Jorge Garcia Of “Lost” Goes Vegetarian For Animals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, November 5th, 2010 in Actors, Animal Issues, Food & Drink.

Jorge Garcia may have been a little confused by vegan marshmallows, but he’s completely understanding of why he won’t be eating turkey this Thanksgiving or living on an island that doesn’t offer plant-based sources of nutrition.

“I’ve been a vegetarian for about four months now,” Garcia said.

Learning how animals are raised in crowded conditions and slaughtered prompted the change.

“It’s about the animals,” Garcia added.

Someone send this man a vegan chocolate marshmallow turkey! He’ll totally understand it now.

Has it really been 50 years since Jane Goodall stepped on the grounds of Gombe, leading to decades of research and brilliant discovery of how some of the smartest animals on earth function and interact as a community?

The Jane Goodall Institute is celebrating the vegetarian, humanitarian and primate researcher’s life by publishing a followup to the 40th anniversary of the start of her work, Jane Goodall: 40 Years at Gombe.

Since 1999, the Gombe site has expanded its research efforts to humans as well, from AIDS research to improving sanitation, health care and education in the Tanzanian communities nearby and these are highlighted in Jane Goodall: 50 Years At  Gombe.

One of those humanitarian efforts is the TACARE program.

A 2004 video of Troy Gentry, of the country music band Montgomery Gentry, killing a bear and watching it bleed to death is circulating on animal welfare sites. The animal rights group SHark (Showing Animals Respect and Kindness) obtained it after a legal battle with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The tape was finally released under the Freedom of Information Act.

After shooting the bear located on a wildlife connection owned by Lee Greenly, Gentry can be heard in the background saying things like, “Wow! What an experience. This is awesome.”

In 2006, Gentry stuck a deal that resulted in a fine of $15,000 and three months of probation, in addition to being forced to hand over the stuffed bear and the bow used to kill him to authorities in exchange for avoiding more serious charges. The owner of the wildlife land also was charged. As with many videos showing animals dying, these aren’t easy to watch.

More video after the jump.

Alicia Silverstone On Organic Dairy Pitfalls

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Farming, Food & Drink.

Alicia Silverstone has blogged about the truth behind the dairy industry, even farms labeled “organic” and what it means to millions of dairy cows in the world.

Organic dairy requirements basically require the farmer comply with the following rules:

* All feed must be organic
* Animals must have unrestricted access to pasture
* No antibiotics or hormones are allowed, with the exception that sick animals must be treated as needed and removed from the herd

But, as Silverstone points out, organic does not necessarily mean animals are treated more humanely and ultimately every cow that becomes depleted of the ability to produce milk is sent to slaughter.

Michelle Rodriguez Postpones Sea Shepherd Tour (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Videos.

Michelle Rodriguez has postponed her work with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society because she wants to spend more time in the ocean and her filming schedule now is preventing that. “I have to go work. I have to go make some money — because I want to do three months,” Rodriguez says in this video. “I don’t want to go for a month and sit around and look cute.” The LOST and Avatar actress discusses how she grew up in an animal-loving vegetarian family and has kind words to say about Sea Shepherd Captain Paul Watson. “I love Paul. I’ve heard about him since the Green Peace days. He’s been an activist for many, many years. I guess I’ve just always been interested in learning from him…I gotta lot to learn from the guy.” Rodriguez’s lesson will be put on hold until next year as well as fans’ opportunity to watch her in action. Watch the video below for Rodriguez’s wish for all dolphin and whale hunters. (more…)

Pink Stabs Matador For Bulls In “Raise Your Glass” Video

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Female Singers, Videos.

Pink fights back for a bull in this video for her song, “Raise Your Glass.”

The video, which also highlights the issues of bullying, same-sex marriage and middle-class issues, features the vegetarian singer stepping in front of a bull and stabbing the matador.

Pink frequently speaks out against animals in the entertainment industry and the use of fur for fashion.

Unfortunately, a bull fighting ban created in Spain’s Catalonia region is already being challenged by an appeal to the Constitutional Court by the Popular Party. The ban is supposed to take effect in 2012. On a positive note, the ban has stimulated animal rights activists in France to work to get a similar measure passed there, where the sport is especially popular in the Southern region.
