Wendy Matthews of Farm Sanctuary has started a petition that urges Obama to promote nutrition education programs that emphasize grains, fruits and vegetables; reduce the use of antibiotics in livestock animals; improve waste disposal methods on farms and eliminating practices used where animals are intensely confined, such as debeaking and tail-docking.

Ellen DeGeneres is the spokesperson for this year’s Adopt A Turkey event from Farm Sanctuary.

The vegan actress is asking everyone to adopt a turkey that resides on the sanctuary grounds in lieu of having one on their dinner plate.

“Did you know that every year between 250 and 300 million turkeys are bred for slaughter in the United States?” DeGeneres asked. “More than 46 million for Thanksgiving alone. So, this Thanksgiving instead of eating a turkey, please join me in adopting one from Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt-A-Turkey Project and you can give a turkey something to be thankful for.”

Gene Baur

“Tragically, the way most Americans eat, food is more like poison, making us sick and killing us prematurely. Heart disease and cancer are the nation’s top killers, and the risks of both can be reduced by eating plants instead of animal products. Removing meat, milk and eggs from the menu also prevents animal suffering and goes a long way toward lightening our environmental footprint. People are finally recognizing the profound impacts of their food choices, and we are now in the midst of a burgeoning food movement.”

Gene Baur, co-founder and president of Farm Sanctuary. Baur just wrapped up a cross-country tour named “Just Eats,” where he traveled across the U.S. sharing the joy of vegan food.
