Quantcast Vegetarian StarRod Stewart Wife Penny Lancaster Pregnancy Threatened By High Mercury Fish

Rod Stewart and his wife Penny Lancaster are happily expecting a baby in March of 2011, but the couple’s happiness could have been threatened by fish.

Lancaster is a lover of seafood and had to be counseled by her doctor about the dangers of consuming mercury-laden fish, especially during pregnancy.

“I love fish and I thought that it was healthy without understanding the high mercury levels that fish like tuna, swordfish and halibut can contain,” Lancaster, 39, told Hello! in its latest issue, according to People.

“My doctor said it was unhealthy to have so much mercury in my body, and also for conceiving babies.”

Pescatarian is better than a red meat eater, but mercury levels found in fish can affect brain and nervous system development and the FDA has issued guidelines for groups at-risk for being affected the most–pregnant women, women trying to get pregnant and children.

Pregnant or trying to get pregnant ladies should never consume fish that are highest in mercury like Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel, or Tilefish.

For fish that is lower in mercury like shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish, no more than 12 ounces or 2 meals per week are advised.

The adage for greenies is that local is better, but it’s still recommended that you check with local advisories before consuming seafood caught in your region. If no advice is available, only eat 6 ounces (1 meal) of locally caught fish per week and consume no other fish that week.

The Natural Resources Defense Council has a handy pocket guide that can be printed that provides guidance for anyone, with child or not, on choosing healthier fish.
