Jane Goodall–Going Green Starts With The Individual

The 2009 Women's Conference - Day 2 - Long Beach, California

If everyone did their job, there’d be no need for managers, right?

Vegetarian, conservationist and chimpanzee expert Jane Goodall thinks getting the world to live greener starts with yourself, whether you’re preaching to friends and family or not.

In an interview with the Harvard Crimson, Goodall emphasizes that some people will respond to arguments, but most importantly, they’ll all be watching how you live.

“You really have to start with yourself and then whether or not you reach out to others really depends on whether or not you’re the right person to do it,” Goodall said. “Some people are really good at arguing, and that doesn’t really change peoples opinions. But if you can get into their hearts, that’s what’s so important. Make people think about this question: if we’re the most intellectual animals that have ever walked on this planet, which we are, why are we destroying our only home? I think we’ve lost wisdom, the kind of wisdom where people say, “How will this decision affect people generations ahead?” Now we make decisions based on, “How will it help me now or in next year’s shareholders meeting or next year’s political campaign?””

One way Goodall helps others make a personal difference is through her Roots and Shoots campaign, an international environmental and humanitarian program for youth, with projects focused on improving the lives of people, animals and the environment.

Adolescents participate in activities like cleaning up parks, planting in gardens and volunteering at animal shelters.

Christina Aguilera Rocks Curlers To The Oprah Set!

Dr. Oz and Real Age expert Dr. Michael Roizen tackle the question of raw versus cooked in a piece of advice to a reader who wants to know if there are any benefits to eating raw and drinking distilled water.

The doctors are cool with raw, but emphasize that it’s not necessary and sometimes more beneficial if you eat vegetables cooked.

For example, steaming tomatoes brings out the lycopene, an important nutrient in fighting heart disease.

And steaming carrots and broccoli make the cancer fighting carotenoids easier to be absorb by the body.

Steamed vegetables also soak up bile, so the liver has to make more, which helps you get rid of LDL or “bad” cholesterol.

“But the main reason we don’t like extreme diets is that they deprive you of important nutrients,” the doctors answer. “If you’re eating only raw veggies, you’re almost certainly going to run short of protein and vitamin B-12, fast.”

And save the distilled water for ironing clothes.

“As for drinking distilled water, well, it’s usually made by boiling. While that strips out impurities, it also strips out minerals like calcium. Our opinion: Fuggedaboutit, unless you’re drinking four more glasses of non-distilled water a day. Then just do it if you like the taste better.”

Mafia Wars

Mafia Wars

After receiving a request from PETA to remove a chained pit bull used as a weapon from the latest edition of Mafia Wars, Zynga president and CEO has complied with the request.

Mark Pincus will be getting his vegan chocolates from the animal rights organization very soon.

“Mafia Wars is obviously only a game, but the suffering endured by thousands of pit bulls who are treated as if they were nothing more than burglar alarms or fighting machines is very real,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman in a press release. “By removing Mafia Wars’ virtual pit bull, Zynga is no longer perpetuating the mindset that it’s acceptable to chain, neglect, and abuse real dogs.”

We just knew it was impossible for a guy who used to bring his bulldog to work to keep this horrible feature in the game.

And the employee who’s idea it was to put it in there?

No free massages at work for him for a month.

Thomas Keller Reps Respond To Foie Gras Protest Plans

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 7th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Chefs, Food & Drink.

Grand Opening Of Thomas Keller's Bouchon In Beverly Hills

After learning the plans of animal rights activists to protest outside his restaurants for selling foie gras, Thomas Keller issued a statement through his representatives.

From Grubstreet:

“The Thomas Keller Restaurant Group consistently endeavors to make extremely conscientious decisions regarding all suppliers with whom we work, and our chefs have specifically selected to source from the most ethical purveyors possible. We will keep within full accordance of all legal mandates should the states of California and New York pass future legislation regarding Foie Gras.”

As long as they’re being stuffed to (literally) death and killed, it’s probably not “ethical” enough.

The protests are taking place this Saturday at Keller’s California and New York restaurants as part of a campaign organized by several groups, including Animal Protection & Rescue League, Orange County People for Animals, In Defense of Animals, and Compassion Over Killing.

Mark Bittman Shares Sushi Minus The Seafood Ideas

"Spain... On The Road Again" Television Series Launch

Mark Bittman is famous for his flexitarian approach to eating and in a recent column in the New York Times, Bittman shares with readers how to make sushi without the fish.

Sushi without the seafood is not only vegetarian friendly, but budget friendly and Bittman points this out in the article.

“Think about it: sushi without seafood, sushi without restaurants and sushi without spending $80 a person. It’s an appealing option,” he writes.

Vegetarians already know that nori seaweed strips make great wraps and although not every non seafood option Bittman gives is vegetarian, there is an abundance of vegetables and vegetarian protein to try like fried tofu, raw or seared tofu, avocado, mushrooms and eggplants.

Bittman says that when buying nori, look for sheets with darker colors and fewer holes.

And eat right away for a crispy sushi experience–as soon as nori touches moisture, it begins to soften.

A Starbucks drink is seen on a table in New York's Times Square

Update: An update to this post can be found here.

Coffee and cow lovers united when Starbucks announced their Frappuccinos could be made vegan.

Now, the coffee giant is offering a However You Want It Frappuccino, which allows the consumer to specify the strength of the coffee, type of milk and other syrups and topping.

Of particular interest to the vegans will be the Soy Strawberries & Creme Frappuccino(R) Blended Beverage, described as an “all-natural strawberry sauce, creme base, soy milk, blended with ice and topped with whipped cream.”

But don’t you need to remove the cream to make it completely non-dairy?

Or is this cream coming from the soy?

More investigation is needed, probably during the next trip to use Starbuck’s WiFi and purchase one of their special edition CDs they won’t stop playing over and over again during your four hour study sessions.

Green Day "American Idiot" Musical

Green Day "American Idiot" Musical

Who ever thought Billie Joe Armstrong would make it to Broadway?

The American Idiot musical portrays young adults trying to find their way through the world: one leaves to fight for his country, another escapes to the city, and another gets stuck in suburbia.

Seen here is a video of the cast singing Green Day’s “21 Guns.”

Sure hope that leopard attire on one cast member is fake, because only an American Idiot would still be wearing real fur.

Take a look, watch the video and decide for yourself.

Fur real?

Or (hopefully) fur fake.
