Kathy Freston Celebrates Her New Book Quantum Wellness

One dilemma vegans have is whether to support non vegan companies.

Kathy Freston, the author who inspired Oprah Winfrey to go vegan for 21 days, has her stance on this and recently shared it with W Magazine’s Senior Fashion Features Editor Dana Wood. Wood and W Mag are on a full blown vegan kick, regularly featuring animal-free fashion in the sea of forest critter coats and cuffs.

Freston shared with Dana that she buys items from non vegan designers to encourage them to expand their collection.

“By buying non-leather items from non-vegan fashion houses, Freston hopes to encourage designers to step up the cruelty-free offerings. “It’s just like restaurants,” she says. “I almost prefer to go to mainstream places because I think it’s good that they get requests for vegetarian and vegan meals. The more they get positive feedback on that, the more items they’ll add to their menus. And I think it’s the same with fashion houses.””

Sounds like a good way to approach it.

And in the end, this might just help veg food and clothing become mainstream.

Pamela Anderson, usually one of the best true to their word veg Hollywood stars, occasionally has her flip ups.

Like when she didn’t know KFC, a company she frequently speaks out against, helped sponsor her Girl On the Loose show in Australia.

Or launching a strip club in a steakhouse.

Yes, the vegan Pamela Anderson has joined forces with Audrina Patridge and Samantha Ronson to launch the opening of  Sapphire New York, a Gentleman’s club, which is part of the Prime 333 Steakhouse on the upper East side of New York city.

Other guests on the attendee list include Sopranos cast members Vincent Curatola and Steve Schirripa.

A strip club steakhouse? Really, Pamela, couldn’t you have found a better venue to attend a launch? How about an all natural juice strip club? Tutti fruity for booty?

Along with serving up blond and brunette meat (just had to say that), the club will feature several fillets and wines.

Vegetarian Times hosted their 2009 Dining Out Awards and nearly 700 readers voted for restaurants based in different regions of the U.S and several specialty veg restaurants like Most Eco-Fabulous and Totally RAWsome.

Chrissie Hynde’s Vegiterranean won “Most Promising Rookie.”

Several other restaurants made the cut, including The Chicago Diner for the midwest. If you recall, the diner is where Ellen DeGeneres went gaga over the vegan seitan hot wings and had some Fed Ex’d to her studios in California.

Peter Max’s fave, Candle 79, won the category for the northeast.

Sir Richard Bransons Rock The Kasbah Benefiting Virgin Unite

John Salley’s a busy man these days. This week he’s giving away veggie burgers to Chicago school children as part of a campaign to teach them how a vegetarian diet receives the best grade.

He also recently sat down with ESPN to answer questions submitted by fans.

John got several questions related to his vegetarian diet and lifestyle, including, “did guys ever mess with you knowing you didn’t eat meat?”

John answered, “No, no one ever really messes with me!”

Oh, yeah.

Here are a couple of other veg related questions from the chat.

What kind of work are you doing with PETA?
I did a PSA about a year ago with PETA since then they have invited me to speak about the health benefits of being a vegetarian.

How did you make the decision to go vegetarian?
I was a vegetarian first [before I became vegan]. I had high blood pressure at 27, everybody in my family died of cancer and I new it was in the food so I changed my diet.

Girlie Girl Chloe Jo Berman And Vegan Pets On Good Morning America

Gretchen Ryans Little Pretty Exhibition Opening

Wow. Talk about movin’ on up!

Blogger Chloe Jo Berman of Girlie Girl Army is on the fast track to vegan and ethical fame. She recently appeared on Good Morning America to discuss the issue of vegan pets.

Several celebrities, including Alicia Silverstone, Paul McCartney, and Dennis Kucinich have placed their dogs on a vegan diet.

Silverstone even says her doggies fart less because of it.

But is it healthy?

There’s lots of controversy over whether our pets were truly meant to be carnivores, especially cats, who need certain nutrients like taurine, found in meat products.

Chloe said, “There’s no reason why I should take a life for another life. I don’t understand. If I wouldn’t put her on a plate as dinner why should I do it to a cow or a lamb or a chicken.”

“Who are hungry little vegan doggies?” Chloe asks as she feeds them apples, bread, and tofu.

Go watch the video of Chloe and check out her cute vegan doggies who have been vegan for six years.

And congrats to Chloe for the publicity. You go Girlie Girl!

Russell Simmons To Bossip: I’m Vegan And My Game Is Tight

The Cinema Society Hosts A Screening Of The Mysteries Of Pittsburgh

Gossip blogs can be so cruel.

Bossip.com spied model Julie Henderson and Russell Simmons looking cozy and wrote up a post titled, “Digging For Gold,” implying that Henderson was looking for Simmons to be her sugar daddy.

Simmons wrote back and said:

“I read this morning your headline, “Digging for gold” with a picture of me and Julie Henderson saying that the picture was taken last week at some food event. This “digging for gold” photo was taken last night @ my apt. The event was a fundraiser for the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding…so you’re right we were digging for gold! The honoree was LL Cool J. The organization promotes religious and racial harmony. It is a deep investment of my time, passion and money. Currently, the main focus is Muslim/Jewish relations and we have 52 programs in America where imams speak in synagogues and rabbis speak in mosques We are also spreading this work all over the world. Please send your gold or donations to ffeu.org. Also, as for my “boney, boo” Julie Henderson, she is nobody’s gold digger…she is a quite independent supermodel. FYI. Before yoga and marriage, back in the Krush Groove days, I was fat and high on coke, but I was still known to have the baddest girls from all over the world. Now I’m rich, vegan, sober and in much better shape…Can’t u guys just accept that my game is tight!!!!

Oh, yeah. Don’t hate on the vegan man.

A Powerful Noise Live

The folks at Chef’s Secret on E. 45th Street in New York city have what you call an obsess-much for vegan actress Natalie Portman.

It seems they’ve named a salad after her. But like Emmylou Harris wasn’t too pleased with being told she was like bacon and made everything better, Natalie probably wouldn’t be too thrilled at the “Natalie Portman” salad consisting of “lobster, seaweed and strawberry served with Wasabi and Japanese mayonnaise.”

What on earth is this craziness? You might call it honoring. You might call it disturbing. One thing’s for sure: Any fan of Natalie who loves her enough to name a salad after her should know not to name a SEAFOOD salad after her.

New Yorkers, you may want to stop by and let these guys in on the secret: Natalie’s got no room for lobster love on the menu.
