Farm Sanctuary 25th anniversary gala

Time‘s “Ecocentric” blog has covered Farm Sanctuary’s 25th anniversary gala in the tastiest of ways.

Bryan Walsh had the pleasure of attending the gala and sampling the vegan food that was created in a joint effort by David Lee, founder of vegan meats Field Roast, and Paolo Dorigato of Cipriani in Manhattan where the celebration was held.

Walsh is an omnivore, but if he had someone to prepare the meal he ate last weekend, especially the Field Roast Porcini Dijon Crusted Cutlet, he might reconsider eating real meat for good.

Rory Freedman Farm Sanctuary Gala for Farm Animals

“Years later I went to a Farm Sanctuary event and I saw these cows. Their utters were so enormous that they were dragging down the ground that they were limping and falling down. And this is happening because I eat cheese! I said never ever again. That was it!”

Rory Freedman, co-author of the best selling Skinny Bitch books, in an interview with Global Grind on what made her change from vegetarian to vegan. Because cows on farms are forced to produce unnaturally large volumes of milk–often with the assistance of machines–they’re likely to have breasts sorer than what you’d experience after a usual mammogram. A bacterial infection in the udders, mastitis, is very common in dairy cows but they are also prone to developing Bovine Leukemia Virus, Bovine Immunodeficiency Virus, and Johne’s disease (the human counterpart to Crohn’s disease).

“When programs like “The Martha Stewart Show” devote valuable air-time to the plight of farm animals and the benefits of veganism, a powerful message is planted in the public consciousness demonstrating that these issues are important and worthy of our consideration. Stewart has built a media empire based on her uncanny ability to influence the tastes and opinions of consumers. When she speaks about the importance of showing compassion for farm animals, millions of people — many of whom may never have considered these issues before — listen.”

Gene Baur, president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, and one of the guests on Martha Stewart‘s vegan episode which aired earlier this week. Martha recently adopted an animal on the sanctuary, a sheep named Persia.

Biz Stone Thinks Both Farm Sanctuary And Egypt Teach Empathy

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, February 25th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Business.

Biz Stone

The last time someone attempted to show a connection between the U.S. and Egypt, it was Jon Stewart forcing a camel to stand outside in the snow. As you can see from the video, that attempt was a big FAIL.

The vegan co-founder of Twitter has made a connection between a historic uprising in the Middle East and one of the United State’s most active sanctuaries for abused and abandoned farm animals, Farm Sanctuary. In Biz Stone‘s opinion, both the sanctuary and the events in Egypt teach the lesson of human empathy.

“I think empathy is what it’s about,” Stone was quoted by the Herald Tribune as saying. “Technology in general, and social media especially, are helping the world become a smaller place. These days, you can look down on your mobile phone and see what’s happening halfway around the world, walk in their shoes, and feel an empathy you wouldn’t otherwise feel.”

Bill Maher Asks Obama To Send Pardoned Turkeys To Sanctuary

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Comedians, TV Hosts.

Bill Maher

Farm Sanctuary has already extended an offer to President Obama to send this year’s pardoned turkey to its grounds instead of the usual destination for the birds, a Disney theme park.

Now, Bill Maher has written a letter on behalf of PETA, asking the president to consider the birds who, in Maher’s words, have a retirement “as empty as Cher‘s “Farewell” tour” if not sent to a place where trained individuals can properly care for the already neglected animals.

“In recent years, turkeys have simply been shuffled from the pardoning ceremony to displays at pseudo-sanctuaries or theme parks, and many have died less than a year later, before the following year’s turkeys have even made it to the Rose Garden. McDonald’s so-called “Happy Meals” have a longer shelf life.”

“I propose a New Rule: From now on, let’s bring credibility to the ceremony and genuine compassion to “pardoned” turkeys by sending them to a real sanctuary.”

Ady Gil

Ady Gil is a successful entrepreneur who, as a founding partner of American Hi Definition (AHD) and Sweetwater Digital, has made contributions to digital services for film and television. This year, Ady is matching Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt-A-Turkey adoptions up to $50,000. Vegetarian Star had the opportunity to conduct an exclusive interview with Ady about animal welfare, the Thanksgiving holiday and his vision for former president of the United States Bill Clinton.

How did you get involved with Farm Sanctuary and the Adopt-A-Turkey campaign?
It was my ex-girlfriend who in 1999 told me that she was adopting a turkey. She was a vegetarian, and she told me for Thanksgiving she was adopting a turkey. I didn’t know exactly what it meant then, but she told me you had to send the fee. It was $20 at the time. It was sort of symbolic, but you get a card with the picture of the turkey. The year before I ate turkey for Thanksgiving, and that year I did not. It did not make my Thanksgiving any worse. Not at all did it affect my life to not eat turkey. I adopted the turkey, and I felt proud like I saved a life, without touching it. Not always can you save a life by touching it – sometimes you can, like with an injured dog or a bird you find you might bring it to the vet, but most of the time you can’t touch the lives you save and you need an organization that can touch the lives. I see Farm Sanctuary as an avenue to save farm animals.

Recently, two large chicken producers in the U.S, Bell & Evans and Mary’s, announced they’re changing the way they slaughter chickens. Instead of electrical stunning, they’ll be using methods similar to what many in Europe and the UK do by knocking the birds out with gas first. What are your thoughts on this more “humane” way of killing and do you view changes like this as real progress for animal welfare?
I cannot put the two words together – killing and humane. I do not believe they can really coexist in one sentence. Is it less cruel? I think it is. But is it still cruel? Sure it is. Is it more humane? Sure it is. But is it humane? No. Is it better? Sure it is. But is it still evil? Yes. But it’s less evil, and so less evil is better than more evil, right? If in the last ten seconds they don’t suffer, that’s better. If they suffer their whole lives and we can give them their last ten seconds without suffering, then that’s better. Any second counts. But I do not think that killing can be humane.
