Rory Freedman, Jane Velez-Mitchell Dish On Jessica Simpson Weight

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 in Authors, Journalists, TV Hosts.

Farm Sanctuary's 2008 Gala

Rory Freedman, vegan author of the “Skinny Bitch” book series was recently on “Issues” with vegan Jane Velez-Mitchell on HLN where the two were discussing diet and health and tying everything into Jessica Simpson’s publicized weight gain.

Here’s a bit from the show:

VELEZ-MITCHELL: You talk about controversy, Jessica has put herself in the center of controversy over her diet in the past. She appeared in a t-shirt that said real girls eat meat; that provoked a scolding from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals…

Rory, your book is called “Skinny Bitch.” It sold well over a million copies. It`s helped a lot of women lose weight. What advice would you give to Jessica right now?

RORY FREEDMAN, AUTHOR, “SKINNY BITCH: You know, I have to say, I think Jessica is a beautiful girl. I think she has a gorgeous body, curves or no curves. And I feel sorry for her that she`s having to hear about her body. Nobody wants to be scrutinized.

However, if we are talking about a healthy diet, I don`t think Jessica should be giving any diet advice by saying real girls eat meat. Unfortunately meat is definitely not something you want to be eating if you want to be skinny. It`s got lots of fat, saturated fat, cholesterol. People who are vegetarians have lower incidents of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and these are our nation`s top killers…

If we`re all so hung up on our appearances, we can see by the crisis that we`re having, everybody`s overweight. People care about how they look; it`s not making a difference. So you`ve got to get another motivator to help you lose that weight. And unfortunately, how you look is not going to be enough. You`ve got to care about your health.

Chrissie Hynde Stubbed Meat Eaters’ Hopes At Stubb’s

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Food & Drink.

UK Film Premiere: Ano Una - Arrivals

Uh-uh. No real meat’s getting in my concert area

When we told you Chrissie Hynde performed in the outdoor area of a barbecue joint in Texas, we mentioned there were vegetarian tamales for sale.

Now, we are finding out a little more about the food situation. Apparently, the restaurant managers respected Chrissie’s wishes and only served roasted “wheat” sandwiches (sounds like seitan) and vegetarian tamales outside where the concert took place.

Awesome that Chrissie was able to spread the news both by word of mouth and what people put in their mouth. Of course, not everyone was happy.

“You know, I don’t know,” said one concert goer named Debbie, when asked what a wheat roast sandwich was. “I’m grateful that it was dark enough that I didn’t have to inspect it too carefully. It tasted so bad. In fact, I thought today (Monday) I’d get on the Internet and see what the hell I put in my mouth last night (Sunday night).”

Some might tell Debbie that any meat she eats should probably be inspected a heck of a lot more than any wheat sandwich, considering the hormones pumped into animals, the sickly condition of some animals that are still slaughtered, and the number of e.coli cases occurring every year from tainted product.

“We told the people that if they prefer to have barbecue they had a full line of barbecue in the restaurant, if that’s why they so chose,” said Ryan Garrett, Stubb’s venue manager. “We love the Pretenders and we want to have them back. We can’t have a negative spin on this.”

“We just respected her because we want her to come back, and at the same time offered our patrons barbecue items in bulk in our restaurant,” he added.

rickscabaretuk72Rick’s Cabaret NYC means business.

The only publicly traded chain of strip joints on NASDAQ (under the symbol RICK, if you’re interested in adding more stock to your rather bare (hahaha) portfolio) is getting down to business about animal fur.

It’s handpicked seven lovely ladies to star in a PETA anti-fur ad, who’d rather go topless than wear fur.

It’s probably a safe bet that most men would rather see them topless than wearing fur.

So gentlemen, the next time you need an excuse to go one of Rick’s strip joints, just tell the lady you believe in supporting humane entertainment companies who employ women who agree that fur is cruel and archaic.

Tell her you are taking a stand against an industry where much of the product is imported from countries with no animal welfare laws, and the animals are subjected to painful practices to obtain their pelts, such as being skinned alive.

It’s not about guys night out. It’s about taking a moral stance.

