AFI “The Five”–Five Facts About The “Crash Love” Rockers

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 in Bands, Videos.

AFI got together to give their fans an episode of “The Five” at mtv.com.

“The Five” is pretty much self-explanatory, five things you may or may not have known about AFI.

Half the band is vegan and the other half is vegetarian, for example.

“Some people know that about us, some people don’t,” said Jade Puget, guitarist who’s vegetarian. “But we do try to live a mostly cruelty free lifestyle. And that is the most important part of our band and our personal life.”

Once bassist Hunter Burgan also challenged Paul McCartney to an air bass competition. No winner was declared, so we suspect there should be rematch any day now.

Watch the clip above to learn about the guys’ 7 inchers and pick up a copy of their latest album, Crash Love.

Jane Velez-Mitchell Gone To The Vegan Dogs?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, October 5th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Journalists.

20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards - New York City

Much veggie ado is taking place on Jane Velez-Mitchell‘s Facebook.

A fan recently asked Jane, a vegan, if she was thinking of bringing her dogs over to that side, too.

“Hey Jane, I was just wondering, since you own Chihuahuas and your a vegetarian, do you have your dogs eating “meat-free” dog food? There are such products for dogs and cats of owners that are vegans, but dogs and cats are naturally meat eaters, so I think its bad to their health to restrict meat from their diet. What do you think?”

Yo quiero comida sin carne!

Lots of pet owners, including celebrities like Alicia Silverstone, Shahid Kapoor, and Paul McCartney, have put their dogs and cats on vegetarian diets, with special attention being paid to cats since it’s essential to have food that contains taurine, found mainly in chicken.

But vegan dog and cat food exists.

Have you made your pet go veg?

Did Whiskers enjoy the new meatless dish or did he develop a Goode Family dog Che syndrome?

Dalai Lama Visits Germany

The Dalai Lama has been quite a busy man.

At the age of 74, he has spent the last two months visiting Taiwan, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany and Poland and has now embarked on a North American tour.

At his recent stop at the Peace Summit in Vancouver, there were several celebrities on the guest list, including vegetarians Christie Brinkley and Steve Martin.

The Dalai Lama himself follows a mostly vegetarian diet, but has been criticized in the past, most publicly by Paul McCartney, for following doctors’ advice that he needed meat when he was ill.

After the Dalai Lama stated, “As Buddhists we believe in not causing any suffering to any sentient beings,” Paul wrote to him and said, “Forgive me for pointing this out, but if you eat animals then there is some suffering somewhere along the line.”

Do you already have your favorite contestant in mind?

There are so many favorites to choose from, like Mya, who went vegetarian to get in shape and lost 11 pounds for the competition.

There’s also Kelly Osbourne, who, although rumored to be a flip flop vegetarian, attended the launch of Paul McCartney‘s Meat-Free Monday campaign to get people to reduce their meat intake.

Then there’s Joanna Krupa, who posed in this popular anti-fur ad.

Last year, a spoof PETA ad was recorded by the DWTS contestants, where some “facts” about the cruelties of the dancing industry were revealed.

The Simpsons turn Angolan for Africas DStv

David Mirkin, executive producer for The Simpsons has pulled in some great celebrities to guest star on the show including Leonard DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, and Paul McCartney.

McCartney was quite adamant about the conditions of his appearance, though.

He agreed to only do it if Mirkin kept Lisa Simpson a vegetarian for every episode.

“It’s actually Paul McCartney who was responsible for another permanent change,” Mirkin said. “When I asked him to do the vegetarian episode, he agreed but made me promise to keep Lisa as a vegetarian – and I was happy to comply with that because I’m a vegetarian too! Every time I see him, he always checks – and he’s always surrounded by nine or ten lawyers, so it’s quite frightening!”

Lisa is a veg. Apu is a veg. David is a veg. We’re hoping Marge’s twin sisters make the plunge next!

Great news for you vegan musicians who happen to have Beatles nostalgia.

Planet Waves, a division of the D’Addario Co., is marketing the first set of authorized Beatles guitar straps and picks.

The straps and picks feature designs inspired by Beatles albums, such as Revolver, Meet the Beatles, and Yellow Submarine.

They took a little extra effort to manufacture because ex Beatle Paul McCartney insisted they not contain leather.

“(With) the straps, we also had the limitation from Paul McCartney being vegan that we weren’t allowed to use any hides,” said company president and CEO Jim D’Addario.

Well, actually, Paul’s just vegetarian, but who cares about technicalities!

“We had to create these out of synthetic materials and then put a sealer on them so they don’t affect the finish on guitars.”

Because of the synthetic material, extra care must be taken.

“You have a compatibility issue between some of these plastic materials and some of the finishes on vintage instruments and the instruments that are still made with natural lacquer finishes. And you’ve got to be careful when you put your guitar away you don’t store the strap behind the guitar with a lot of pressure on it. It could change the finish. We put a sealer on them that insulates the strap from the guitar finish. … So we have a little warning sticker on the back that tells people be careful with it. Lots of these straps are sold on the market successfully. It’s a question of making sure you know how to take care of it.”

So not too much drinking on stage during your performance or you won’t be able to care for your Beatles straps and picks properly when you put them away, okay?

The straps and picks can be ordered online.

**RESTRICTIONS APPLY** Moby at The Hangover premiere event at Vue cinema in London

Moby will kick off a set of concerts in Europe next month in efforts to raise climate change awareness in young people.

In a joint deal with MTV, the concerts are part of the European Commission’s “Play to stop – Europe for climate” campaign.

Moby will perform in Stockholm on August 20, with other musicians taking the stages in Budapest and Copenhagen during the following weeks.

Looks like the European Commission and MTV chose the right man for the job. Who better to represent climate change awareness than longtime vegan Moby?

There’s no greater way to reduce your impact on the planet than to choose a plant based diet, which can reduce livestock emissions, and clear land that would normally be used to feed farm animals for people.

The musician has also been active in supporting Paul McCartney’s Meat Free Monday campaign, aimed at getting people to just reduce their meat consumption by going vegetarian one day a week.

Sure hope he plasters a “Go Veg” sign on his stage set.
