Recently Barack Obama hosted chef Bobby Flay and several men from local D.C. schools at the Kick Off Young Men’s barbecue on the White House South Lawn.

This makes, what, strike three?

Ray’s Hell burger visit with vice president Joe Biden, the Cheeseburger incident at Five Guys, and now a barbecue on the White House lawn.

Grilled steak, corn, and chicken were on the menu, but no where on the White House blog did it mention a veggie burger.

Mr. Obama doesn’t appear to be practicing what he preached last year on the campaign trail when he said encouraging Americans to eat more plant based foods can clean up the healthcare mess by reducing rates of obesity related diseases like diabetes.

At least First Lady Michelle Obama is promoting eating more vegetables.

Michaelle Jean Causes Rise In Seal Meat Popularity

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian, Politicians.

Canadas Governor General welcomes Japans Imperial Couple

Bad news for seals everywhere.

In May, Canada’s governor general Michaelle Jean was taped by the media eating a raw seal heart she personally killed.

This, in combination with the recent European Union ban on imports of Canadian seal products has contributed to an increase in the request for seal meat at restaurants in Canada.

From the New York Times:

“The episode, which prompted extensive news media coverage in Canada, also cast a spotlight on seal-serving chefs like Mr. Lenglet. With the attention has come an increase in orders for Mr. Lenglet’s seal dishes, but also death threats, in the form of e-mail messages from Europe, where seal hunting protests have been most intense.”

Yikes!

Mr. Lenglet is the owner of Canadian restaurant Au Cinquième Péché in Montreal.

Obama Not The First President To Make Dog Mistake

The White House Debuts The Obamas New Dog Bo, A Portuguese Water Dog

After Barack Obama and the family got a dog that was not rescued from a shelter, there was much outcry from animal lovers everywhere.

But Barack isn’t the first president to make a pet faux paw (hahaha) in the spotlight.

During his time in the Oval Office, Lyndon B. Johnson had a beagle dog that he tried coaxing into standing on its hind legs for the press cameras.

Doggie wasn’t into it that day, so Johnson pulled on the dog’s ears and forced it to stand upright.

Public outrage occurred and Lyndon’s response wasn’t exactly the best damage control you can purchase.

A 1964 Time magazine article  reported that in London, the chairman of the League Against Cruel Sports stated, “If somebody picked you up by the ears, you’d yelp too. This is a most extraordinary way to treat a dog.”

Although he apologized for the incident, he admitted to pulling the dog’s ears since it was a puppy and added the beagle, “seemed to like it.”

All this wonderful history was recently stated on Animal Planet’s Dogs 101 and you can currently vote for your favorite first pup online!

Dennis Kucinich Message For Vegan Earth Day (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 in Politicians, Videos.

Dennis Kucinich delivered a televised message to attendees at Vegan Earth Day on June 21st at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California.

Kucinich used to suffer from Crohn’s disease, which he says, along with Chinese medicine, a vegan diet has cure him of.

Heck, if you think a vegan diet nixes that inflammatory disease of the intestines, a Japanese study suggested even a semi-vegetarian dieter can reap the benefits.

“I just want to tell you that for health reasons, for compassion for animals, there are many reasons that people can make that change. And also for helping to save the planet. There are as many reasons why a person may be a vegan as there are vegans, I suppose. But for me it’s been one of the most important decisions in my life. It’s enabled me to have increased clarity and vitality, and its given me a joy of life that I can’t say that I really had when I had another diet that was weighing me down physically and spiritually.”

Royals Attend Christmas Day Service At Sandringham

Today is Prince William’s birthday.

You may or may not care, depending on your fan meter, but you should know that his grandma wants to make the Royal Palace a little more green.

After meeting with First Lady Michelle Obama, where some scandalous touching took place, The Queen and Mrs. O hit it off. Queen Elizabeth has decided to follow her friend’s latest trend and plant organic vegetables in a 40 acre lot in the back of the Palace.

The garden will have runner beans, leeks, beetroot, and an endangered variety of climbing French beans called Blue Queen.

This will be the first time since World War II that plants have been grown at the Palace.

Mrs. Obama recently broke ground for the White House garden and last week invited local children to harvest and eat lettuce and snap peas.

As part of the launch to promote vegetarianism in South America, the granddaughter of the late Argentine revolutionary idol Ernesto “Che” Guevara, Lydia Guevara, will star in a PETA ad in October.

Lydia is a vegetarian who will be photographed with her grandfather’s trademark beret lined with carrots instead of bullets.

The slogan for the ad will be, “Join the Vegetarian Revolution.”

“PETA’s fight for animals was one of the reasons why I went vegetarian,” Lydia told the Spanish news agency Efe.

“Moreover, this lifestyle has become a true revolution that is attracting more people and is an alternative that is healthier for the planet and for humankind.”

Speaking of attractive, how about the arms on Lydia? So sleek and toned, she gives the diet a good name and Michelle Obama’s “arms of steel” a run for their money.

PETA Swats Fly Swatting Barack Obama

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, June 18th, 2009 in Politicians, Videos.

Eating burgers in public, killing flies, darn it, Mr. President, what has gotten into you?

Barack Obama is under fire again from the animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for swatting at and…gasp… killing a fly during an interview.

After hearing of the murder, PETA responded with the statement, “He isn’t the Buddha, he’s a human being and human beings have a long way to go before they think before they act.”

Some supporters of PETA are even laughing at this response and saying, in more or less words, “Give me a break!”

One commenter on TMZ.com said, “I’m a PETA supporter and I always stand up for what they do because in most cases, they do it out of caring for animals. But this makes me feel embarrassed.”

PETA has issued another statement, further explaining their stance.

“When the media began contacting us in droves for a statement, we obliged, simply by saying that the president isn’t the Buddha and shouldn’t be expected to do everything right—if not for that, we would not have brought it up. It’s the media who are making a big deal about the fly swat—not PETA. However, we took the opportunity, when asked, to point out that we do offer lots of ways in which to control insects of all kinds without harming them, including the humane bug catcher we sent President Obama. There is even a chapter in PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk’s book Making Kind Choices about how to rid your home of “uninvited guests.”
