Russell Simmons recently chatted with Don Imus on Imus In The Morning and the two spent a considerable time discussing Simmons’ veganism. Here’s a little bit from the conversation.

Simmons: It’s one of the worst karmic disasters in human history. Fifteen billion suffering farm animals.

Imus: People, who, for example, go get a big ol’ bucket of chicken. The way those chickens are housed and slaughtered and tormented. I really think you’re taking on the karma of the chicken. These are tormented, tortured animals. They can feel pain just like you can.

One interesting twist: Imus is a vegan too. He’s also a cattle rancher. Watch the clip to hear Simmons’ response to the idea of Imus’ support of humane slaughter of animals.

“Saturday Night Live” poked fun of the Fox News channel and its group of conservative hosts, including Glenn Beck and Greta Van Susteren, who’s played by vegetarian Kristen Wiig.

Fox News is re-branded from the often seen as vitriolic to the “civil, polite network,” something MSNBC’s James Carville, played by Bill Hader, doubts will ever work, as he jokes:

“Today I had nice lunch with Arianna Huffington, Michael Moore and my friend Lucien — he’s a gay soldier. We ate at a vegan restaurant, which is nice because it means no animals got hurt. Which is important, because animals are just people with fur. Isn’t that nice Sean Hannity?”

But the guys at Fox aren’t always as bad some make them out to be. Hey, at least Glenn Beck will call out Al Gore for promoting environmentalism while still eating meat, which wastes water, pollutes water and contributes to greenhouse gases.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Prompts Questions Of Food Equality (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, January 17th, 2011 in Authors, Farming, Food & Drink, Videos.

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is usually a reflection on racial equality and the gains this activist (who’s family embraced a veg diet) made in schools and other aspects of public access.

Equality is not just restricted to being able to eat at a restaurant, but also the ability to access quality, affordable food at supermarkets. Some might argue that we haven’t reached equal opportunity in this area.

Bryant Terry, vegan chef, author and food justice activist, gave his thoughts about how access to wholesome food may be connected to institutional racism at culinate.com:

“The first thing that comes up for me when I hear that question is the fact that just one percent of farmers in the United States are African-American, and that since the 19th century African-Americans have been systematically denied access to land.”

Bob’s Burgers is a new series on Fox about a family ran burger business and all the hilarity that ensues during a normal workweek at a small-owned business. With the word “burger” in the title, you know it’s no vegetarian paradise, but even if you eat meat, you might find your next burger joint visit revolting if the owners are anything like the Belcher family.

Take episode one, for example. Tina Belcher, one of Bob’s daughters, announces she has a rash in her pubic region and states she might not be good with the grill due to the fact one hand will be tied up scratching the region.

Next door appears to be either a PETA or an anti-PETA office, with the acronym PFETA (People For Eating Tasty Animals?). There’s a “Meat is Murder” sticker on the window, but we’re still unsure if this is a legitimate AR office or a mockery that’s been targeted. On the other side is a crematorium (where the regular customers go earlier than most, we’re sure).

The special for one day was so inappropriately titled “The Child Molester Burger” because it comes with a piece of candy to lure customers to it.

To top it all off, the health inspector, responding to a rumor that Bob’s puts human remains in its burgers (maybe someone found a strand of Tina’s pubic hair in there), says that’s only okay if the burgers contain the FDA allowed amount of 4% or less human flesh in them.

Bob’s Burgers is still funny because we’re dealing with cartoon characters. However, a recent study found kids in real life should stay clear of all burgers even if they aren’t associated with child molesters. Children who eat more than 3 burgers per week may be at a higher risk for asthma and wheezing. There’s no data on whether or not these burgers also give them pubic rashes. Maybe those are the patties with human remains in them.

Full episode one of Bob’s Burgers can be seen below.

Robin Quivers Makes Superbowl Snacks On Vegucating Robin (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 7th, 2011 in Food & Drink, Radio Hosts, Videos.

The Superbowl is about a month away and for those who enjoy the countdown, the National Football League has provided a nice stopwatch on its website.

What the NFL isn’t providing, however, is a recipe for healthy, vegetable chips to replace the salty ones in the bag you enjoy dipping while gulping down the vegan beer.

Robin Quivers and chef Gavan suggest making these from carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes and rutabagas–all fantastic tuber vegetables–as a great TV watching snack on Quivers’ web based series on vegan cooking, Vegucating Robin.

Plus, cool tips like right way to peel a vegetable and how to use a mandolin are included.
