Top Chef Host, Hardee’s Gal Padma Lakshmi Has Vegetarian Past

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, February 26th, 2009 in Not So Vegetarian, TV Hosts.

2009 Film Independent Spirit Awards - Arrivals

A very, very distant vegetarian past.

Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi is starring in a commercial for Hardee’s, advertising the fast food giant’s Bacon Western Thickburger.

Lakshmi has no problem chowing away on that pork and beef, but there was a time…

“I grew up a vegetarian,” Lakshmi told People. “Then, because I grew up in the states, I started slowly eating meat. First it was bologna sandwiches, or pepperoni on pizza. As a teenager, [my friends and I] would always go have burgers. I would scarf them down!”

Seems like Padma is just one of the many examples of those who immigrate to the US and unfortunately, adopt unhealthy diets  in addition to other American cultural practices.

Thickburger girl says she works out like crazy and doesn’t just sit around eating burgers all day, which is why she’s still able to maintain her trim figure. But Padma, really? How trim are your arteries?

The commercial was directed by Chris Applebaum, the same guy who brought Paris Hilton and a burger together for a 2005 Hardee’s ad.

It’s time a veg celebrity did a promo for some fake meat. What do you guys think? Pamela Anderson wearing nothing but a Boca burger? Ginnifer Goodwin with a soystache?

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi will be honored by the Humane Society next month for their love of animals, so it’s both ironic and disappointing that it’s been brought to our attention that vegan Ellen is the Cover gal for Cover Girl cosmetics, a company that still tests on animals.

Even more ironic, the ads featuring Ellen will debut around the time she is given her award.

Deceiver.com put its ever so sarcastic slant on things:

Proposition 2, eh? I remember that. It was right around the time she signed up to become Cover Girl’s newest spokesmodel, despite the fact the beauty company is the largest that still tests on animals. Die, bunnies!

Ironically those print ads just started appearing in the March issues of all the magazines. Great timing there, HSUS.

We’ve learned before that celebrities don’t always investigate companies before representing them. We’ve also learned that celebrities make decisions that seem to completely contradict other behaviors.

Even Portia called Ellen out on their first date for wearing calfskin leather.

The decision to live ethically is an ongoing process of keeping informed and doing your research. Have you supported a company in the past only to stop after finding out some of their business decisions were against your beliefs?

Ellen And Portia To Receive Wyler Award By Humane Society

35th Annual People's Choice Awards - Backstage

Quite possibly Hollywood’s newest vegan couple, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi will be honored for their efforts to improve care for animals at the Humane Society’s Genesis Awards next month.

The Wyler Award, named after the late Genesis Award founder, Gretchen Wyler, is given to celebrities or other public figures who have made the most noise in standing up for the better treatment of animals.

Looks like they’ve made the right choice. Where do we start?

Portia and Ellen both became vegans this year, saying no to every animal product, whether flesh or a byproduct. They both were active in getting the word out on Prop 2, the measure which passed in California to allow certain farm animals to move around freely.

They even share their lifestyle with people who are fortunate enough to be in their presence. The wedding reception menu was completely vegan. Ellen has given out vegan items quite a few times on her television show.

Wow. That’s a lot of hard work, guys. Have a cold one on us. You deserve it!

Dave Chappelle, What The Veg Hell?

Dave Chappelle Signs Copies Of

We already told you what watching TV on a Saturday night can bring on (like a horrible parody of Joaquin Phoenix rapping and selling hamburgers), so you’d think we’d learn. But no.

The Dave Chappelle Show, which ran from 2003-2006 on Comedy Central, is syndicated on various television networks.

Dave’s not a known vegetarian, but even an omnivore can go to extremes. Like in this part fantasy, part reality skit where Dave invites you into his home while he cooks dinosaur egg.

The show starts off with Dave opening the door, wearing a reversible coat made of “panda fur” and “snakeskin.”

Upon entering, we see chicken bones hanging from the ceiling.

