As if you really need another reason to enter our contest to win a copy of Erin McKenna’s BabyCakes cookbook as part of our one year anniversary giveaway. Isn’t the picture of the cupcakes on the book cover enough?

The lovely lady who founded the New York city bakery that is so popular among celebrities and mere non Hollywood mortals like ourselves answered a few of our questions about herself, the bakery, and some of her favorite recipes from her recently published cookbook, BabyCakes : Vegan, Gluten-Free, and (Mostly) Sugar-Free Recipes from New York’s Most Talked-About Bakery.

How did you determine which of your recipes to include in the BabyCakes cookbook?
I chose the recipes that people seemed to favor. I wanted to offer a collection of the greatest recipes.

What are a few of your favorite recipes from the cookbook?
I think my favorites are the volcanoes and the macaroons for sure.

You used to work in fashion and you said the one thing that really relieved stress at the end of the day was experimenting with baking and that prompted you to change careers. What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs who may still be stuck in a day job and want to get out and have a successful business?
I would tell them to live fearlessly and go for what is in their heart. It will work out and nothing beats doing what you love for a living. It’s what life is about.

There are several celebrities that have their personal stories in the Baby Cakes cookbook like Natalie Portman and Pamela Anderson? What was either your first or most memorable experience learning a celebrity was so fond of your desserts?
The first time a celebrity made it known how fond he was of BabyCakes was Jason Schwartzman. He came in once by himself the first time and then brought a whole gang of friends with him and had an eating contest in here. He was going crazy over everything–it was really fun!

Guess how many siblings Erin has? Four, five, six, seven? Higher than that! Find out after the jump… (more…)

Rachael Ray, Dog Isaboo Run From Vegans

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, June 19th, 2009 in Chefs.

North Shore Animal League Americas 2nd Annual DogCatemy Awards

Although she included an entire vegetarian recipe chapter in her Big Orange Book cookbook, it didn’t look as though Rachael Ray was too interested in talking to vegans. Or maybe she just wasn’t interested in talking to Super Vegans.

Roseann Marulli and Joy Askew over at SuperVegan.com set up a Farm Stock Animal Sanctuary booth in Union Park Square with a huge sign overhead that read, “Ask A Vegan.”

It was an opportunity for people to stop by and ask questions about veganism, animal rights, and get literature if they wanted.

Rachael Ray and her husband John Cusimano stopped by, along with their dog Isaboo. John stayed and chatted for a while, but when Rachael found out what the booth was about, she and Isaboo walked away faster than you can say, “Extra Virgin Olive Oil.”

So even though she listened to vegetarians on tour who expressed interest in more veg recipes for her cookbook, don’t expect more vegan recipes anytime soon.

“I guess it’s not just the Food Network that’s afraid of vegans!” Roseann said.

Or maybe it was Isaboo’s idea, as she was scared of what vegan dog food Rachael might try to concoct.

By the way, the gals are still doling out vegan advice every other Saturday, same time, same place.

Celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay and Anthony Bourdain may be the biggest vegetarian haters in the world.

Bourdain thinks vegetarians are a pain in the rump, and calls their vegan counterparts, “Hezbollah-like splinter factions,” who are a “persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn.” Sorry to bother you, Anthony.

Gordon Ramsay wants to enforce a strict dietary policy with his children. He once said, “My biggest nightmare would be if the kids ever came up to me and said ‘Dad, I’m a vegetarian.’ Then I would sit them on the fence and electrocute them.”

Yep, Gordon would pull his hairs out at the site of a Boca burger. And if vegans irritate Anthony so much, we might as well have fun annoying him. So between the two veg hatin’ celebrity chefs, who would you rather…

Mario Batali Loves Eating Vegetarians For Lunch And Dinner

Joyful Heart Foundation Gala Celebrity Arrivals In NYC

Mario Batali and fellow vegetarian hater Anthony Bourdain recently did a Q & A session with fans and one person asked Batali what he thought of vegetarians.

“Some of my favorite things to eat are vegetarians!”

Ha, ha haaaaaa, Mario.

Gwyneth Paltrow scolded him for eating baby animals during their culinary adventures in Spain…On The Road Again, saying it was bad karma to do so. Of course, given her phony vegetarian history (turkey burgers, anyone?) she didn’t have much room to talk, but good for her for selectively taking up for some animals.

Yeah, we’re sure there’s even worse bad karma for those who eat baby AND grass fed animals.

Nigella Lawson Veg Benefits: Weightloss, Hubby Actually Eats Food

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, May 18th, 2009 in Chefs.

Nigella Lawson signing autographsBritish celebrity chef Nigella Lawson is just as known for her curves as she is for her cream pies.

But lately some have become concerned she’s been downing one pie too many and are afraid she’ll go from pleasantly plump to piggishly porky.

Lawson’s been a good sport, though, reportedly going to a personal trainer. Her fans are hoping she won’t go overboard. Or start eating like her vegetarian husband. From watoday.com.au:

“I hope she doesn’t turn into a size zero waif,” wrote a certain Mise, from Limerick, Ireland. “Nigella’s curves are what make her.” Another hoped she wouldn’t become “old and haggard” like husband Charles Saatchi, who turned vegetarian, swore off his wife’s food and lost 25 kilograms in the process.

What??!! Nigella’s man won’t eat her Anglo-Asian lamb salad, pancakes with wafer bacon and maple syrup, or Bulgar wheat salad with pink seared lamb (what’s up with all these baby animals, anyway?)?

If Nigella would go veg,  she sure would make things easier at home (honey, just take the lamb out of the Bulgar wheat), she’d shed those few unwanted pounds, plus have a better chance of living a long, healthier life with cabbage lovin’ Charles.

Not to mention a hot, one on one, cooking show she could team up with Heather Mills and do. Or maybe even a three-way. Pamela Anderson has expressed interest in a bikinis on the beach veggie TV series.

Gordon Ramsay Goes Vegetarian After Electrocuting Himself

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 in Chefs.

Gordon Ramsey Signs Copies of Gordon Ramseys Healthy Appetite

Gordon Ramsay, the celebrity chef notorious for his not so kind remarks about vegetarians and vegetarian food has become a vegetarian.

If you recall us telling you, Gordon’s hatred of vegetarians was so passionate, he once said he’d put his children on a fence and electrocute them if they adopted the diet.

That has changed.

When Gordon’s wife Tana, announced she was becoming vegetarian and that should would force the diet on the children, Gordon was less than pleased.

“I couldn’t believe after so many years of marriage, she would betray me like this,” Ramsay said, according to Chef Gossip Daily. “So, I decided to put her on the electric fence and electrocute her to prevent anything like this from happening to my seeds.”

While trying to put his wife on the electric fence, Gordon managed to shock himself. The great pain he experienced brought him to an epiphany-like state where he suddenly had more compassion for animals and wanted a healthier diet for himself and his family.

“I’m just glad it wasn’t anal electrocution like those poor animals on fur farms receive,” Gordon said, rubbing his bum to emphasize how painful that would have been.

Now every evening, Gordon likes to cook vegetarian food with his wife Tana. The children are found of tofu, but Gordon prefers they eat seitan, because it “sounds more devilish” and he hates for anyone to think he’s softened in any other area than his diet.

Note: This story is a bunch of vegan hogwash. But it’s April 1st, so what were you expecting?
