Johnny Weir‘s book, Welcome To My World, is set for release next week. People Magazine has published an excerpt along with photographs of the Olympic figure skater.

The book represents his official coming out but if gay vegetarian and animal rights activists see the People photo shoot, they might suggest he go back in–at least for a wardrobe change.

Kathy Freston is at it again!

The woman who’s written best selling books like Quantum Wellness Cleanse and convinced Oprah Winfrey to try a vegan diet is set to release another title in February, Veganist: Lose Weight, Get Healthy, Change The World.

What exactly is a veganist? Freston has started a blog for the book on her website, where she explains the term.

“Someone who moves toward eating a plant based diet so that they are as physically healthy as they can be, environmentally friendly, and a kind and thoughtful human being. And it’s not about being pure or strict; it’s about being informed and having fun while living according to values like kindness and thoughtfulness. Truly, I believe in progress, not perfection!”

Ewan McGregor is rumored to play Paul Watson in an upcoming film on the anti-whaling activist’s life, “Ocean Warrior: The Paul Watson Story.”

McGregor will portray Watson’s life during his earlier days of activism with Greenpeace and starting the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

Watson seems pleased with the film’s producer’s choice for him, as he wrote about it on a site about enviornmentalism.

“I think he will do a good job, although I would love to see long time Sea Shepherd supporter Christian Bale take the part. As for a leading lady my favourite actress has always been Sophie Marceau, but the choice is not mine unfortunately.”

Biffle has published a NASCAR Pets calendar featuring drivers like Biffle, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Tony Stewart with their non-human family members. Proceeds go to a variety of animal welfare organizations, such as spay and neuter clinics, the Humane Society and no-kill shelters.

The calendar sells for $13.99 and is available from Biffle’s Foundation site.

Betty Crocker Food Editor Makes Vegan Sugar Cookies

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, January 6th, 2011 in Food & Drink, Recipes.

Last month, Betty Crocker Facebook fans picked alternative diets that included vegan and gluten-free cooking as a top holiday trend.

Kristen Olson, Food Editor of the Betty Crocker Test Kitchen, is riding the wave Betty Crocker fans are on and has provided a recipe for vegan sugar cookies.

Soymilk replaces dairy milk and vegan margarine gives the same buttery taste and texture of the real thing. You may have heard of commercially produced egg substitutes, but did you know 2 tablespoons of cornstarch accomplish the same purpose?

Grab the recipe for Betty Crocker’s Sugar Cookies. Interested in more vegan Betty Crocker recipes? Maybe you should meet the Shannons.

Prince William Kate Middleton Marriage Nixes Horse Drawn Carriage

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, January 6th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Couples.

46565, NORTHLEACH, GLOUCESTERSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM - Tuesday November 16 2010. FILE PICTURE DATED Saturday October 23 2010. Prince William and Kate Middleton are engaged and will marry in 2011, Clarence House announced today. The announcement came after speculation reached fever pitch following a visit by Kate's parents to the Queen's Scottish estate last month. The invitation was seen as a clear sign that the couple were poised to announce they were marrying. They have been together for eight years and have recently been spending much of their time in north Wales where William is a search and rescue pilot. Their wedding, scheduled for 2011, will be the biggest royal event since the wedding of William's mother and father. Prince William and Kate Middleton are breaking a long tradition in royal weddings that some are speculating has something to do with influence of animal rights groups.

According to Hello Magazine, Kate will travel by car to the ceremony instead of the traditional horse-drawn carriage. Royal brides have arrived via Glass Coach since the early 1900s.

The Telegraph has noted this could also be for security reasons, but it suggests animal welfare could have played a part in the decision.

What are your thoughts?

Is the Royal Family making up for the fur hat the Queen wore during this past Christmas services?

"Skinny Bitch: Ultimate Everyday Cookbook"

“People want to know what I’m using. If I’m not hard core I’ll get my ass handed to me on a silver platter for that. So I do stay very true to the vegan code of ethics. But I’m not a judgmental person about that because I feel that it is a very difficult challenge anyway. When you’re overhauling what you’re using on your body and what you’re eating it can be exhausting. People do the best they can. Everything is a process, and if you’re okay with having some beeswax in your products, then that works for you. I’m not Judgey McJudge. I like to give people alternatives. I’m not the vegan police.”

Kim Barnouin, author and chef on the different  levels of veganism. Bill Clinton eats the occasional fish. Some may still eat honey or use beeswax. But with the list of everything that’s derived from or uses animal products, can any vegan point the finger?
