Quantcast Vegetarian StarTroy Gentry Bear Shooting Video Released After SHark Legal Battle (Videos)

A 2004 video of Troy Gentry, of the country music band Montgomery Gentry, killing a bear and watching it bleed to death is circulating on animal welfare sites. The animal rights group SHark (Showing Animals Respect and Kindness) obtained it after a legal battle with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The tape was finally released under the Freedom of Information Act.

After shooting the bear located on a wildlife connection owned by Lee Greenly, Gentry can be heard in the background saying things like, “Wow! What an experience. This is awesome.”

In 2006, Gentry stuck a deal that resulted in a fine of $15,000 and three months of probation, in addition to being forced to hand over the stuffed bear and the bow used to kill him to authorities in exchange for avoiding more serious charges. The owner of the wildlife land also was charged. As with many videos showing animals dying, these aren’t easy to watch.

More video after the jump.

The Freedom of Information Act, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966, allows for partial or full disclosure of unreleased information controlled by the U.S. government. Animal rights groups have relied on this, along with similar legislation such as the State Open Record Laws, to obtain information on events that involve potentially problematic animal welfare situations, such as research laboratories.
