Alicia Silverstone Recommends Farmers’ Markets For Cheap Veg Eating

2009 Heart Of Green Awards

Emily Deschanel is not the only vegan actress to enjoy her local farmers’ market.

Alicia Silverstone recently interviewed with Glamour Magazine where she answers some questions about her vegan diet and lifestyle.

It’s no secret that fresh, organic produce and other staples of a vegetarian or vegan diet aren’t always cheap. Alicia gave some tips for making the transition easier on your pocketbook.

“The best way to save money is to go to a Farmer’s Market. Buy seasonal produce [that is grown locally]. It’s really, really cheap. I spend anywhere from $40 to $60 a week on produce. And that feeds my husband, my dogs, and me. My other grocery bill is a little bit more expensive, but that’s because I like making decadent desserts.”

“I would say to people who are concerned: I don’t go to the doctor; I don’t buy any prescriptions, antacids, or birth control. I don’t suffer from any illnesses. Consider it an investment for your health. And save money on other things. I look to eBay or Craigslist for deals on things to save money. Also, buy what you can in bulk.”

Wyntergrace Williams, Montel Williams’ daughter, is inviting the Obama girls to get in on the vegetarian school lunch action!

Not long ago, we brought you the news that Wyntergrace is urging everyone to sign a petition asking congress to ensure more vegetarian options are available in school lunches.

This week, she’ll be headed to Washington, D.C. to ask Congress to change the Child Nutrition act to require public schools to include healthy, vegetarian options. She’s also written a letter to Sasha and Malia Obama in hopes they will help her with her cause.

“My name is Wyntergrace and I’m a big fan of yours. It seems that we have a few things in common. We all love dogs, live on the East Coast, have fantastic moms and maternal grand moms and both of our dads are quite famous. In our household we also eat healthy foods and I am working on a school project to get healthier foods in schools across the country. I would love for you to join my campaign and sign my petition and encourage other students and families to follow our own and respective families’ lead.”

“The problem is that many schools do not offer enough healthful choices. This is especially true when it comes to vegetarian meals. A lot of us ask for vegetarian meals out of compassion for animals, like I do, or because of concerns about health or the environment, but all students would benefit from having a variety of healthy options, and other plant-based meals available.”

Jane Velez-Mitchell is tackling animal rights and vegan issues on television once again!

During a recent Issues With Jane Velez-Mitchell, the vegan television anchor discussed the recent swine flu outbreak and its possible link to inhumane factory farming of pigs. Some scientists believe when pigs are kept in such confined conditions as they are in factory farms, their immune systems cannot fight infections.

There have been at least 40 CDC confirmed swine flu cases in the United States during this outbreak.

She interviewed Dr. Michael Greger, Director of Public Health and Animal Agriculture of the Humane Society of the United States.

“When thousands of animals are overcrowded together in these filthy football field size sheds to lie in, nose to nose in their own waste, it’s a breeding ground for disease.,” said Dr. Gregor. “The perfect storm environment for the emergence and spread for these new diseases.”

Watch the video to hear Dr. Greger and Jane discuss more about the possible link between pig factory farms and swine flu.

Elijah Wood Stealing Vegetarian Compliments From Tobey Maguire

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 29th, 2009 in Actors.

The Cinema Society & Vanity Fair Host A Screening Of Appaloosa

Elijah Wood is such a meat eating fraud.

The actor was printing photos at Cosco when a fan approached him and complimented him on sticking to his vegetarian diet for so long.

Elijah isn’t a vegetarian, and later he realized the fan had mistaken him for Tobey Maguire.

Elijah went along with it anyway.

Boo, boo, and triple boo!

Elijah is no Tobey Maguire. He is not an obsessive Real Food Daily patron. He does not hang at Prop 2 parties with his fellow veggie and animal rights peeps.

If Elijah wants his vegetarian compliments, he should earn it like every other meatless celeb does: Go veg!
