It’s that time again to vote for your favorite vegetarian and vegan stuff in the 2009 VegNews Veggie Awards!

We invite all our fans to write us in for the favorite blog category.

The entrants already listed are based on last year’s votes, but if enough people write us in, we’ll appear as a voting choice!

Besides favorite blog, there are categories like best restaurant, favorite veg celebrity, favorite veg meat, and even the best tofu!

If you don’t have any favorites in any other category, you can skip all the other pages and go straight to the blog category to vote.

Best of all? Everyone who votes will be entered to win several prizes, including vegan ice cream and pizza kits, a tropical getaway in Key West that includes dinner at the lovely vegan restaurant Sublime, and vegan handbags from Matt & Nat.

Voting starts today and ends July 31, 2009 at midnight.

Winners will be featured in the November/December Holiday issue of VegNews.

We’ve touched on Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” before, for which he won the Doris Day Music Award at the Genesis Awards in 1996.

The song was never released in the United States, but was a chart topper in the UK, even beating out famed hits like “Thriller” and “Beat It.”

The video depicts various scenes of basically humankind destroying the Earth-from pollution to war and famine to animal abuse.

Seal slaughter is an assault on both animals and the environment and Jackson features a short clip of one being clubbed by a hunter around minute 3:25.

Thanks to activism, Canadian Seal slaughters were down by 200,000 in this year’s hunt and history was made when the European Union voted to ban the trade of seal products.  In the past, Europe has been a target market for Canadian seal products.

20th Century Fox Screening Of Fast Food Nation

Richard Linklater is an Academy award nominated film director and screen writer who’s credits include Fast Food Nation and School of Rock.

If you know Fast Food Nation, you know the story of the poor marketing director who, after discovering some good ol’ fecal matter in his company’s meat product, learns what other horrors come packaged in a “Value Meal.”

Linklater’s no fan of fast food, as he prefers “healthy mexican,” specifically, a restaurant in Austin, Texas called Mr. Natural.

“It’s this veggie Mexican food place, a healthy Mexican place, just about a mile on the East side on Cesar Chavez Avenue. It’s called Mr. Natural. It’s a healthy Mexican little buffet. It’s wonderful. It’s been there forever. It’s too good to be true. It’s a quick little buffet, you’re eating within like four minutes of when you walk in the door.”

Heading to Austin anytime soon? Mr. Natural’s menu offers vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, and wheat free dishes like Potato Flautas, Picadillo de Soya, Cabbage Rolls, Tofu a la Mexicana, and Tamales.

The World Music Awards - Show

So we’ve already learned the late Michael Jackson loved sweet potatoes.

Now, we’re finding out more favorite foods the vegetarian enjoyed.

Larry Banares, a Filipino American celebrity chef based in San Diego, has spilled the lard-free re-fried beans that Michael had a thing for Mexican food.

“One that really sticks in my mind was a kind of a Mexican dish,” Banares said. “He loved tofu and cheese enchiladas with the green tomatillo sauce. And we perfected that dish because it was one of Michael’s absolute favorites.”

You know the drill. Life’s short, so you ate your sweet potato pie dessert first. Now it’s time for lunch or dinner.

Here’s the recipe for the tofu enchiladas. Don’t forget your green sauce.

And the musical selection for the day is…Streetwalker.

What do big time stars like Ginnifer Goodwin, Audrey Tatou, Alicia Silverstone, Keira Knightley and Emmy Rossum all have in common?

They’ve had good work done by Los Angeles based celebrity makeup artist Kerry Malouf, who’ll be a regular contributor to beautynewsnyc.com.

Malouf is a vegetarian who uses beauty products not tested on animals and that contain natural and organic products whenever possible.

It’s a no brainer that vegan activists like Ginnifer Goodwin and Alicia Silverstone love an artist who practices good beauty ethos, but the fact Malouf’s CV includes stars who aren’t veg is incredible.

“I believe that true beauty comes from the inside out, so what you put inside your body reflects on the outside, with makeup and clothing enhancing the outside with color and fabrics making daily life a little more fun,” Malouf said.

Feeling good on the inside because no creatures were harmed in the making of your concealor will truly make your outward appearance shine.

Daryl Hannah, Ed Begley Jr. Have Fabulously Green Homes

Daryl Hannah - who was arrested and cautioned in West Virginia this week - at Andas in West Hollywood for 944 Magazines 10th anniversary party

Treehugger.com has compiled their list of celebrities with the best green homes and two vegetarian stars, Daryl Hannah and Ed Begley Jr. are on the list.

If you have the privilege of visiting Daryl, you might chill on her moss covered stone that doubles as a couch in her almost entirely solar powered home.

And if you think Daryl’s moss couch is wild, Ed Begley Jr. gets really crazy with a white picket fence made from recycled milk jugs!

Have lunch with Ed with food cooked from his solar powered oven which sits outdoors and be sure to check out his rain water barrels while (hopefully) someone else is doing the cooking.
