Meatless Mouthful–Rory Freedman Found Cheese Udderly Cruel

“Years later I went to a Farm Sanctuary event and I saw these cows. Their utters were so enormous that they were dragging down the ground that they were limping and falling down. And this is happening because I eat cheese! I said never ever again. That was it!”
–Rory Freedman, co-author of the best selling Skinny Bitch books, in an interview with Global Grind on what made her change from vegetarian to vegan. Because cows on farms are forced to produce unnaturally large volumes of milk–often with the assistance of machines–they’re likely to have breasts sorer than what you’d experience after a usual mammogram. A bacterial infection in the udders, mastitis, is very common in dairy cows but they are also prone to developing Bovine Leukemia Virus, Bovine Immunodeficiency Virus, and Johne’s disease (the human counterpart to Crohn’s disease).
