Charlotte Ross Shares Her Dreams For Animals–Better Farming, Adoption

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, September 30th, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Fashion.

Charlotte Ross was in attendance at PETA’s 30th anniversary gala, but the NYPD Blue actress supports several other animal rights and other organizations, including the Humane Society of the United States and the Jane Goodall Institute.

Ross shared with Celebrity Baby Scoop that her dreams are to have better conditions for farm animals and have more shelter animals adopted instead of euthanized.

“Whether you’re a vegetarian or not, is not the issue. My fight is for all animals to have a very basic and fundamental right which is to live a healthy and torture-free life. To let animals ‘live’ in crammed cages where they can’t move, turn around or feel the sun is inhumane. And, many facilities don’t put their very sick or dying animals out of their misery but, instead let them die a slow, painful death and then have the nerve to throw it on our dinner plates. These farming practices should be outlawed.”

"The Tofu Tollbooth"

"The Tofu Tollbooth"

Dar Williams is a singer-songwriter who collaborated with Elizabeth Zipern to create a one stop book filled with dining suggestions for the vegetarian traveler, The Tofu Tollbooth. The concept is great, plus the book stays true to being environmentally friendly as it’s printed with soy ink on recyclable paper.

“It’s a directory of natural food stores,” Williams told Windy City Times. “So, that’s the link; because I’m a traveler. And, actually, I’m a terrible cook. I mean, a really bad cook. So, it would be kind of funny if people ( laughs ) thought it was a cookbook. They probably imagine me in an Indian print skirt over a pot of lentils. I am so the grab-and-go kind of bad eater.”

Russell Brand

Russell Brand

Russell Brand has a new book out, Booky Wook 2: This Time It’s Personal, a follow up to the autobiography My Booky Wook, which described much of Brand’s trials of sex and drug addiction and rehab. Brand took to Twitter to pose for a lovely unoffiical promo photo, showing his love for veggie snacks too.

A description from Amazon says Booky Wook 2 is told from a more sober Brand and “ushers in an unforgettable and raucous ride through chat shows, tabloid scandals, and Hollywood, all the while detailing Brand’s search for the contentment that fame can’t quite grant.”

Speaking of drug-free, sobriety and rehab, Brand never had a “relapse” in vegetarianism, as he discussed in My Booky Wook.

Emily Deschanel‘s co-star on Bones’, David Boreanaz, was a guest at the ceremony and reception for the actress’ recent wedding. Boreanz said the food featured some lovely seitan imitating chicken, which lead to a hilarious discussion of vegan weddings (did she marry a man from Venus) and whether or not food was incorporated into the ceremony to make it vegan.

Deschanel managed to convince Boreanz to eat vegetarian at least once a week.

“A lot of the reason is the attitude that if you slip up, there is no use trying it anymore. Imagine applying that to anything else: truth telling or being kind to strangers. If every time we slipped up, we said, “I’m done trying,” then what would we be left with?”

–author Jonathan Safran Foer, when asked why people become ex-vegetarians.

John Salley Makes A Mean Root Beer With An Avocado Sandwich

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, September 30th, 2010 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

While we’re still waiting for John Salley‘s natural food line to come out, it’s still exciting to hear Spider Legs discuss his favorite meals he likes to whip up at home.

The NBA legend is a fan of vegan mayonnaise Vegenaise and enjoys smothering it on an avocado sandwich and washing the whole thing down with some homemade root beer.

“I do something like an avocado sandwich with Vegenaise, mustard, live sprouts, grape tomatoes and some toasted bread,” Salley told Tampa Bay. “I eat avocado almost every day. I may mix bananas, mangoes, papayas and blend it up.”

Moby At Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary Highlights (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, September 30th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Male Musicians, Male Singers, Videos.

A video on Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary features a talk with Moby, who recently performed an acoustic, benefit show on the grounds.

Moby says his favorite animals at the sanctuary are goats.

“They generally tend to have the most personality,” Moby said.

Growing up, some of Moby’s earliest memories were of him, pet rats, cats and dogs–all hanging around the bathtub. The turkey sitting next to him seems very interested in this story, but probably got a little offended that he wasn’t named a favorite.

For more information on the sanctuary, visit WoodstockSanctuary.org.