The final blow comes when Dave removes a dinosaur egg from his refrigerator and starts to scramble it. Remembering he has yet another egg left, he retrieves that one as well, but the dinosaur is starting to hatch before he can crack the egg and cook it. As the baby dinosaur peeks his head out of the egg, Dave excitedly shouts that life is happening right before he takes a pair of cutters and snaps off its head. Nice.

Don’t even get us started on his eating animal penis for a mock episode of “Fear Factor.”

You might find his “Jedi Sex Scandal” video a little funnier.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, February 10th, 2009 in Actresses, Couples, Polls/Surveys, TV Hosts, Who Would You.

Yes, we know it’s cruel to pit spouses against each other, but when it comes to chowing down on a delicious veggie burger, it’s a soy dog eat soy dog world. Both vegan ladies recently had a big birthday bash, Ellen turning 51, and Portia 36. So between the two of them, who would you do…

If you’re up late watching Fox on Saturday night, you’re lucky enough to be entertained by the handsome and funny Spike Feresten on his Talk Show with Spike Feresten.

Feresten has a segment called “Comedy for Stoners,” which features skits so bizarre, most people would think only someone under the influence imagines them (hence why only the stoned should find it comical, in Spike’s theory).

Recently, Spike aired a Comedy for Stoners which made fun of Joaquin Phoenix’s new rap career.

Joaquin is rapping in an apartment, when part of his “rhyme” is “turn up the radiator,” which he does and results in his electrocution. While Joaquin is passed out, he goes into a fantasy world where he has a conversation with a hamburger and almost eats it.

Yes, Spike has the vegan Joaquin Phoenix wanting to eat a hamburger! And there’s no Boca box nearby.

The hamburger convinces Joaquin not to eat him, but to eat his own beard instead, which Joaquin thinks is cotton candy due to his hallucinations.

My goodness, are you still reading this? Because even if you aren’t stoned, the weirdness itself is probably making you hallucinate.

In the end, because he came so close to eating the hamburger, Joaquin wakes from the dream deciding his next career move is to dress scantily while playing the cello and giving away hamburgers on the street.

And that’s Spike’s comical spin on how Joaquin similarly decided to go into rap. Fans of Phoenix know this is ridiculous.

The real Joaquin would have soy burger sign at his stand.

You can watch the episode which contains the Joaquin Phoenix Comedy for Stoners clip around minute 37 at Fox.com.

If you like watching the “Extras” portion on DVDs you should take a look at these outtakes from Stephen Colbert’s Paul McCartney interview.

“Here’s my problem with vegetarianism,” says Colbert. “You can’t hunt vegetables. You cannot stalk a stalk of broccoli. You can’t fire off a shotgun into a field of asparagus.”

Paul suggests another type of “hunt” that takes place in your supermarket after spotting the vegetable of your choice.

“You don’t have to fire…lasso them…Broccoli, you’re mine…Straight to the checkout counter.”

Watch the video for laughs from scenes that didn’t, but should have, made the cut.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck Defends Sarah Palin On The View

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, February 6th, 2009 in Animal Issues, TV Hosts, Videos.

Ashley Judd came to the defense of the wolves Sarah Palin advocated killing, now a celebrity is coming to Palin’s defense.

Elizabeth Hasselbeck of  The View is upset because she feels celebrities stand up for animal rights more than they do humans. She recently spoke about  Judd collaborating with the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund to expose Sarah Palin’s environmental track record.

“The problem that I have here is like a lot of these vocal celebrities, in a way, get very loud about these animal killings. Like is she loud as..she said, ‘How many wolves have been killed? 900 this year.’ Is she as loud about the 260,000 kids killed in abortions?”

Her comment results in Joyce Behar asking her to stick to talking about wolves as the discussion heats up.

The stereotype among many non animal rights activists is that the activists have more regard for animals than people. Do you think if animal rights activists voiced their support for human rights more often (while continuing to vouch for animals), they’d get a better reputation?

Chime in and let us know your thought!
