Erykah Badu: Can Vegans Kill Wasps?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 7th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Female Musicians, Female Singers.

Erykah Badu performs at the 40th New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival

Singer and musician Erykah Badu Tweeted about her dilemma on taking out one annoying wasp:

“i wonder should vegan ‘s kill aggressive wasps ? anyone have updated handbook? cause this mafuka gettin close to my head now..”

Jared Leto saved a spider from death row at a Proposition 2 party. Kristen Bell won’t tolerate you smashing a bug in front of her.

Our closest of smart-alec meat eating friends will always casually remind us that bugs and other insects are killed when harvesting plants.

Do you smack the flies at the picnic table or just shoo them away, hoping they’ll take up residence someplace else?

Perhaps the No-Kill Bugbuster might come in handy for Erykah and the rest of us.

“I believe Oprah had no idea that KFC has refused to take any action to stop its suppliers from scalding birds alive and breaking birds’ wings and legs during live shackling.”

Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs Drummer Brian Chase Went Veg In Experiments

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 7th, 2009 in Male Musicians.

2004 MTV Movie Awards - Arrivals

Brian Chase, drummer for the musical group Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs recently wrote on his blog about his path to vegetarianism.

“I became vegetarian as an experiment, to see what it was like, and to do so without adhering to a hard and fast ideology. First it was a physical experience: I felt lighter, more open, and even stronger; more efficient.”

“Then I understood vegetarianism on a moral level. Here was the way I approached it: To live in harmony with one’s environment, there needs to be a constant sense of give-and-take, a mutual respect that promotes sustainability for eternity.”

“Tonight, I finally understood what it means to be a practicing vegetarian. Some vegetarians say it’s ‘wrong’ to kill animals or use animals for food (as I did above). I see that as a matter of principle- and principles aren’t necessarily true or real. It is almost always more powerful to have something be an innate experience, to feel it from your core rather than as an ideology. It finally made sense to me what it means to be practicing vegetarianism: it has to do with making the decision to willingly act for kindness and to renounce violence. To not eat meat, is to say to myself, “I will consciously make the decision to not eat animals killed for my sustenance”

Guitarist Nick Zinner is another veg rocker for the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. Now if they could only bring Karen O. over…

Blossom’s Mayim Bialik Reluctant To Classify Faith And Vegan Diet

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 7th, 2009 in Actresses.

Opening Of CavaliaMayim Bialik entertained adolescents in the early 90s on the NBC sitcom, Blossom, with wild looking vintage store outfits, frank discussions about issues like puberty, and a recovering drug addict brother named Joey with an obsessive tendency to use his catch phrase, “Whoa,” one time too many.

Mayim is all grown up now, with a PhD in neuroscience (read about her work on Prader-Willi syndrome) and quite active with her Jewish faith and in the Jewish community.

She recently interviewed with Jewcy.com, where she admitted it’s hard to classify herself, both faithwise and diet.

“I’m hesitant to label myself or call myself Orthodox because people will be like, “Celebrity Mayim Bialik says she does X, but I saw her doing Y” – I guess, to be safe, I would say I’m Conservative, but in reality, I’d say Conservadox. But my husband and I have definitely increased our observance over the years, and we’re always trying to grow.”

“We kinda do the Big Three [Shabbos, keeping kosher, and family purity], but it’s hard. I mean, it’s hard for everyone to classify themselves, but it’s a whole new level of hard when people are watching you. Like, I pretty much eat a vegan diet, but I eat eggs if they’re in things. What I say is, I eat a mostly vegan diet, and that’s kind of how it is with Judaism. We keep Shabbos, we keep kosher, and I don’t know if people want to hear about the Mikveh, but, um, yeah.”

Amy Smart Says No To Meat. Or Does She?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 in Actresses.

Natural Resources Defense Councils 20th Anniversary CelebrationAccess Hollywood has created a slideshow of Celebrity Vegetarians: They Say No To Meat.

Actress and former fashion model Amy Smart made the cut. Smart has worked with the Humane Society, the environmental advocacy group Heal The Bay, and was named one of Organic Style magazine’s “Woman with Organic Style” of 2004.

We’ll warn you by saying not every celeb in the slideshow may be 100% meatless. The same Internet sources that said Clint Eastwood was a vegan (cough, cough rhymes with Tickimedia, say Amy is a former vegetarian. And Access Hollywood still has Anne Hathaway on its list, even though she admitted to post Oscar burgers.

But tried and true stars you could bet your entire paycheck on in a recession like Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman, and Paul McCartney are included as well.

Oprah Winfrey Giving KFC To America, Grief To Chickens

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian, TV Hosts.

Premiere Of MGMs The Great Debaters - ArrivalsIf Oprah Winfrey had a Pinocchio nose, it would stretch taller than the height of her condo’s building.

Awhile back, Miss O. did a documentary on chicken factory farm abuse.

Maybe she gave all the chickens prizes like she does to her audience members and now they don’t mind being boiled. She has no problem making the abused chickens martyrs as she’s announced she’s giving every family in America a free 2-piece Kentucky Grilled Chicken Meal.

How could she? After all, it was her involvement with so many animal rights issues that won her the love of PETA and it’s Person of the Year title she enjoyed scooting Obama out of the spotlight to share.

Could it be that Oprah is just trying to do something to feed hungry, credit crunched America and has completely forgotten PETA’s ongoing beef with KFC due to its treatment of chickens?

Whatever her reasons, she could have done much better. Coupons for Subway would have at least given people the option of  a much healthier and less cruel Veggie Max Patty or Veggie Delight Sandwich.

What other ways could O have treated America and chickens right?

Alicia Silverstone Goes Head To Head With Nutritionist On Meat And Dairy

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

2009 Heart Of Green AwardsNothing better than two hot ladies duking it out in the ring.

Before you start to think this is a really sexist blog (especially if you’ve read that post on the vegetarian Playmate of the Year, Ida Ljungqvist), let us explain.

Alicia Silverstone and nutritionist Rachel Beller recently gave their input on the health effects of eliminating meat and dairy from your diet.

Here are a few replays:

Alicia Silverstone:
The excess animal protein in meat and dairy is so acidic that it causes the body to release calcium to buffer the acidity. Osteoporosis is very rare in countries that eat little or no dairy. Meat and dairy contain no phytonutrients, no complex carbs (which are very important). Basically meat and dairy are saturated fat and protein.

Rachel Beller:
The bottom line is that Alicia is NOT wrong, but the statement is polarizing. It sounds like all meat and dairy should be avoided; however, like so many things in life, it’s never this simple. A high protein diet that particularly emphasizes an intake of animal sources of meat and dairy does cause an acidic environment in the body, which subsequently must be neutralized by the body’s calcium. The prevailing idea is that calcium is absorbed from the bones to balance the acidic environment, thus leading to bone loss. Numerous studies have supported this theory for years. This is the basis of a long-standing claim that we (the American people) should increase our intake of vegetable sources of protein and decrease our animal sources of protein.

We’ve heard Alicia’s and Rachel’s input, now it’s time to hear yours.