Jeremy Piven Hasn’t Learned, Still Studying With School Of Fishes

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 in Actors, Not So Vegetarian.

15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals

The self proclaimed “fish eating vegetarian” Jeremy Piven claims he had to withdraw from the production of a play, Speed-The-Plow, because he developed mercury poisoning.

However, it doesn’t appear as if he’s learned his lesson, as he’s still chowing down on Charlie Tuna and his little mermaid brothel.

He was recently spotted eating calamari salad and tuna tartare surrounded by the ladies, including Michael Phelps’ ex, Marina Katz, at the Mondrian Hotel’s Sunset Lounge.

“After recovering from mercury poisoning, a patient should be avoiding foods that are known to be contaminated with mercury, such as tuna, for at least three months,” Dr. Grace Keenan told OK!.

After recovering from mercury poisoning, you’d think a patient would be terrified to touch any tuna for more than three months. Sigh…

Vegan Jane Velez-Mitchell Has Issues

You bet she has issues. Like how to handle all the sudden fame and popularity!

Jane Velez-Mitchell, the vegan anchor who replaced Glenn Beck on CNN news spinoff HLN, is burning up the ratings chart.

During it’s third month on air, Jane’s “Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell” pulled in HLN’s largest 7PM audience since it launched in February 2005.

And in January 2009, “Issues” averaged 531,000 total viewers and 221,000 adults 25-54, a 50% increase in total viewers and a 46% increase in the demo over her predecessor’s January 2008 ratings.

If you remember us telling you, Jane has used her TV spotlight to highlight tons of animal issues, from puppy mills and adoption to spaying and neutering to California’s Proposition 2.

And if her popularity is rising, that can only mean a bigger chance for her to get these “issues” to the public so they’ll be more informed.

Congrats to Jane. Let us know when the vegan foods segment is airing. We’ll be Tivo-ing it, for sure!

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Feels Guilty For Not Being Vegetarian

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 in Actresses, Not So Vegetarian.

julialouisdreyfusshapemlc6Julius-Louis Dreyfus is on the cover of the April issue of Shape magazine. Inside, the old “Seinfeld” sidekick and The New Adventures of Old Christine actress says she feels “guilty” for not being a vegetarian.

“I love vegetables— I should be a vegetarian, and I feel guilty saying I’m not,” says Julia. “But I like meat and chicken. So I buy organic foods whenever they’re available and shop at my local farmers’ market whenever I can. There’s something cozy about it. It’s a very friendly environment; you get to know the farmers. Plus, it’s better for the earth because the food is grown nearby, not flown in from some faraway place like South America.”

Has reading the teleprompter over all these years affected Julia’s vision? Has she not been to one of her “local” grocery stores and seen the abundant supply of fake chicken and other meats?

Thank goodness she’s at least getting her fruits and veggies local to help offset some of that meat and chicken carbon footprint.

“My biggest food vice is bacon,” she said. “In fact, I don’t keep bacon in my house — that would be way too tempting.”

There’s a substitute for that too, Julia.

Maybe the old Christine should go on some new adventures to the soy meat area the next time she goes shopping for some organic food.

Jason Donovan: A Vegan Soybean Addict?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 in Actors, Food & Drink, Male Singers.

Sony Radio Academy Awards - Arrivals

Jason Donovan is an Australian actor and singer, who like some in the entertainment business, dabbled in drugs. OK, not really dabbled, but made another part time career in it.

He once suffered a drug induced coma at Kate Moss’ 21st birthday party at the Viper Room, the same club where River Phoenix died two years before.

Once he and partner Angela Malloch had their eldest child, Jemma, he cleaned up his lifestyle, but has he become addicted to another pleasure? In an interview with the UK Times Online:

“We start here, and we toxify ourselves, we realise the damage we do, and we all become vegan f***ing soy bean addicts.”

A vegan soy bean addict sure sounds like fun. The drug is cheap, tasty, and is even good for you in moderate amounts.

While in some regions it may be hard to find, in others it’s on every street corner-at convenience stores, supermarkets, restaurants, and food carts.

And you never have to worry about developing a code word to ask for it.

Show us a dealer. We wanna get hooked.
