Dennis Kucinich

“I’m a vegan. I kind of am hungry all the time.”

–Vegan congressman Dennis Kucinich, jokingly while discussing the subject of a hunger strike by U.S. postal workers who oppose proposed cuts in service.

Several parts of legislation have been counter-proposed in order to save the service, including changes to the way retirement services are funded and efforts to prevent closings in the next decade. Although he supports the workers who have pledged to go on strike for the next several days in D.C., Kucinich says he can’t give up his spaghetti and “wheat” balls and vegan muffins for it himself.

“I felt like I need to heal my body, so I would just fast and eat no meat, no dairy. I’ve never been a fan of meat, dairy and sugar. And when I developed diabetes last year I said, ‘Oh OK, I’m not going to be here long. A change is coming.’ So I started getting my mindset, then I started the fasting.”

“Before PETA was around, you know, you could f-ck with animals any way, anybody, anytime, anywhere, and now you can’t. That’s a pretty big change in the world. That’s a big achievement. … Animals will not be ignored. They’re the Glenn Close of species.”

“This movement away from eating animals and toward plant-based foods is on fire. It’s building momentum by the day. This is a profound shift, and I believe that the culture is embracing the ‘V’ word. Whereas before, it used to refer to hippies and a radical grass-roots movement. Now it’s hip.”

“I run hundred-mile races. I eat only plants and vegetables. Each of those sentences might shock some people. Read together, they might shock a whole lot of people.”

Scott Jurek, in a column at the Huffington Post. What’s even more “shocking” is this ultra marathoner’s former eating habits, as he claims his nickname “Grill Master” wasn’t given to him for smoking veggies.

“My father was a farmer. He taught me a lot. He was a good business man, ran a great farm. He refused to plant GMO seeds (genetically modified). But the neighboring farmer did, and his seeds blew into our farm. Dad sued and lost his farm after an expensive lawsuit with the biggest GMO manufacturing company. They were crooks.”

Chace Crawford‘s character Cole, in the film Peace, Love and Misunderstanding. Cole is a butcher dating a vegetarian who is disgusted that he “dismembers animals for a living.” Cole thinks he can make up for the loss of his father’s farm by butchering local meat and supporting local farmers, a move that softens even his vegetarian girlfriend’s heart (Elizabeth Olsen).

Sometimes truth is more of a pain to organic farmers than fiction. Planting crops beside a conventional farm that uses GMOS can and does cause contamination, risking the organic farmer’s certification and livelihood.

Meatless Mouthful–Roberto Martin On Making Meatless Work

Vegan Cooking for Carnivores

“The whole idea is baby steps. Try one dish a week. If it’s a big hit, throw it in the rotation, and then do another dish on Monday so then Monday is meatless, but Thursday is red beans and rice. What I love hearing is “My husband is a card-carrying carnivore, but I made him this dish from your book and he loved it so much he took leftovers to work.” When I hear that a dish is going to become someone’s staple, that’s just the coolest thing.”

Roberto Martin, author of Vegan Cooking for Carnivores and personal chef to Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi.
