When Kal Penn and co-star John Cho finally made it to White Castle in the first of the Harold and Kumar series, Kal chowed down on vegetarian “White Castle burgers” specially prepared for him.

Have you ever wondered what goes into those beautiful food scenes on television? How does a vegan actress appear to be eating turkey, when it’s really made of soybeans?

The New York Times has the lowdown on several grub events that took place in Hollywood film, and what went on behind the scenes so the actors could munch smoothly.

In the 2008 film, Pride and Glory, for example, three of the actresses were vegetarian or vegan, including Lake Bell.

Ruth DiPasquale, an assistant property master for the film, called a vegan chef to help create a Christmas dinner scene with ham as the centrepiece. Bell and the other veg actresses ate pieces of “sham ham.”

Says the New York Times:

“She ended up piling slices of sham ham made from soybeans near the real stuff, careful to make sure the two versions never touched.”

Bob Barker Meets With Principal Chief To End Bear Displays In NC

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, July 30th, 2009 in Animal Issues, TV Hosts.

Bob Barker loves his fans

A letter gets your message across, but there’s nothing like face to face interaction.

Several weeks ago, Bob Barker wrote a letter to the Principal Chief of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation, asking for an end to the caged bear pits that serve as a tourist attraction in Cherokee, North Carolina.

On Tuesday, Bob met with Chief Principal Michell Hicks and five other members of the Tribal council, asking that the caged bears be turned over to an animal sanctuary.

The bears exist in walled enclosures rooted in the ground at three local attractions in Cherokee.

“To think that with as advanced as our civilization is now that there is any place in the United States were bears are kept in pits is just unbelievable,” said Barker. “Just picture yourself, if your life, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, month after month, was in a pit.”

Vegetarian Barker is part Cherokee himself and grew up on a reservation in South Dakota.

Heather Mills’ Daughter Beatrice Publicly Calls Out Meat Eaters

Heather Mills Launches V-Bites Restaurant

Ah, children.

So sweet, innocent, and cute.

Until they’re old enough to talk about how you do everything wrong.

But we can’t help but giggle and cheer for the fact that Heather Mills’ daughter with ex Beatles singer Paul McCartney, Beatrice, likes to question people about their eating habits.

On a trip to Southern France, Heather, Beatrice, and Paul were shunned by their fellow guests because their daughter couldn’t stop asking people why they were eating animals.

“Beatrice questions everybody who eats animals,” Heather said. “When we were in the south of France, there was a buffet for kids, and by the end of the week no one would sit near us because she would go over and say Why are you eating that cow’s bottom?’ or Oh, look at that little shrimp with little eyes’.”

An outspoken activist in the making.

Superheroes: What Would Emily Deschanel Do?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, July 30th, 2009 in Actresses.

(500) Days of Summer Los Angeles Premiere

Instyle.com caught up with several actresses at Comic-Con to ask what they would do if they could be superheros.

Emily Deschanel’s superhero vision isn’t that far fetched, as there are already plenty of ladies putting cabbage around their bodies.

“I’d wear a lot of lettuce and turn everything into vegetarian meals. I could turn everybody into vegans and stop all cruelty in general.”

Sounds like the ultimate superfantasy.

What would you do if you played superhero for a day, week, or forever? Allow endangered species to thrive? Veganize all fast food restaurants? Chit chat with your favorite animal friend?

**RESTRICTIONS APPLY** Moby at The Hangover premiere event at Vue cinema in London

“New York is a big, gritty city, but it’s also the easiest place in the world to eat well. Within a 10-minute walk of my studio, there are probably 20 vegetarian restaurants. My favorite is still one of the oldest vegetarian restaurants in New York: Angelica Kitchen, on 12th Street. I’ve probably eaten there 2,000 times in my life. I like the fact that it’s been around for so long; it doesn’t take credit cards and there’s still always a line out the door.”

—-Moby, in a letter explaining why the vegan restaurant, Angelica Kitchen, is one of many reasons he loves New York.

Angelica’s has been feeding veggie New Yorkers since 1976, and features both everyday and special menus filled with delish vegan dishes like the Open Face Tempeh Sandwich, miso soup, noodle dishes and much more.

Potentially being able to spy on Moby makes another great reason to stop by.

Woody Harrelson Convinced Zombieland Director To Go Vegetarian

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 in Actors, Directors and Producers.

Zombieland panel at the San Diego Comic Con in CA

Woody Harrelson converted someone to vegetarianism, if only temporary.

During the filming of an upcoming film, Zombieland, Woody convinced director Ruben Fleischer to eat vegetarian during the duration of the shoot.

“The script is fantastic,” Jesse Einsenberg, who plays Columbus, told altpress.com. “Of course the premise is silly-there’s no way to describe it without sounding silly-but the script is great. It’s really wonderful and unique, and the characters are fantastic. Woody Harrelson is in it, and the director agreed to become a vegetarian for the duration of the shoot because Woody Harrelson is vegan.”

And let’s give it up for the environmentally friendly set.

“The set is pretty eco-friendly, actually. We recycle a lot onset, which is good, because movies are a very wasteful industry.”

Zombieland is set to the premise that after America is ravaged by a zombie plague, the few lone survivors run from the living dead, arriving at a theme park they believe to be safe.
