65th Annual Theatre World Awards in New York

The fifth annual Taking Action For Animals conference is wrapping up its last day and several stars showed up for a banquet to share their vegan and animal rights experiences.

Nellie McKay talked about her recently adopted pit bulls, who apparently love to eat some vegan things, because they’ve been chewing on her shoes, which she pointed out to the audience.

Humane Society of the United States president and CEO Wayne Pacelle talked about his decision to work with convicted dog fighting ringleader and ex Atlanta Falcons football player Michael Vick.

And Ginnifer Goodwin discussed how various “moments” like pouring milk over her cereal led to her making the vegan transition.

Gay Pride Weekend In London

There are numerous ways to pass the time while serving a jail or prison sentence.

Singer Boy George decided to make himself useful during his term by showing off his chef skills in the kitchen during his four months behind bars.

The 80s Culture Club and “Karma Kameleon” star convicted of falsely imprisoning a male escort said he made all the meatless food in prison.

“I’m a pretty good cook and made all the vegetarian food,” George said, according to the Daily Express.

Hey, it probably beats most prison commissary.

Luckily, George had access to all the ingredients he needed to make a good veg dish, as other prisoners, like Lizzy Borden’s Ira Black, aren’t so lucky.

From a recent Tweet, we definitely know Silverstein’s Shane Told likes one of Qdoba restaurant’s vegetarian options.

“Qdoba vegetarian tortilla soup… To die for.”

Many vegheads think they have to settle for a coke or french fries when dining with friends at fast food establishments.

Sometimes, even the french fries aren’t safe (remember the McDonald’s beefy fries?).

But alas, options exists, and depending on your standards (vegan, cooked in oil with meat, etc.), you don’t have to go hungry when going to Qdoba, Arby’s, or Burger King.

Vegetarian-restaurants.net has a little handy guide to the veggie menu at several fast food establishments. Of course, suppliers and policies change, even from franchise to franchise, so it’s always best to call and ask ahead.

Happy junk food hunting!

Tobey Maguire Suggests Vegetarian Changes To Child Nutrition Act

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, July 24th, 2009 in Actors, Children, Food & Drink.

37th AFI Life Achievement Award - Show

Tobey Maguire is getting into the game of improving school lunches, much like Wyntergrace Williams and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone.

The vegetarian actor recently wrote a letter to U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), urging lawmakers to reexamine the standards set by the Child Nutrition Act (CNA). The legislation — initially passed in 1966 – is up for Congressional re-authorization this fall, giving lawmakers a wonderful opportunity to make changes.

Changes such as making schools stop serving beef nachos everyday and put veggie burgers on the menu.

Tobey cited a recent article by the Chicago Tribune, which revealed that Chicago public schools serve beef nachos everyday because the federal government’s commodity foods program “dumps surplus beef on schools across the country.”

“School is tough enough already — students shouldn’t have to put up with lunches swimming in fat and cholesterol,” Tobey wrote.

Tobey suggests that vegetarian meals may even costs schools less while getting children in shape.

“Being overweight can be a miserable experience for children. It affects their grades and sets them up to be unhealthy adults.”

“Higher rates of obesity, heart disease and diabetes mean greater healthcare costs for everyone. Healthy foods can help prevent those problems, so federal dollars spent on better school meals are a smart investment.”

If you’re interested in taking Tobey’s lead, contact your legislators and write to them.

skittles-791435

Nellie McKay has expressed her love for junk food and the interest in manufacturing more junk food for vegans.

The singer and songwriter may have gotten her wish because Skittles has taken the gelatin out of their candies.

Weird fact: Skittles had already taken the junk out of  their trunk (a.k.a. the gelatin from their product) in other countries. What took them so long to get on board in the U.S.?

But now’s not the time for criticism. Let’s give it up for Skittles and show ’em how we appreciate them making a mainstream product veg friendly.

Ana Ortiz: One Of Those Vegetarian Until Pregnant Women

Chandra Wilson Debuts In Chicago On Broadway - Arrivals & Curtain Call

Talk about news!

How is it we are just now finding out about Ana Ortiz being a vegetarian? She must be keeping mum because there are very few sources about her being one.

Sadly, we are here to report that the Ugly Betty actress, like other women we’ve reported on, gave into insatiable meat cravings during her pregnancy.

From an interview with cookiemag.com:

“During my pregnancy, it has been much more difficult [to stay vegetarian] because I have really been craving meat. So I make sure it is local, grass-fed, and healthy—as healthy as possible. Otherwise, I stick to vegetarianism.”

Ana had mentioned she wanted to bring her baby up as eco-friendly as possible and we had suggested she and baby go veg.

Hopefully, now that little Paloma Louise Lebenzon is done cooking in the oven, Ana will go back to the veg life-taking the tyke with her.

Say, does anybody know the phenomena behind those crazy meat cravings during pregnancy? Any PhDs or other researchers out there? What gives?

Vogues 1 Year Anniversary Party For 3.1 Phillip Lims LA Store - Inside

Vegetarian singer Leona Lewis rescued a rabbit who may have become dinner had she not done so.

Leona was shopping in Los Angeles when she spotted a homeless man walking around with a white rabbit.

When she asked him what he planned to do with the rabbit, the homeless man replied, “Don’t know, probably eat it.”

Leona bought the rabbit for $100 and told the homeless man to buy food with the money.

The lucky rabbit, named Melrose, now hangs out in Leona’s garden.
