son read in this day and age. And she was only worried about dirty magazines under the bed.

“Stolen for Fashion”—Learn More at PETA.org.
It’s almost blasphemous to say it’s a “cute” ad, because obviously there’s nothing cute about killing an animal for its pelt.

But in this new cute PETA ad starring Ricky Gervais and singer Pink, at least the animals lived through it to fight back.

Gervais plays the rabbit who snatches his fur coat back from a man, and Pink the alligator who claims a purse a woman is holding made from her skin. No word if she gave the cash back inside it or not.

Pink is already a vegetarian and Ricky has been toying with the idea of it, feeling uncomfortable eating meat that still looks like an animal. What do you think? Is this video a step towards Ricky living the vida vega?

Tom DeLonge, Mr. Macbeth Shoes, Speaks To Sneaker Freaker

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 9th, 2009 in Business, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

2008 Voodoo Experience - Day 1

Tom DeLonge is known for being the guitarist and vocalist for the musical group Blink-182, as well as Angels & Airwaves. He’s also the brains behind Macbeth Footwear, with all its vegan shoe brands designed for celebrities such as Tegan and Sara and Frank Iero.

He spoke to Sneaker Freaker about Macbeth shoes:

Where does the brand name derive from? Are you a literature buff?
The theme of Macbeth, the Shakespearean play, tells of a basic truth, in that riches gained through unethical methods are less than worthless and we try to ingrain that in our company ethos. It is an amazing play and if anyone has not read it, we highly recommend you do. That theme and name are timeless and we want our company to be timeless too, so the name just stuck.

You’ve been quoted as saying ‘Macbeth is about challenging yourself to find that which inspires you to be better, do better and to live with greater meaning’. How can a humble sneaker do all of that?
Through its charitable works and vegan program, we feel Macbeth challenges people to be a better person and establish a greater meaning in their life. When someone purchases a certain pair of shoes, because a portion of the proceeds go to a charity they believe in or because they are animal cruelty free, that person is doing their little part in a greater goal for the betterment of society.

Is that why you went vegan-friendly as well?
When Macbeth first started, we were working with and taking inspiration from the growing hardcore scene. Bands like Bane, Alkaline Trio, American Nightmare, H20, and Sick of it All, all supported Macbeth and asked for vegan-friendly shoes. From there the vegan program expanded into what it is today, still working with several bands like AFI and Circa Survive that live by vegan ideals.

Erykah Badu’s Ex Nutritionist, Afya Ibomu, Pimps Out Tofu

If you want to know how Erykah Badu got her vegan self on track to the best health, look no further than the cookbook written by her ex nutritionist, Afya Ibomu.

Afya worked with Badu in 2003, and now the lovely lady is a celebrity herself, with her recently published cookbook, The Vegan Soulfood Guide to the Galaxy.

It’s filled with all things soul food-sweet potato pie, buffalo wings, corn bread, collard greens, hearty cookies-veganized.

Afya’s mom switched her to a vegan diet as a child after she had so many illness like asthma and irritable bowel syndrome that weren’t responding to traditional medicines. An allergist suggested Afya’s diet might be contributing to her ailments, and the KRS-One song, “Beef,” also played a role in mom putting her foot down and saying, “No more meat Afya.”

Afya  is the CEO of her holistic lifestyle company, Nattral Unlimited, LLC at www.NATTRAL.com. She lives with her husband, stic.man of the Dead Prez hip hop group, with their son, Itwela.

Girlie Girl and her army has one of Afya’s recipes, buffalo tofu wings, posted on her blog.

You can order a copy of the Vegan Soulfood Guide, which comes with a free DVD, “Pimp My Tofu,” at www.NATTRAL.com.

Vegetarian Vampire Rob Pattinson Dating Vegan Natalie Portman?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 9th, 2009 in Actors, Actresses, Couples.

2009 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Graydon Carter - Arrivals

Rumors are circulating that Robert Pattinson is dating vegan Natalie Portman.

Sources say the two met at a pre-Oscars party and have been in touch since.

Could there be a blossoming romance in the making?

