Michael Jackson: No Animals On Tour, Not Off The Wall With PETA

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 9th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Male Singers.

Michael Jackson press conference in London

Not long ago, we brought you the rumor going around that Michael Jackson was planning to use live animals during his comeback tour and that the show would feature wild animals accompanying Michael on stage such as elephants, panthers, and birds.

PETA received word that Michael does not plan to use such animals or any live animals in his shows. Whew! Wipe sweat from brow.

However, they’re still not letting him Off the Wall yet.

In a recent blog entry, the group chastised Michael for his previous mistreatment of animals.

“Too bad he still has a spotty past when it comes to compassion for animals. It had been widely reported that Jackson planned to ride an elephant on stage and use panthers, but subjecting animals to amplified noise, bright lights, and the fast pace of a massive concert production is cruel. Plus, his rap sheet from the not-too-distant past includes dumping his chimpanzee, Bubbles, with a Hollywood trainer. And many of the animals he left behind at Neverland Ranch ended up being sold at auction, despite repeated offers from PETA to help place them in sanctuaries. His orangutans were reportedly sold to a private owner in Connecticut, two of his alligators are languishing at the disgusting G.W. Exotic Animal Park, his giraffes in the care of a private owner in Arizona are on the verge of being evicted, and more.”

“Michael, it’s bad, it’s bad, and you know it.”

Radio One DJ Fearne Cotton Talks Anorexia, Vegetarian Diet

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 9th, 2009 in Radio Hosts, TV Hosts.

Fearne Cotton promoting the BAFTA awards

Radio One DJ Fearne Cotton recently featured a documentary about websites encouraging girls and women to starve themselves.

According to the UK Sun, during the documentary, The Truth About Online Anorexia, Fearne met a woman whose daughter had died of the disease as well as an anorexic woman who runs a “pro-ana” website which encourages girls with eating disorders by printing diet tips and pictures of bone-thin models.

Fearne thinks many celebrities who blab about their latest diet should keep quiet because of the negative impact they could have on young girls.

“I think that is irresponsible. If you are doing a diet and you are a role model, don’t go splashing it about, because kids might just take hold of it and start doing it too.”

“When I was a kid I would always look up to people like Zoe Ball and Denise Van Outen and, whether they liked it or not, I would be influenced by what they said. So, as someone who is on TV now, I feel I have to take some kind of stance as a role model. I would hate to put out any kind of unhealthy advice.”

Fearne has no problem sharing the secret to maintaining her figure by following a vegetarian diet and lots of exercise. And giving chocolate the thumbs up, too.

“I eat a healthy diet but my social life revolves around eating out and I love baking more than anything in the world, and eating chocolate.”

Deirdre Imus, Don Imus’ Wife, Got College Schooled On Veg Life

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 9th, 2009 in Authors, Business.

medium_imusSome say the college years are the best times of their lives. Deirdre Imus, radio talk show host Don Imus’ wife, possibly made one of the best decisions in her life in college.

While attending Villanova university, Deirdre became very interested in correlations between the environment and health. She soon learned a vegetarian diet played a huge factor.

From dotmed.com:

“Because I was involved in athletics at school, I wanted to be as fit as possible. I learned how variations in my diet could affect my performance on the track. I paid attention to the food I ate, and it was easy to extend that concept to all the things that could affect my health, and of course, that’s everything you come in contact with on a daily basis.”

“From what I learned, I became a vegetarian, and have been for about 25 years now.”

Deirdre and Don run a ranch in New Mexico designed to give the American cowboy experience to children with cancer or blood disorders or who have lost a sibling to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The menu on the ranch is strictly vegan and only natural, non-toxic cleaners are used.

Deirdre has her own name in the business world without Don as well. She is the Founder and President of  The Deirdre Imus Environmental Center for Pediatric Oncology® at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, as well as the author of several bestsellng books.

Cloris Leachman Unveils Her New PETA Ad In Times Square

Cloris Leachman’s gown for PETA’s Let Vegetarianism Grow on You campaign is no typical ballroom dress.

All the details of the fitting and adjustments were revealed at the L.A. Times blog.

L.A. designer Mia Gyzander, the same designer who dressed up Alyssa Milano for another “Let Vegetarianism Grow on You” campaign, created the vegetable based Cinderella costume.

Several heads of green leaf lettuce and red cabbage were required to assemble the bodice, which took a week to fashion.

“But to make sure Cloris was dressed in the freshest produce available, the full dress was assembled the day of the shoot,” PETA spokesman Michael McGraw told latimesblog.latimes.com.

So now we know.

Mia Gyzander has the skills to make vegetables look good on any figure.

New Vegetarian Ms. Dynamite Might Struggle On Hell’s Kitchen

The UK Hell’s Kitchen is back, full of celebrity cooking adventures.

One contestant on the show is Ms. Dynamite, born Niomi McLean Daley, an award winning hip hop singer and rapper.

Depending on the challenges given, Ms. Dynamite might have some performance problems on the show, given the fact that she recently turned vegetarian.

“Once I started to cut down on the meat and dairy products, it started to improve – it was all down to vanity, to be honest,” she told the UK Daily Mail.

“I don’t want to get on my high horse about it but I do feel a lot healthier in my diet. I don’t think I would struggle to cook meat during the show but gutting and skinning an animal would be a different story.”

Vegetarian hatin’ Gordon Ramsay started the UK Hell’s Kitchen, then left to run the famous U.S version. What’s fun about the UK version is that celebrities are the contestants.

The new series of Hell’s Kitchen starts next week in the UK on ITV1.
