Kathy Freston Talks Skipping The Chicken

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 3rd, 2009 in Authors, Flexitarian.

Kathy Freston Celebrates Her New Book Quantum Wellness

Author Kathy Freston, the lovely lady who inspired Oprah Winfrey to do 21 days of vegan, recently blogged at the Huffington Post on the statistics of the effects going vegetarian has on the environment.

Fun facts to take with you to the party tonight:

If everyone went vegetarian just for one day, the U.S. would save:
100 billion gallons of water, enough to supply all the homes in New England for almost 4 months

1.5 billion pounds of crops otherwise fed to livestock, enough to feed the state of New Mexico for more than a year

70 million gallons of gas–enough to fuel all the cars of Canada and Mexico combined with plenty to spare

If everyone went vegetarian just for one day, the U.S. would prevent:
Greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 1.2 million tons of CO2, as much as produced by all of France

3 million tons of soil erosion and $70 million in resulting economic damages

But Kathy’s favorite statistic of all is this:

“According to Environmental Defense, if every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetarian foods instead, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off of U.S. roads.”

Vegetarians normally want others to refrain from meat altogether, forgetting the improvements that can occur when omnivores “meat” them halfway. A flexitarian diet not only holds bonuses to the dieter, but every living thing on the planet.

So what are you waiting for, potential flexitarians? Don’t be a chicken, put down that chicken!

Minority Whip Eric Cantor’s Part Time Vegetarian Ways

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 5th, 2009 in Flexitarian, Food & Drink, Politicians.

House Reps Comment On Economic Stimulus Bill

Minority Whip Eric Cantor has gained media attention for being the only Jewish Republican in the House of Representatives.

As a conservative Jew, he aims to maintain Kosher, which usually results in him abstaining from meat when dining out, where he can’t be certain of its status.

“I’m basically a vegetarian when I eat out,” Cantor said, according to Moment Magazine.

Yet another example of why flexitarianism finds its way into some people’s lives.

Like fellow representative Bill Galvano, Cantor once had a restaurant name a sandwich after him. It wasn’t vegetarian though, and unfortunately for Cantor, it associated him with jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who hosted a fundraiser for Cantor at the Kosher deli where the sandwich was created, Stacks.

Are you a part-time vegetarian? What are your reasons for flexing?

Lessmeatarian Mark Bittman Cares If Pigs Were Raised In Prison

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009 in Authors, Flexitarian.

Food writer and New York Times columnist Mark Bittman once said that “if pigs were raised in prison”, he “wouldn’t care as long as they tasted good.”

Ten years later, he tells what is seemingly a more caring storing about animal welfare.

“I don’t know if that means they’re subhuman or just different than humans, but there’s certainly no reason to mistreat them as badly as we do,” he told Josh Hardow and Michael Rau at the Library Journal.

“I guess if you’re going to kill them and eat them, you’re mistreating them to some extent anyway, but there are degrees of that.”

One has to question some of his motives for better animal welfare, as he added that if anything would affect the taste of meat, it would be the industry’s disregard for both animals and the environment through their mass production methods of bringing it to the supermarket.

But you must give him credit, as he’s including fewer and fewer meat meals in both his personal diet and his cookbooks.

While by no means a vegetarian (yet), in his newest book, Food Matters: A Guide to Conscious Eating with More Than 75 Recipes, he’s advocated switching to a more plant based diet.

It all started while he was revising one of his How To Cook Everything books (one of which is vegetarian) in 2005-2006. “If I’m eating less meat, and I think everybody should be eating less meat, maybe I don’t need 600 or 700 recipes including meat,” he said of his revisions.

While going all the way is ideal, part time vegetarians or flexitarians still have much to gain in terms of reducing food costs and improving health, not to mention lessening environmental impact and animal suffering.

And Bittman seems to agree.

“It was going to be called The Food Matters Cookbook, but if I could get people using the word “lessmeatarian,” I’d be ecstatic.

Paris Hilton’s Joke Vegetarian Birthday?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, February 18th, 2009 in Actresses, Flexitarian.

William Rast - Front Row - Fall 09 MBFW

Paris Hilton is known for many things, but being vegetarian is not one of them.

However, USA Today printed an article recently wishing her a Happy Birthday, and the article said Paris was a vegetarian.

We guess along with pescetarian and flexitarian, there are now beef and pork slider vegetarians, as that’s what she was seen eating not along ago.

Either vegetarians are becoming more like some churches, changing the rules faster than lightening in order to attract and retain more members or someone picked up some incorrect information.

We suspiciously think there was some Clint Eastwood vegan urban legendness to this mistake.

The website, ParisHiltonZone.com, claims that Paris became vegetarian after watching a video on animal cruelty provided to her by Heather Mills.

“From that point I’ve never worn fur and I never will.”I also haven’t eaten any meat since. I just survive on pasta and stuff like that. I was grossed out. It was disgusting.”

