Mark Bittman

“We need to be addressing the ratio of animal products, processed foods and outright junk we eat compared with plants. It’s pretty simple: Each of us should examine our diet and adjust it accordingly. Ideally, we’d get 90 percent of our calories from plants, and the rest from everything else. Many of us have that ratio completely reversed. It’s just a matter of moving in the right direction.”

Mark Bittman, author and promoter of his “vegan until 6” philosophy, where he doesn’t consume any animal products until after 6 PM. Of course, getting 100% of your calories from plants wouldn’t be bad either.

Donna Karan Rabbit Fur Return Prompts PETA Protest

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 19th, 2010 in Fur, Videos.

Donna Karan is making herself known as the pendulum that can’t stop swinging in the fashion world. She used fur in previous clothing collections and after pressure from animal rights groups like PETA, agreed to remove it from her 2009 line.

However, she’s back again with designs that incorporate rabbit fur, so PETA used the opportunity to protest outside the location of a fundraiser Karan hosted with Michelle Obama, who won’t be wearing any items from the collection. Dan Matthews, senior VP of PETA was quoted by The Gothamist as saying, “We think Donna Karan should take a fashion tip from the first lady, who has officially announced that she is fur-free.”

Foods Not Bombs founder Keith McHenry says the movement was founded with a, “commitment to nonviolence, free unrestricted access to vegetarian food, and an honest attempt to make decisions as a group without hierarchy.”

Ultimately, this translates into Food Not Bombs groups across the globe providing food to those in need during adverse times, such as the Hurricane Katrina tragedy, illustrated in the video above. Who would have thought that providing vegan meals to the hungry would generate so much discontent from authorities? McHenry has been the subject of law enforcement investigations and the group currently has a lawsuit pending before the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta defending their right to free expression from arrests that occurred during a food distribution event in Florida. So why has Food Not Bombs persevered? In an interview with Planet Green, McHenry explains.

Actress Emma Stone had Paul McCartney design a matching tattoo for her and her mother to celebrate her mother’s recovery from breast cancer.

While she and Woody Harrelson were at McCartney’s home dining on veggie burgers, Stone asked McCartney to draw a tiny Blackbird, symbolizing the famous McCartney song that’s a favorite by both Emma and her mother.

The Easy A actress, who described the veggie burgers as “so good,” recently appeared on The Late Show and told David Letterman the decision to decorate her body was the first–and probably the last.

“We’ve never gotten tattoos before and probably never will again. Two years ago tomorrow she got diagnosed with breast cancer, and she’s out of the woods now, which is amazing. I wrote a letter to Paul McCartney asking him if he would draw two little bird feet – because he wrote the song – and yesterday he sent them to me.”

Just a reminder that continuing to eat those veggie burgers and soy products, as opposed to animal fat laden real ones, may one day spur your recovery from breast cancer. A study recently published in the Canadian Medical Journal found women who suffered from hormone sensitive cancers and were post-menopausal had a significantly lower risk of breast cancer recurrence if they consumed lots of soy isoflavones.

The clip of Stone with Letterman can be viewed below.
