Bette Midler's New York Restoration Project 8th Annual Spring Picnic

Bette Midler‘s New York Restoration Project (NYRP) was set to open the Target Bronx Community Garden today.

The NYRP is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing and revitalizing parks, community gardens and public space in New York City.

The Target Bronx Community Garden connects the already existing Anderson Community Garden with the adjoining Woodycrest Community Garden to create an even bigger multi-use space.

“Once again we are thrilled with the work that Target and Sean Conway have done to make this garden a vital part of the neighborhood,” said Bette Midler, Founder of NYRP. “We applaud the ongoing commitment that Target has to underserved communities. Like NYRP, they recognize that each time they help create a beautiful oasis in a neighborhood, they invest in the future of the whole city.”

From Looktothestars.org:

Combining two adjacent properties provided the unique opportunity to create one large multi-functional open space not often found in urban neighborhoods. From the entrance at Woodycrest Avenue, garden visitors will pass through a small grove of trees which commemorate the lives of those lost in a tragic neighborhood fire in 2007. Next visitors will enter into a large open area which contains a large grass space for celebrations and gatherings, an outdoor kitchen where visitors can prepare meals al fresco, an elevated wooden sundeck, newly planted fruit trees and a berry patch, as well as raised open plots for community vegetable gardening. A third feature of the garden is the renovated rock outcropping which highlights the rugged natural beauty of this Bronx neighborhood. The elevated slope faces the community’s public elementary school on Anderson Avenue and will provide a welcoming invitation for neighborhood children to explore the outdoors in their own back yard.

Green space brightens any neighborhood and encourages people to get out and get healthy.

Hats off to Bette and the NYRP!

Michelle Obama Vegetable Garden Tour (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, September 5th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Gardening, Politicians, Videos.

First Lady Michelle Obama gives a tour of the White House vegetable garden while offering some commentary on what led to her decision to create it.

Like most moms, Mrs. Obama wanted the fam to eat healthier, but found time constraints got in the way.

The garden is just one of the many ways Michelle found time to improve the Obamas diet, including “adding more fruits and vegetables,” sitting down with the family to enjoy a meal “a couple of times a week”, eating out a “little bit less,” and “eliminating processed and sugary foods.”

Michelle Obama Organic Garden Not So Organic After All

First Lady Michelle Obama Holds Food And Nutrition Event In WH Garden

When First Lady Michelle Obama broke ground for her organic garden on the South Lawn of the White House, everyone with an interest in natural, sustainable food choices cheered.

But if it seems too good to be true, it probably is and recent news has revealed the garden of organic Eden is tainted with non-organic sludge.

According to the Daily Finance, the National Park Service tested the soil in the vegetable patch and found “highly elevated levels of lead” due to sewage used as fertilizer.

And just who is to blame for the contaminated fertilizer?

Democrats would like to blame a Republican conspiracy, but the perpetrators were none other than Bill and Hillary Clinton!

When the Clintons inhabited 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, their gardening team used sewage sludge for fertilizer.

And since the sewage sludge has seeped into the ground of Michelle’s garden, it cannot truly be certified with organic status.

But local sewage is still better than imported.

Justin Timberlake and Guy Ritchie visit the Punch Bowl pub in London, UK

If you thought your homeowners’ association was strict, listen to plight of Guy Ritchie.

Guy has to get permission just to grow some fruits and vegetables on his property! It’s all part of a plan to green the estate he and Madonna once shared to make it more efficient.

Because of the historical significance of Ashcombe House in Wiltshire, England, he’ll need clearance to build a greenhouse and vegetable plots.

The planning application, according to Starpluse.com, reads as following:

“In the estate’s prime when it was painted in the 18th Century, it was surrounded by extensive gardens including major vegetable gardens. In recent years, all productive vegetable gardens have been lost. The gardens that remain are formal or semi-formal flower gardens.”

“It is proposed to try to make Ashcombe House self-sufficient. The part-walled gardens leading from the back door to the staff building will be turned over to vegetables and given a row of greenhouses to produce vines, fruit, early vegetables and seedlings… Produce from the greenhouses will be used on the estate, all part of an effort to make the estate more self-sufficient and sustainable.”

Sure hope Guy gets his application approved. Home grown produce is the least he can do to make up for the forced ham diet he puts the children on at Christmas.

Royals Attend Christmas Day Service At Sandringham

Today is Prince William’s birthday.

You may or may not care, depending on your fan meter, but you should know that his grandma wants to make the Royal Palace a little more green.

After meeting with First Lady Michelle Obama, where some scandalous touching took place, The Queen and Mrs. O hit it off. Queen Elizabeth has decided to follow her friend’s latest trend and plant organic vegetables in a 40 acre lot in the back of the Palace.

The garden will have runner beans, leeks, beetroot, and an endangered variety of climbing French beans called Blue Queen.

This will be the first time since World War II that plants have been grown at the Palace.

Mrs. Obama recently broke ground for the White House garden and last week invited local children to harvest and eat lettuce and snap peas.

Sienna Miller Presents Boss Orange Fragrance

Balthazar Getty begone!

Sienna Miller has a new love in her life and it’s gardening.

The 27-year old actress who has just finished filming GI Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, has been doing nothing but hoeing these days.

“It’s all about my veggies,” Sienna said. “Forget men, parties and jet-setting!”

“I have got a cottage and a garden at home in London and I’m growing vegetables for the first time in my life. I can’t wait to get back to my garden.”

The source article says Sienna is an “avowed vegetarian,” but we haven’t uncovered any other sources saying she is.

However, home grown veggies is certainly the start of a healthier body and sustainable planet. There’s no fuel involved in transporting those tomatoes to the kitchen!

Of course, we’d gladly take Sienna into the veg club. Do you think she’ll join us? Is she already a secret member?
