Chef Rick Moonen has long worked to educate about the dangers of overfishing and ocean conservation (while still cooking up fish in his restaurants) and told Eater while some people may not think of Las Vegas as being a heart of eco-friendly practices (think all that energy required for the lights on those strips), he encountered less resistance when preaching to chefs about removing certain seafood items from the menu.

“Las Vegas is closer to more organic farms than LA. True. And I’m not sure if this is timing or if it’s just a different mentality, but there’s more chef support—people actually making menu changes and making a movement towards being more sustainable on their menu—in Vegas than when I was in New York for twenty five years. True. The chefs sort of listened, but they weren’t motivated to take any action. You know, they’d sit there and listen to me and nod their heads but you look at their menu and: Chilean sea bass, red snapper, grouper, skate. I mean, what the? You don’t know why. I personally want to help to break the debauchering reputation of Las Vegas.”

Moonen’s restaurant, Mandalay Bay, isn’t the only sustainable outlet of Vegas, as Planet Green discusses. Ronald’s Donuts, for example,  is said to have a menu of almost 90% vegan donuts. If you’re the type that eats dessert before dinner, you should then swing by the Go Raw Cafe for some pizza, a wrap or drink from the juice bar.

Frankenburger

Frankenburger

The KFC Double Down and McGangburger have had their 15 minutes of fame. Now the Frankenburger is hoping to win the hearts (by literally stopping them) of people with it’s trio of McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger King food components.

Unlike other “killer” meat sandwich combos, the Frankenburger is not simply of piling of several patties of dead flesh onto a bun. Rather it takes the meat, cheese, vegetables, fries and other ingredients from several fast food meals to create the “perfect” burger. We are already salivating at a vegan version. Here is the formula for disaster, from Village Voice.

Moby interviews with KCRW on his co-edited book Gristle, veganism and zoonotic diseases.

“Almost every big global pandemic starts with confined animal production,” he said.

A more recent example of this is swine flu–the disease used to make its way through pigs on farms before it got smarter and infected humans.

The musician also touches on the benefits of a plant based diet for athletes, stating that carbohydrates and protein are easier to use than those found in meat.

Moby’s interview starts at minute 22:14, but there are several clips during this program that are relevant to vegetarians, including a segment on school lunches, polenta and a restaurant that only serves mac and cheese.

If you’ve ever attended a state or county fair, you may have felt left out after discovering all the selection of fried foods contained meat. Now, vegans can go downhill as well with fried cupcakes shown in this video.

Disturbingly delicious looking, this may be used as last resort to entice the otherwise animal product junk food addict to cross over to our side.

Mentioned in the clip is a scheduled appearance by environmentalist Julia Butterfly Hill on Saturday, June 12 at 11:30AM at the Schlafly Tap Room in St Louis, Missouri. Hill became famous for living in a 1,500 year old tree in the Redwood Forest and has written the book, “The Legacy of Luna.”

The event includes vegetarian and vegan lunch and cupcakes from Sweet Art.

No word on if they’ll be fried but don’t count on it.

Martha Stewart Eco Detergent Ranks Poor With Consumer Reports

Martha Stewart attends the Vanity Fair Party during the 9th Annual Tribeca Film Festival at the New York State Supreme Court in New York, New York on April 20, 2010 Fame Pictures, Inc

Sure, we love Martha Stewart, but will her new animal-friendly and eco-detergent get the acai stain out of our white jackets?

Tests conducted by Consumer Reports, unfortunately, say no.

After staining swatches with compounds such as wine, blood and grass, the group tested 50 different detergents for their ability to clean and remove spots in conventional and high efficient washing machines.

“In conventional top loaders, there was barely a difference between the swatches washed in Martha’s detergent and those washed in plain water. The results from high-efficiency washers were only slightly better.”

Big Brother‘s vegan housemate Yvette Martyn has a real big brother looking after her.

Gwyn Martyn, a stockbroker, is confident his little sister will get along just fine, despite her dietary restrictions.

“They often have small budgets for food and people don’t often like making separate dishes for vegetarians,” he said, “but she is happy eating pasta, so hopefully she will be okay.”

Pasta’s not the refined starch carbohydrate monster it was labeled by the anti-veggie villains like proponents of low carb and high meat diets. Enriched grain pasta is not only low in sodium, it’s a great source of protein for vegetarians and provides a fantastic energy boost with its complex carbohydrates that are released slowly over time.

Rachael Ray joined a bi-partisan group on Thursday to help unveil changes to the Child Nutrition Act.

The bill proposes that more students have more access to school meals, including breakfasts, and would extend the umbrella for assistance for low-income students, making it easier to access meals without the hassles of paperwork that might otherwise deny them based on a small margin declaring them ineligible. It would also extend school lunch programs during the summer for certain programs like camps in rural areas.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, said in a press release that although the program is a start, it doesn’t address the issue of high fat foods in school lunches or providing enough plant based options.