Is so, we could almost have a veg on veg couple like the former Hayden Panettiere/Milo Ventimiglia unit.

Rob was “vegetarian vampire” Edward Cullen in Twilight and Nat’s a real life vegan who even tried her hand (or shall we say her foot) at her own vegan shoe company before the economy stomped (haha pun, pun) them out.

Maybe Natalie could do some converting and turn the vegetarian vampire into a real one.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals encourages vegetarians to date non-vegetarians, and president Ingrid Newkirk once said in an interview with green gossip site Ecorazzi, “In fact if they get someone to see how wonderful a vegan diet is, I say, “ Dump him. Move on now! It’s his or her turn to go out and get somebody else over to our side.” When you talk to people one of the strongest reasons they go VEG is because they had a girlfriend or a boyfriend who was VEG.”

Whoa! Watch out Rob, don’t get your heart broken.

But if there’s any truth to the rumor, we bet Natalie’s not interested is breaking Rob’s heart once it’s cleared of potential animal clogging fat.

51st Annual Grammy Awards - Press Room

Paul McCartney is giving the thumbs up to the Vegetarian Society for using his late wife Linda’s recipes in its new cooking classes.

“It’s fabulous to see a course inspired by Linda and her recipes, which will in turn, hopefully, inspire cooks of the future,” McCartney said. “Those of us in her family are very proud that the Vegetarian Society has chosen to honour Linda in this way.”

The Cordon Vert School is located in the headquarters of the Vegetarian Society in London.

The curriculum will be officially launched later this month, and the actual courses will be offered in May, August, and October.

Linda McCartney was a longtime vegetarian and activist who inspired Paul to become one. She published vegetarian cookbooks and started her own line of frozen vegetarian foods, which was recently revamped with help from the McCartney family.

The Official Teen Choice Awards Pre-Party

The March/April 2009 issue of VegNews features an article titled, “20 Under 30,” about young activists who are the faces of vegetarianism.

Nicole Lapin, CNN news anchor, made the cut!

The 24 year old has a program in which she too recognizes young people who are making a difference in the world, “Young People Who Rock,” which highlights “talented, motivated, don’t-take-no-for-an-answer leaders in politics, business, entertainment, and social activism.”

Nicole’s a vegan, but don’t let that fool you into thinking she’s high maintenance. She once mentioned how easy it is to make meals out of vegan items, and that she could eat anywhere, including a steak house or a gas station.

Congrats to Nicole for making the cut. For the list of other notable young activists, including two awesome bloggers from Supervegan.com, pick up a copy of VegNews.

Chrissie Hynde Banned Meat At Phoenix Concert

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 9th, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Food & Drink.

Show At UK Music Hall Of Fame 2005

We’re starting to think Chrissie does this meat ban on all her concerts.

We recently told you that Chrissie asked Stubb’s barbecue joint in Texas not to serve meat in the outdoor concert area, and instead there was “wheat roast” and veggie tamales available.

Now, we learn that a similar ban was placed on a recent Phoenix, Arizona concert. From the Phoenix Examiner:

“But she’s not exactly dipping one foot in the grave yet and is still the coolest chick ever, from her knee high black boots to her black jacket with tails to her signature long bangs.”

“Maybe it’s because she eats no meat? At the Pretenders’ request, none was sold at the concession stands during the show. But I can forgive that because it was Chrissie’s wish, even though hot dogs are one of my favorite foods. Fortunately I had eaten dinner before going to the theater, and ironically it was just a salad anyway. But I like to be the one who decides when I will or will not eat meat. I guess my only exception to that rule is if the Pretenders tell me otherwise. Or the Pope.”

“Attendants at the concert also handed out copies of “Vegetarian Starter Kit” magazine because “Chrissie wants everyone to have one”. This meant that while waiting for the show to start, everyone was reading about the nobility of chickens. But hey, if becoming a vegetarian means I can look as fit at fifty-seven as the great Ms. Hynde does, I may have to rethink the whole thing.”

A fan of Chrissie’s rethinking the vegetarian thing? Sounds like Chrissie’s marketing plan is working!
