Christie Brinkley Never Had The McDonald’s Burger Experience

Christie Brinkley

Christie Brinkley was fortunate enough to go veg before she bit her teeth into a McDonald’s hamburger.

When talking with Shape Magazine, the model who is just four years shy of 60 revealed her only experience was a french fry and a taste of shake. Both of those ended badly.

Shape.com: You’ve never had McDonalds?

Christie: “Never. Never ever in my whole life. I’ve never tasted McDonalds or Jack in the Box, because I was a vegetarian before those ever existed. I’ve tasted one of their French fries, pure grease, and I’ve tasted one of their malts. Yuck. I don’t even like the taste of it. I don’t like the film it leaves behind on my tongue. It just doesn’t feel good to me at all.

Vegetarian or vegan food at fast food establishments doesn’t restrict you to french fries (which, sometimes, like the case of McDonald’s, still aren’t vegetarian thanks to the addition of items like “natural beef flavor”).

Taco Bell’s refried beans are vegan and getting an item without cheese and sour cream can provide a fulfilling, quick meal for a vegetarian or vegan.

Further evidence that a vegetarian or vegan should never take a job involving handling meat, as your duties may including eating on the job.

It seems at one McDonald’s restaurant in Porto Alegre, Brazil, a manager was required to taste test every day for “quality control.” Naturally, he blew up like a golden arch to 230 pounds and was awarded $17,500 for the damages, enough to purchase some healthy vegetarian items to help get him on his way back to the healthy 154 pounds he weighed on day one of the job.

Rory Freedman Former Junk Food “Skinny Bitch”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 14th, 2010 in Authors, Food & Drink, Videos.

Sure, she may be the queen of dispensing advice on eating right on a vegan diet, but Skinny Bitch author Rory Freedman used to be a junk food lover, as she reveals in this latest video during an interview with PETA.

“I’m the girl who used to eat fast food every single day of my life,” Freedman says.

Veganism should be about health, but that doesn’t mean it always needs to be the brown rice and kale Freedman is getting cozy with in the camera. Veggier versions of desserts and vegetarian fast food restaurants are popping up around the globe.

Taco Bell Invades India–Heidi And Spencer Soon To Follow

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 26th, 2010 in Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Heidi Montag, Spencer Pratt & Taco Bell Raise Awareness For World Hunger

Taco Bell has set up shop in India.

Hopefully, for the citizens’ sake, Heidi and Spencer won’t rush there to try the paneer tacos anytime soon.

In a country known for its vegetarian dishes, the fast food giant has compromised to fit the culture’s standards at its first restaurant in Bangalore.

Half the menu is vegetarian, with such items denoted by a green dot.

Tacos can be topped with native cheeses like paneer and a potato taco (a crunchy, Mexican flavored samosa-like treat?) is also available.

“It took us over two years to perfect our three Vs for India — value, vegetarian and variety,” said Taco Bell’s general manager in India, Ashok Bajpai.

Two additional restaurants are expected to open in Bangalore this year, with the goal of 100 by 2015.

Radhika Oswal Interview On Otarian And Vegetarian Fast Food

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 in Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Otarian, The Planet s Most Sustainable Restaurant - Bleecker Street Opening

Radhika Oswal just opened the New York outlet of her string of fast food vegetarian restaurants, Otarian.

The restaurant, which has a location in London, was constructed from recycled materials and lists the environmental impact of each dish on the menu compared to a meat one.

When she wasn’t counting carbons for a future menu item, Radhika took time to speak with Black Book Magazine on several matters, including her favorite foods and why a vegetarian fast food restaurant works.

On fast food v.s. fine dining:
We wanted to reach the masses. Vegetarian food is really misunderstood at the moment. I didn’t think people would be willing to sit for hours in a place to eat vegetarian food when they could spend $14 in 10 minutes. It’s just simple logic, really.

Favorite vegetarian dishes:
I like the Tex Mex Burger. I love the Biryani. I love the flatbread. I am Indian by culture, so, I love the spicy foods.

Typical mistakes that vegetarians make in their dietary choices:
Vegetarians who have been vegetarians for long don’t make many mistakes. I think it’s people who are trying to eat more vegetarian food make the mistake of not knowing the correct nutritional requirements around the carbs or not knowing the daily servings of vegetables and fruits. Balancing, especially things like vitamin D and B, in your diet are important.

From a recent Tweet, we definitely know Silverstein’s Shane Told likes one of Qdoba restaurant’s vegetarian options.

“Qdoba vegetarian tortilla soup… To die for.”

Many vegheads think they have to settle for a coke or french fries when dining with friends at fast food establishments.

Sometimes, even the french fries aren’t safe (remember the McDonald’s beefy fries?).

But alas, options exists, and depending on your standards (vegan, cooked in oil with meat, etc.), you don’t have to go hungry when going to Qdoba, Arby’s, or Burger King.

Vegetarian-restaurants.net has a little handy guide to the veggie menu at several fast food establishments. Of course, suppliers and policies change, even from franchise to franchise, so it’s always best to call and ask ahead.

Happy junk food hunting!

Benji And Joel Madden Create Denny’s Veg Burritos

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, February 14th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Dennys All Nighter

Denny's All Nighter

Veg Brothers Benji and Joel Madden of Good Charlotte recently made vegetarian and vegan burritos at Denny’s in Los Angeles!

The burritos will be available on Denny’s Allnighter Rockstar Menu.

Yes, Canadians may have their KFC vegan faux chicken sandwich, but now folks in the U.S. have another veg option in a traditionally fast food restaurant.

Since Benji and Joel are both known and outspoken vegetarians as well as known rockstars, who better to choose to be the poster boys of veg Denny’s?

The Rock Star Menus were created when Denny’s allowed musicians like Katy Perry, Taking Back Sunday, Boys Like Girls, and Hoobastank into the kitchen (dangerous, we know) to cook up what they like to chow down on after hours.

Benji and Joel’s creations will be featured on the third Rock Star Menu, which is launching this summer.

Men with guitars are sexy enough. Men with guitars who can cook are almost too much to handle.

You can view more pics of the Madden brothers in Denny’s Kitchen over at Denny’s blog.
