Missy Higgins Likes Real Food Daily

Missy Higgins is an Australian born singer and songwriter who’s been inching her way into America’s CD players with her album The Sound of White and more recently, On A Clear Night.

She is a vegan, who agreed to cuddle with a pig because she loves animals so much. The last time we remember a singer holding a pig for the camera it was Tori Amos nursing one and…well, never mind.

Anyway, living in Los Angeles is great for Missy because she has the world of vegan food eateries in her backyard, include Real Food Daily. We checked out the menu: Better With Cheddar Nachos-melted cashew cheddar cheese with tofu sour cream, Tempeh Reuben, and Salisbury Seitan to name a few items.

It’s safe to say that this woman’s got both a great voice and great taste.

Emily Deschanel Likes Gardein From Whole Foods

2008 FOX UpFront - Arrivals

More food voyeurism. What do the vegetarian stars like to eat? We found what’s probably on the grocery lists of Chrissie Hynde, Constance Marie, Dennis Kucinich, Daryl Hannah, and Emily Deschanel every week.

In addition to vegetarian pot roast, our favorite Bones actress likes Gardein, a wheat protein product that she says you can only find at Whole Foods. “It’s very tasty,” she said.

Constance Marie is really into veggie hot dogs, Daryl Hannah tries to stay away from fake meats because of soy isolate, but Dennis Kucinich loves his Tofurky`kielbasa’ and the vegan Gardenburger.

Singer Chrissie Hynde is probably the least picky to please: “I will eat whatever I am offered, providing no animals have suffered.”

White House Chefs Taught Chelsea Clinton To Cook Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, September 14th, 2008 in Politicians.

Chelsea Clinton Campaigns For Her Mother In North Carolina

Most college students leave home with knowledge of how to boil ramen noodles, bake frozen pizzas, and maybe stack high their favorite sandwich. But most college students aren’t daughters of the President.

Before Chelsea Clinton went off to Standford, Hillary asked the White House Cooking Staff to teach her daughter how to prepare delicious vegan meals. Chelsea has been keeping pork off her fork since childhood. But this was more than just a weekend of “helpful hints.” Chelsea spent an entire 6 weeks learning the craft and upon completion, she received a Walter Scheib cooking school certificate.

Masslive.com has lots of juicy details given by Walter Scheib, who served as executive chef for the White House during both Clinton and Bush presidencies, including how Hillary Clinton was really into fennel and Laura Bush was “adamant about organic.”

Howard Stern And Beth Ostrosky Wedding

Relax and leave the food voyeurism to us. Thanks to NYMag, we were able to tell you what millionaire blogger Peter Rojas ate for an entire week and the fact that he screwed up a tofu curry scramble with too much lime.

Once again, we bring you all the details of vegan celebrity food life. Robin Quivers, Howard Stern’s sidekick,  lost 70 pounds following a vegan diet. You should check out her before and after pictures–wow. She gave a sampling of her weekly munching to NYMag. Here are just a few bites:

Saturday, April 5:
Grilled vegetables, among other things.”Sometimes, I may be out to dinner and have a little pasta with vegetables or a risotto. I’ve gotten chefs to make me a risotto with olive oil instead of butter and cheese and then putting in some vegetables.”

Sunday, April 6:
Fruit smoothies with berries and coconut water. “I have a Magic Bullet [blender] in my office, and I put in these nutritional powders containing wheat grass and alfalfa in my juices.”

Monday, April 7:
“I try to stay away from white flour, but every once in a while I’ll indulge myself. I love soft pretzels — especially Aunt Annie’s.”

Tuesday, April 8:
“I had them make a vegetarian gordita without the sour cream and cheese.”

For a bigger bite of what Robin ate, you’ll have to go to NYMag and read for yourself.

Vegetarian Victoria Beckham Wants Bangers On Menu

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 12th, 2008 in Actresses, Chefs, Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian.

Marc Jacobs - Spring 09 MBFW - Arrivals

Victoria Beckham may have made a pact with the devil. The carnivore devil, that is. Beckham, a vegetarian, is opening a restaurant in Los Angeles with celebrity chef, Hell’s kitchen, and Kitchen Nightmare’s Gordon Ramsay. Ramsay is not exactly known for his love of vegetarians and it doesn’t look like the menu will reflect anything different.

Ramsay told the Daily Mirror, “Yes, it is true that Victoria and I are setting up a restaurant in LA together. I’m really excited. She’s really keen to focus on a traditional English-style menu, like bangers and mash, fish and chips and such like.”

What the heck are bangers? We asked ourselves this question and did some digging. Bangers are sausages made from pork or beef with apple or tomato seasoning. Uh, no thanks. Mash, of course, being mashed potatoes. Not too bad. Any chance of getting a Morningstar Farms version of Bangers and Mash on the menu?

Add Andrew McMahon To List Of Stars Who Think Vegetarianism Is Tough

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 12th, 2008 in Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Coachella Music Festival - Day 2

A few days ago, you learned how Nellie Mckay thinks being a vegan is a pain in the ass. While she doesn’t speak for everyone, there are other musicians that agree it’s not always easy to eat well while on tour. Andrew McMahon of Jack’s Mannequin, and Something Corporate, both piano rock bands out of California, decided to go veg for his most recent tour. He admits he’s no food “saint.”

“It’s still a rock and roll tour, there’s an element of unhealthy living but I think truthfully like, especially considering what, you know that I got sick while I was in the middle of a tour, you know I try my best,” he said.

“We don’t finish a night and get plastered every other night, you know what I mean? But we’re not saints either. Actually I became a vegetarian during this tour, which is a hard battle to fight. But I try and go to the gym three times a week and work out every morning, push ups and sit ups and do my best to eat out. You’ll have a day where it’s pizza all day and then you’ll have a day like okay I’ve got to tailor it back. You just gotta, you learn to walk a line out here.”

No iBurger For Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 12th, 2008 in Business, Tech.

Apple Introduces New iPhone At Worldwide Developers Conference

All computer nerds (including us) are forever indebted to Steve Jobs for helping to start the wave of successful personal computers by co-founding Apple Inc.. Without him, we wouldn’t have an encyclopedia of igadgets or those hilarious commercials of PC trying to trap students with a pizza box to prevent them from buying a Mac.

Much ado about nothing took place a few weeks ago, over an obituary mistakenly published when in fact, Jobs was very much alive and well.  There had been internet speculations of his health and some said he was becoming too thin. He had a bout with pancreatic cancer in the past, and was reported to have been reluctant to try traditional treatments, due to his Buddhist and vegetarian beliefs. (Some sources say he calls himself a pescetarian.) He eventually chose to pursue mainstream medicine and was cured of the disease.

But Jobs has made health waves in the past. He’s the former CEO of Pixar Animation Studios and took the helm around the time when Disney chose not to renew it’s agreement with McDonald’s, allowing the fast food giant to put Disney characters as toys in Happy Meals. In a press conference, he was quoted as saying, “”there is value” (in fast-food tie-ins) “but there are also some concerns, as our society becomes more conscious of some of the implications of fast food.”

With the sedentary and junk food lifestyles becoming more common, those at office and computer jobs may be at higher risk of succumbing to them and all the associated health problems.  We think it’s fantastic that the alpha computer iNerd is all about promoting the healthy way of life.