Maybe Paris was a veg at one time, however short lived. Or maybe she’s a flexitarian?

Giving credit where it’s due, mom Kathy Hilton did buy Paris a faux fur for Christmas instead of the real thing, so maybe Paris at least isn’t down with wearing something that came from one of her chihuahua Tinkerbell’s cousins.

Pauly Shore Not Vegetarian, But Whole Ribs Too Hardcore

The Cinema Society Hosts Screening Of

What’s with the wiki and other sites lately? Yes, we know they’re not law, but really, there’s been some wacky incorrect facts floating around.

First, we learned that Clint Eastwood is not only NOT a vegan, but had to have the definition of one explained to him, which resulted in a look of horror resembling a pet that knows it’s going to be spayed or neutered.

Now, we’re learning that Pauly Shore, actor best known for hosting MTV shows, is one of the falsely accused as well.

An excerpt from a recent interview with Memphis Flyer:

I heard you were a vegetarian. Is that true?

No. I love steak once in a while, just very rarely. I need my protein. I’ve got to stock up, you know.

So are you going to munch on some Memphis barbecue while you’re here?

Oh, I don’t know. I’m kind of sketchy on barbecue right now. Like, the whole ribs and shit, it’s kind of hardcore.

Hmmm. Since Pauly says he eats steak every once in awhile, but “whole ribs and shit” is hardcore, maybe he’s a flexitarian?

Update Wikipedia, update everyone. And keep your computers on standby ’cause you’ll probably be updating again soon.

Marla Maples Sticks To Mostly Vegetarian Diet, Excludes Dairy

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, December 14th, 2008 in Actresses, Flexitarian, Food & Drink.

Lupus LA

Marla Maples is one of those actresses that could play cougar like Demi Moore if she wanted to. Although she’s 45, she looks so hot she could tweak her birthdate and no one would bat an eyelash.

Donald Trump’s ex prefers to stay away from dairy, instead sipping on Ayurvedic teas. This flexitarian may make you a tad bit jealous. She doesn’t naturally crave healthy-she’s just finds it easy to fight to urge to eat junk.

“I have a lot of willpower,” she said.

10th Anniversary Benefit Supporting Road Recovery - New York

Tom Morello is just looking to be a part of the club, but he technically doesn’t meat (pun, pun, pun) all the criteria. The former Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave member who now does his solo thing as the musical act The Nightwatchman, says he’s been a vegetarian (flexitarian) on and off since college (he’s 44 now).

But currently he’s eating fish (so that makes him a pescatarian?) and gives into the lust that many men can’t turn down: Breast. Turkey breast, that is.

“IVE BEEN A VEGETARIAN ON AND OFF SINCE I ENTERED COLLEGE AND READ A BOOK CALLED “ANIMAL LIBERATION” BY AN AUTHOR WHO’S LAST NAME IS SINGER. IT CONVINCED ME OF THE IMMORALITY OF PARTICIPATING IN EATING MEAT THAT CAME THROUGH THE HORRIFIC FACTORY FARM SYSTEM. WHEN I FIRST BECAME A VEGETARIAN I HAD NEVER MET ANOTHER VEGETARIAN AND DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO DO IT SO IT BASICALLY LEFT ME WITH SALAD AND CHOCOLATE AND FRENCH FRIES AS THE ONLY THINGS LEFT ON THE MENU. I BECAME VERY SICK. KIND OF WENT BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN EATING MEAT AND NOT EATING MEAT OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT FEW YEARS. I STILL EAT FISH REGULARILY AND ON THANKSGIVING CAN BE LURED TO EAT TURKEY.”

What the heck? If he’s eating fish, he’s not technically vegetarian and if he’s eating turkey, he’s still not pescatarian. Wouldn’t it be easier for him to just say he doesn’t eat red meat and tries to reduce other meat consumption?

Oh well. Paul McCartney called for Meat Free Mondays in hopes of getting everyone to reduce the impact of meat consumption on the environment even if they didn’t give it up completely. Morello is making an effort, even if it’s not the greatest one.

Someone should really show him the Tofurky section of Whole Foods next month though.

Anne Hathaway’s A Quitter-Of Meat And Fish, That Is

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 in Actresses, Flexitarian.

The Cinema Society Hosts An After Party For

Anne Hathaway is probably one of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood and adored by both men and women. And let’s face it; she has that wholesome appearance to her-how much deviance could a diary writing Princess get into?

She’s been known for awhile as one of those flexitarians-people who have on again, off again relationships with eating meat. After the breakup of her convicted charity frauding ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri, she’s back on again with vegetarianism.

On a recent “David Letterman Show”, she said she’s quit smoking and eating meat and fish.

‘When I was quitting smoking I thought ‘Ok this is probably a good time to make some changes’, so I quit drinking and I quit meat and fish – and fun,'” she said.

She also mentioned that she is “vaguely vegan.”

We’re not sure how “vague” her veganess is, but maybe she’s the new female Tobey Maguire.
