Quantcast Vegetarian Starpescatarian

Al Sharpton

“I don’t eat any meat. I only eat fish twice a week, and I eat only vegetables and fruit, and I’ve lost total. … I was at my height about 305, now I’m down to 180, 185.”

Al Sharpton, during an interview on The Wendy Williams Show. Just a quick reminder to Al and the rest of you pescatarians–fish is meat too. But congratulations to him for making a drastic change in his life for better health.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 in Animal Issues, Food & Drink, Politicians, Reality TV.

Sarah Palin

She beats fish. Shoots caribou. Likes shooting wolves from the sky. Says “Bambi’s mother is dinner” and that there’s “plenty of room for all of Alaska’s animals” next to the mashed potatoes on her plate.

Man, is Sarah Palin a great inspiration to vegetarians. No, really.

In a post written at vegetarian.about.com, readers were invited to reveal the moment that made them go veg.

What’s better than a pescatarian who only eats more sustainable wild caught fish? A former pescatarian who’s even better for the environment because she eats zero fish!

Kirsten Vangsness of Criminal Minds has given up Charlie for good and become a full time vegetarian!

It appears that the CBS series where Vangsness stars as the FBI’s top technical analyst put a temporary cramp in her vegetarian lifestyle and she started to consume fish.

“It’s been 10 years, except for at the beginning of the show when I got out of it and ate fish,” Vangness told Vegetarian Times in the January/February 2011 issue.

Chuck D

“My thing is this – everything has to be able to be done with some kind of commitment and passion, and some reason that isn’t blown out of proportion and taken for granted.”

Chuck D of Public Enemy during an interview with The Vine. Chuck eats a more sustainable diet by being a fish-eating vegetarian and he also is a human and animal rights activist.

If you follow the pescatarian diet, you should know, scientists have shown fish feel pain too. If you are still comfortable with your decision, please choose seafood wisely, eating only varieties that are not overfished and contain the least amount of unhealthy toxins like mercury.

Kirsten Vangsness plays Penelope Garcia, the technical analyst of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit on Criminal Minds with a warm and quirky personality that has a knack for finding all the right answers quickly.

Vangsness told Mother Nature Network about her green activities on the set of Criminal Minds, which include installing a water filter instead of using plastic bottles. She is almost a full time vegetarian, eating wild caught fish occasionally.

Wild fish beat their farmed counterparts in many areas of nutrition and eco-friendliness. They have more usable omega-3 fatty acids, less fat, are packaged without the use of artificial dyes to the flesh and come with less pesticides and environmentally destructive chemicals found at  higher levels in farmed fish like endocrine disrupting flame-retardant additives.

Rod Stewart and his wife Penny Lancaster are happily expecting a baby in March of 2011, but the couple’s happiness could have been threatened by fish.

Lancaster is a lover of seafood and had to be counseled by her doctor about the dangers of consuming mercury-laden fish, especially during pregnancy.

“I love fish and I thought that it was healthy without understanding the high mercury levels that fish like tuna, swordfish and halibut can contain,” Lancaster, 39, told Hello! in its latest issue, according to People.

“My doctor said it was unhealthy to have so much mercury in my body, and also for conceiving babies.”

Pescatarian is better than a red meat eater, but mercury levels found in fish can affect brain and nervous system development and the FDA has issued guidelines for groups at-risk for being affected the most–pregnant women, women trying to get pregnant and children.

KT Tunstall is the latest celebrity to comment on the Lady-Gaga-Meat-Dress-Saga. Yes, amazingly enough, that is still considered news.

Tunstall says that while she understands why vegetarians and vegans are so upset, Gaga’s dress worn for the cover of Vogue Japan isn’t much different from people wearing leather.

“As soon as I saw it, I thought, what is the difference between that and leather? Animals die needlessly for leather all the time.”

“I haven’t heard a legitimate reason why anyone would be offended by her wearing meat, except for vegans angry about animals being killed, which is fair enough.”

Tunstall, a pescatarian, recently took her own hit of controversy with vegetarians when she ate black pudding, a dish made of congealed pig’s blood.

A little steak on the hips. Pig’s blood to the lips. Can we all agree to aim to stop using animals for human purposes period and call it a day?

Alton Brown has seen to it that bluefin tuna will no longer be used on Iron Chef America.

The host of the Food Network show had previously said he would boycott Nobu restaurant until it removed the endangered species from the menu. Recently, however, Makoto Okuwa served up a dish using bluefin tuna belly, which prompted a food blogger to address Brown about the issue, according to LA Weekly.
