Carl Lewis Discusses Last Bratwurst Before Going Vegetarian

Carl Lewis participated in the Dow Live Earth Run for Water event this weekend and he took time to speak with the Saginaw News on why he changed his diet to a mostly vegan one.

We can all remember the last piece of flesh we ate before making the plunge into vegetarian, whether it was your favorite fast food burger, B.L.T. or homemade roast. Carl’s last piece of meat was a bratwurst before a track meet and he’s been doing it faux or no ever since.

“I met a guy who wrote a book about vegan diets. We ended up talking for like an hour, and he told me to set a date, and just do it, try it. This was June, so I set a date in July, and I was in Spain for a track meet, and I had a big old bratwurst the night before. I got on the plane the next day, flew home, and I was a vegan. I stayed vegan for a couple years and now mostly I’m a vegetarian.”

These days the former Olympic gold medalist keeps busy with his Fitforever foundation, a website filled with articles and community support to help people achieve and maintain fitness, regardless of age.

Carl Lewis, nine time Olympic gold medal champion and vegan, is running in the 6-kilometer Run for Water race in Atlanta, Georgia on April 18 to raise awareness for water scarcity.

The charity fits well into his vegan lifestyle, Lewis says, as clean water is just an important element of health as animal free food.

“I’ve always been someone who cared about and loved the environment,” Lewis told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “It was really kind of a perfect match. When I heard about the event, it was something that fits. … I’ve been around the world several times. I can understand the issue of water scarcity. I’ve always disliked plastic water bottles. This fits into my overall thoughts about that and being a vegan and having my foundation focus on health and fitness, this all fits into the message that I’m living.”

Lewis says that although there are challenges to being vegan when eating out, even a steakhouse can keep you vegetarian if you make the effort.

“Basically, when I’m home, I’m completely a vegan. When I’m out, I eat some things. I don’t stress it. If there’s a steakhouse around, it’s the greatest place for vegetarians. There’s always a salad bar, and you can always get a baked potato.”

Carl Lewis Among Olympic Vegetarian Stars

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, August 13th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports.

UT: Gibson Guitar And Entertainment Tonight Celebrity Hospitality Lodge Wednesday

We hope everyone is enjoying the Olympics. Or maybe you are just waiting for them to finish so all of your other television programs can return to normal. Whatever your personal case is, you have to at least enjoy our little history lesson on former Olympic athletes who were vegetarian and vegan.

There have been many Olympic athletes who didn’t use meat to get there, including sprinter Leroy Burrell, hurdler Edwin Moses, figure skater Charlene Wong, wrestler Chris Campbell, runner Paavo Nurmi, figure skater Surya Bonaly, race walker Debbie Lawrence, discus thrower Al Oerter, and sprinting champion Carl Lewis. Lewis won 10 Olympic medals in his career from 1979-1996, 9 of which were gold.

Lewis’ inspiration to become vegan was partially from a meet and greet with famous veggie doctor, Dr. John McDougall.

“The first was Jay Cordich, the Juice Man, whom I met at the Houston radio station where I worked in the early morning. He was there to talk about his juicer, which makes fresh juice from fruits and vegetables. He said that drinking at least sixteen ounces of freshly squeezed juice each day will increase a person’s energy, strengthen the immune system, and reduce the risk of disease. A few weeks later while doing publicity for a meet in Minneapolis, I met Dr. John McDougall, a medical doctor who teaches about the link between good nutrition and good health and was promoting his latest book. Dr. McDougall challenged me to make a commitment to eating a vegetarian diet and then to just do it.”
