Simon Cowell Meat Free Mondays

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, February 22nd, 2010 in Food & Drink, TV Hosts.

Pop mogul, Simon Cowell, arrives at Fountain Studios ahead of Saturday night's live X Factor show

Is Simon Cowell giving up mincemeat for Leona Lewis?

The Sydney Morning Herald reports the Bleeding Love singer has convinced X Factor and American Idol‘s most cantankerous judge to support Paul McCartney‘s Meat-Free Mondays campaign.

And it sounds like Leona has Simon already eating tofu from the palm of her hand.

“Anything I ask Simon to get involved in regarding my charity and environmental concerns he always does. He’s cool like that.”

Meanwhile, Leona is spreading the word about vegetarianism at work.

“I’ve banned meat from all photo shoots to the tour itself simply because I don’t support the meat industry.”

Simon’s mother, Julie Cowell, reports her son is getting serious with his girlfriend.

Julie told Britain’s Hello magazine, “I haven’t seen the ring yet, but I do believe they will get engaged. But if you’d asked me this three weeks ago, I would have said, ‘Absolutely not!”

Will there soon be a wedding with vegan cake after the ceremony?

Ellen DeGeneres Sugar Cleanse Begs For Alternatives

Hope For Haiti Now: A Global Benefit For Earthquake Relief held in Los Angeles

Ellen DeGeneres went on a mission to give up processed sugar to gain energy (and maybe to ease that sexual tension between her and Simon on American Idol).

Giving up sugar doesn’t mean giving up sweetness, by the way.

Try alternatives like honey, agave nectar or rice syrup to sweet talk your way out of the white stuff.

Before you embark on any sugarless  journey, check with your doc first!

Ellen DeGeneres Vegan Chili And Nachos Recipe (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, February 12th, 2010 in Chefs, Food & Drink, Recipes, TV Hosts, Videos.

Ellen DeGeneres‘ right hand vegan food man, Roberto Martin, demonstrated how to make vegan chili and nachos on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The recipe, which can be found here, uses lean Mexican flavored soy crumbles and vegan cheese for sprinkling, plus homemade nacho cheese.

The vegan chili sounds delish, but something sounds weird about the homemade nacho cheese, which is mainly made up of tofu and vegan mayonnaise…what the heck did chef Martin do with the nutritional yeast, an ingredient that was seemingly missing, but otherwise normally found in vegan cheese?

Maybe it was nutritional yeast taco seasoning Martin poured in?

Watch and solve the mystery yourself.

Colbert Report Full Episodes Political Humor Economy

Stephen Colbert recently hosted Jonathan Safran Foer on The Colbert Report to discuss his latest book, Eating Animals.

Foer discussed the realities of how factory farms and the mass production of meat affects animals, giving the example that turkeys today don’t get it on.

“The Thanksgiving turkey isn’t even capable of sexually reproducing anymore,” Foer said.

When Colbert asked how turkeys multiply, Foer first joked that they are stimulated by porn.

Stimulated by PETA anti-fur ads featuring naked women, no doubt.

“They’re all artificially inseminated,” Foer claimed.

Not resisting the chance to offend, Colbert placed a plate of bacon in front of Foer, which Foer, keeping in theme with animal reproduction, labeled as merely, “flaccid.”

Hope For Haiti Now: A Global Benefit For Earthquake Relief held in Los Angeles

Ellen DeGeneres was interviewed by Katie Couric and she told Katie about her motivation for going vegan.

It all started with a little film narrated by Joaquin Phoenix.

“I watched a documentary, Earthlings,” Ellen said. “It’s inside footage of factory farms; 50 billion animals a year are killed. They’re in pain, treated badly, diseased, pumped full of antibiotics. I saw the reality and just couldn’t ignore it. And I’m healthier and happier.”

You’ve heard Ellen’s reason’s for giving up meat, dairy, fish, cheese and poultry.

What’s yours?

AFI FEST 2009 Screening Of Precious: Based On The Novel 'PUSH' By Sapphire

During her chat with Oprah, Alicia Silverstone brought up the subject of how being vegetarian helps you, um, do #2 better.

“I will say this,” Oprah said about being vegan. “Your poop is fabulous.”

“Don’t you want to bring your friends in and say ‘Look at this beautiful thing,'” Alicia added.

With all the fiber consumed from healthy vegetarian food like fruits and vegetables and beans and rice, you’ll always have art to showcase to your friends and family.

Oprah’s not vegan, but she did try the diet for 21 days as part of a cleansing.

Bet she misses the good ol’ days of plentiful poop.

Dr. Phil McGraw Army Meal Prompts Vegetarian Questions

GOLF 2010 - Bob Hope Classic PGA

Dr. Phil gave both some food voyeurism into one of his latest meals as well as some advice about repelling mosquitoes in a recent Tweet.

The food sounds great, but the anti bug biting advice…not so great.

“Jordan chks in: About to dine on a veggie lasagna MRE. Ate two match heads Army guys say sulfur keeps Mosquitos off of u.”

According to Backpacker magazine, the advice about eating match heads should be taken out by a grenade:

“It’s a myth. Matches contain poisonous chemicals in addition to sulfur. Save them for cooking dinner and not your intestines.”

Yikes!

But those vegetarian MREs made especially for the troops sound delish!

What are the options for a vegetarian defending his or her country?

The Epic Center showcases a variety of ready to eat meals the United States military provides to their service members and at a glance, the variety is impressive.

Veggie burgers, vegetable lasagna, vegetarian chili with beans and veggie crumbles over pasta with marinara sauce.

Beans, cheese and faux meat will satisfy some, but where’s the tofu, fruit and soy milk?

And are any of these entrees vegan for our egg and dairy free soldiers?

Still waiting for Dr. Phil to update his Twitter about the taste.
