Ethan Hawke Formulates Blood For Vegetarian Vampires

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 in Actors, Film & TV.

Premiere Of Lionsgate's Daybreakers

In the film Daybreakers, Ethan Hawke plays a scientist who needs to formulate artificial blood to nourish the vampires after their prey of human population dwindles.

OMG. Are these the real vegetarian vampires?

Hawke speaks to the Huffington Post about his character’s work, and sounds as if he’s trying to create the liquid version of test tube meat.

When asked if he thought of his character as vegetarian, Hawke answered, “I did. I thought of him as a person who worked for PETA who got forced into trying to help the slaughterhouse.”

Hey, if it saves the (human) animals, it’s worth the research efforts, right?

Now let’s calculate the carbon footprint of raising faux human versus manufacturing imitation blood.

Hope For Haiti Now: A Global Benefit For Earthquake Relief held in Los Angeles

Ellen DeGeneres went on a mission to give up processed sugar to gain energy (and maybe to ease that sexual tension between her and Simon on American Idol).

Giving up sugar doesn’t mean giving up sweetness, by the way.

Try alternatives like honey, agave nectar or rice syrup to sweet talk your way out of the white stuff.

Before you embark on any sugarless  journey, check with your doc first!

Leona Lewis Not Shy About Fur And Animal Rights

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Female Singers, Fur.

Leona Lewis attends the Brit Awards

Leona Lewis looks as sweet as agave syrup, but don’t let that fool you into thinking she can easily be pushed around, especially when it comes to her beliefs.

She told Smooth Radio, “That’s a big misconception. I think that a lot of people are like ‘she’s shy, she’s very timid’. Once people get to know me they know that that’s actually not true. I am very opinionated. I stand up for what I believe.”

Like not believing in selling herself out for fur, as she explained to Smooth Radio about her decision to turn down a opening a sale for a department store that sold fur.

“Yeah they did offer me money to open the sale but I said no because they stock fur. They’re one of the few places that still do it. I just think it’s so backwards, it’s very evil and cruel. I definitely stand up for what I believe in when it comes to animal rights.”

Her most recent act of activism was getting the officials at the BRIT awards to change the menu.

Keep it up, Leona!

Oliver thinks every child should learn to cook 10 meals before they graduate high school.

That’s real cooking, ladies and gentlemen. Emptying a dehydrated packet into dried ramen noodles doesn’t count.

If you have a high school senior heading off to college, start the 10 meal goal tonight by making Oliver’s Vegetable Jalfrezi Recipe.

Watch the clip to hear Jamie’s thoughts on what’s happened to milk–it doesn’t sound pretty.

Christina Pirello Top Healthy Ingredients

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 in Chefs, Food & Drink, Nutrition-Health-Fitness.

christina_pirello1

Looking for a crash course on what foods to load up on during your next grocery visit?

Then look no further than to Christina Pirello‘s Top 10 Ingredients for a Healthy Life at the Huffington Post.

Healthy oils, soy foods and lean proteins such as beans are included with Christina’s advice on why you should grab these while they’re hot (or cold, frozen, canned, bulk…)

Take a canned tomato, for instance. It’s may actually be better for you than served fresh.

“Unlike a lot of canned foods, canned tomatoes contain most of their nutrients. That means that you still benefit from most of the antioxidants like beta-carotene, vitamins C and E and the ever popular lycopene, essential to reproductive health, which is actually more efficiently absorbed by the body when the tomatoes are canned or cooked. All this adds up to a fruit that can help prevent heart disease and some cancers. Plus, the luscious tomato is high in potassium, but low in sodium, so it can be helpful in fighting high blood pressure and fluid retention.”

“Just be sure to buy canned tomatoes without salt. You can season them yourself. And skip the brands that add sugar. It’s not needed; tomatoes have an inherent sweetness that needs no enhancement. Do I need to tell you that organic tomatoes are best?”

Not really, but Christina definitely needs to tell you what the other top healthy ingredients are. Find out at the Huffington Post.

Amy Winehouse Cats Go To Feline Homeless Shelter

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Female Singers.

Amy Winehouse is escorted down the street after leaving the birthday party of Dionne Bromfield, Amy's Goddaughter, at the Shoreditch House

Not even 30 years old and she’s already a crazy cat lady.

Amy Winehouse has opened her home to several cats over the past months.

Now that she’s leaving her home in London, she’s decided to dump the kitties at the local shelter.

“Amy was pretty upset about it because she loved them dearly, but she had to give them up,” a source told The Sun. “They were climbing all over the place, breeding and generally getting out of control.”

But isn’t “breeding,” and “out of control” usually what takes place at the Winehouse residence?

Thumbs up for Amy making the decision to invite animals into her life.

Thumbs down for not realizing the amount of time required to care for one, let alone multiple cats.

Thumbs up for taking the animals to the shelter instead of letting them run loose.

Thumbs…oh, never mind. Too much Amy Winehouse analyzing and you’ll have yourself in rehab.

Hopefully, Amy at least got the animals spayed or neutered and they all will find loving homes.

Cause there’s just not enough room for all of them in that beehive.
