Chrissie Hynde has closed the vegetarian restaurant she opened approximately four years ago in her hometown of Akron, Ohio, The Vegiterranean.

The singer posted a farewell message on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

“It’s is with great regret that The VegiTerranean in downtown Akron has closed it doors for the last time,” Hynde wrote.

“This has been a labor of love for us for the last four years. We tried everything we could to keep the restaurant going but unfortunately due to the current economic climate this has not been possible.”

–Chrissie Hynde, on a proposal to bring Nocton Dairies, a mega-dairy farm to Britain. The facility would house several thousand cows in indoor sheds and require each animal to produce 10,000 liters of milk each year, some sources cite as being as much as 43% higher than the national average. Cows subjected to produce large volumes of milk like that is expected at a large farms are more likely to experience medical issues, such as mastitis, an infection in the cow’s udder.

Several British celebrities have spoken out about a plan to bring factory dairy farms to Britain, including vegetarians Leona Lewis and Chrissie Hynde.

The World Society for the Protection of Animals has launched a campaign, “Not In My Cuppa,” educating British people on the effects of large-scale dairy farms on animals and the environment and asking them to state they would not drink milk from battery cows.

The plan to bring Nocton Dairy to Britain is one of the first in the UK, according to the WSPA. And almost half of the British surveyed said milk made them think of cows grazing in green pastures and 61% said they’d never buy milk produced from such a large farm.

Chrissie Hynde‘s been eying different cities to launch her second Vegiterranean, a vegan Italian restaurant she opened in her hometown in Ohio a few years ago. While those of us in the U.S. would love a Chrissie dining establishment near us, she’s thinking about taking her business down under. In an open letter to Melbourne, Australia, published in the Herald Sun, Hynde discusses the possibilities of setting up vegan shop there, taking advantage of the numerous local farmers and vendors to provide the freshest ingredients. She is impressed by Melbourne’s green attitude, both food-wise and for their transportation. “Been exploring Melbourne. Mainly nosing around to figure out if my vegan restaurant would fly here. I think it would. Yes, a Vegiterranean in Melbourne. Local produce, local investors, local flavour. There’s nothing like it here and I think the climate is perfect – progressive, health conscious – animal friendly?” (more…)

Chrissie Hynde has revealed to Vogue more details on her ethical clothing line she’s launching with fellow musician and band member JP Jones.

Fairground Luck will contain no animal skins, and was inspired by her friend, singer/musician and vegetarian Emmylou Harris.

Two years ago Chrissie Hynde met JP Jones at an art party in London. Jones suggested the two collaborate in songwriting together which led Hynde to do something she hasn’t done in decades–form a brand new band, Chrissie, JP Jones & the Fairground Boys.

Now the pair is embarking on another collaboration. They plan to launch a vegan clothing line in the fall, according to Spin Magazine.

No other details were revealed in the interview, but let’s hope that between the two of them, creative, ethical and possibly even professional attire for both sexes will be available to those with the highest clothing standards.
