Chrissie Hynde Joins PETA Protest Of KFC

Let’s face it, animal rights activists have to have thick skin.

When your motives are questioned, your tactics are ridiculed, and the cops are just waiting to shackle you at the slightest feeling the peaceful protest is turning ugly, it takes a lot of balls to get up routinely and stand up for creatures who cannot.

Not to mention those insane outfits!

From priests to fake bloody meat to animals to even getting downright naked, animal rights activists show no shame in dressing for the occasion to get the point across. Not a problem at all for vegan singer Chrissie Hynde.

“I don’t mind standing next to a guy dressed as a carrot chanting, ‘We’re not leaving ’til the cows come home,” Hynde told the Sunday Mail.

Or, standing next to a KFC chicken.

“If you’re willing to make a bit of a fool of yourself to make your point – that’s what you have to do.”

Whether it’s protesting KFC, McDonald’s or the mulesing industry, Chrissie has proven she never fails to pay her dues to the fools’ club.

There’s nothing like going to your hometown for a good vegan meal!

Erykah Badu and her family enjoyed some vegan grub at Spiral Diner in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas.

Badu was born and bred in Dallas and likes to stop by when she’s not touring.

It’s gotta be the food.

Silverstein’s Shane Told Tweeted about his love for Spiral Diner vegan brownies and ice cream.

In a world where LA and New York are the veg food meccas, it’s so cool to know the southern folk can get their vegan eatin’ on at a reputable place.

Erykah Badu: Can Vegans Kill Wasps?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 7th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Female Musicians, Female Singers.

Singer and musician Erykah Badu Tweeted about her dilemma on taking out one annoying wasp:

“i wonder should vegan ‘s kill aggressive wasps ? anyone have updated handbook? cause this mafuka gettin close to my head now..”

Jared Leto saved a spider from death row at a Proposition 2 party. Kristen Bell won’t tolerate you smashing a bug in front of her.

Our closest of smart-alec meat eating friends will always casually remind us that bugs and other insects are killed when harvesting plants.

Do you smack the flies at the picnic table or just shoo them away, hoping they’ll take up residence someplace else?

Perhaps the No-Kill Bugbuster might come in handy for Erykah and the rest of us.

Erykah Badu performs at the 40th New Orleans Jazz and Heritage FestivalAs a child, what snack did you love so much, you were willing to forgo an entire month of Saturday morning Smurfs?

Erykah Badu’s daughter, Puma, doesn’t seem to be that picky about her favorite munchie. As long as it’s vegan.

Erykah recently made a CelebrityTweet:

“puma keeps asking for vegan snack after snack …i oughta do like my mama and tell her , “.. gone . gone and eat em all then they’ll be gone.”

With all the unhealthy snacks kids ask for these days (chips, soda, cookies, oh my), Erykah should at least be thankful little Puma knows what good!

Of course, having a mom who grows her own herbs and is so big on holistic health doesn’t hurt.

Does your child have a favorite vegan snack you wouldn’t dare leave off the grocery list? Are you a big kid who has serious problems parting with your vegan comfort food?

Learn about what else Puma is begging for at Erykah’s celebrity Tweet at celebritytweet.com/fatbellybella/.

Kathy Freston blogged about the benefits of skipping chicken once a week on the environment and Vienna Teng is living that example.

During a recent interview with laist.com, the New York based pianist and singer-songwriter said she finds it hard to be a complete vegetarian (she says she loves Southern fried chicken too much), but agrees with the principles and tries to flex when possible.

“I don’t know LA all that well, but I do love this vegan restaurant, Real Food Daily, in Santa Monica. When I was recording Dreaming Through the Noise, I randomly decided that I was going to be a vegetarian. I basically agree with vegetarianism in principle but I don’t have the willpower to do it long-term. I’ve just been trying to do it in short stretches, and that was one of them. So when I was recording that album in Santa Monica, I probably went to RFD five times a week. I love their bacon cheeseburger!”

Here’s Vienna in her music video “Gravity,” from the album, Waking Hour.

Missy Higgins Fronts New PETA Anti-Fur Ad With Best Friend Izzy

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 17th, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Fur.

We admit we’re in love with Missy Higgins. But what’s not to love about her?

A vegan with a beautiful voice and equally talented song writing skills, she’s no stranger to animal issues either. Remember when she got cuddly with the piggy?

Now she’s cozying up with Izzy the dog, and both want to convey a serious message about animals and the fur industry.

“If you wouldn’t wear your dog, please don’t wear any fur,” reads the ad.

“The only difference between your “best friend” and animals killed for their fur is how we treat them. All animals suffer and feel pain. Please don’t wear any fur or fur trim.”

Vegetarian Times hosted their 2009 Dining Out Awards and nearly 700 readers voted for restaurants based in different regions of the U.S and several specialty veg restaurants like Most Eco-Fabulous and Totally RAWsome.

Chrissie Hynde’s Vegiterranean won “Most Promising Rookie.”

Several other restaurants made the cut, including The Chicago Diner for the midwest. If you recall, the diner is where Ellen DeGeneres went gaga over the vegan seitan hot wings and had some Fed Ex’d to her studios in California.

Peter Max’s fave, Candle 79, won the category for the northeast.
